Overview

The Team Losi Racing 16mm Shock Piston V2, STD 5 x 1.5, 5 x 1.6 (Z-TLR243054) is a precision replacement shock piston designed specifically for the TLR 8IGHT-X/E 2.0 1/8 scale racing buggy. This genuine Team Losi Racing component is an essential upgrade for competitive RC racers in the UK who demand the best performance from their off-road racing machines. As the 8IGHT-X/E 2.0 continues to establish itself as the fastest and easiest to drive 1/8 scale buggy from TLR, this shock piston plays a vital role in maintaining the vehicle's suspension performance under the demanding conditions of race-track competition.

Suspension tuning is absolutely critical in competitive RC car racing, and the shock piston directly controls how your suspension behaves through compression and rebound phases. Whether you're setting up your RC buggy for high-speed racing on clay tracks, preparing for sand courses, or fine-tuning for mixed terrain events, having multiple shock piston options allows you to dial in the exact damping characteristics your driving style and track conditions demand. The V2 version of this piston represents the latest engineering from Team Losi Racing's factory drivers and development team, who have thoroughly tested these components under genuine competition conditions.

Team Losi Racing has engineered this shock piston with precision manufacturing to ensure perfect fitment and consistent performance lap after lap. For dedicated RC racers in the UK seeking ready-to-race components that deliver professional-grade reliability, this replacement shock piston is an indispensable addition to your pit box and workshop. Stock multiple piston sizes so you can make quick suspension adjustments between practice sessions and race heats, keeping your competitive edge sharp.

Key Features

  • Genuine Team Losi Racing Component — This is an official OEM replacement part manufactured by Team Losi specifically for the 8IGHT-X/E 2.0 buggy, meaning it is engineered to fit perfectly and perform exactly as the original designers intended, eliminating any compatibility guesswork.
  • V2 Technology — The V2 designation indicates this is the latest generation of shock piston technology developed by TLR, incorporating improvements and refinements based on extensive track testing with factory drivers and competitive racers around the world.
  • Dual Piston Sizes: 5 x 1.5 and 5 x 1.6 — This package provides two different piston diameter and thickness configurations, allowing you to choose the optimal damping profile for your specific track conditions, vehicle weight distribution, and driving technique without needing to purchase separate products.
  • Precision Engineered Materials — Team Losi Racing manufactures these shock pistons from high-quality materials selected specifically for durability and consistent performance, ensuring they maintain their specifications through countless compression and rebound cycles during intense racing.
  • Direct Replacement for 8X and 8XE 2.0 Models — This piston is designed as a direct replacement part for both the 8IGHT-X nitro and 8IGHT-XE electric versions of the 2.0 generation, making it a versatile component for racers running either powertrain option.
  • Track-Tested by Factory Drivers — Team Losi engineers have tested these shock pistons extensively under genuine competition conditions with their factory racing team, confirming they deliver reliable performance when it matters most at race events.
  • Essential for Suspension Tuning — Having multiple piston options allows experienced racers to fine-tune their suspension response, adjusting the balance between high-speed stability and low-speed compliance to suit different track surfaces and weather conditions.
  • Professional-Grade Racing Component — This is the type of detail-focused component that separates competitive race setups from casual hobby vehicles, giving serious racers the tools they need to extract maximum performance from the 8IGHT-X/E 2.0 platform.

Technical Performance

The shock piston is a critical suspension component that directly influences how your RC buggy handles weight transfer, braking stability, acceleration traction, and cornering grip. The 16mm shock diameter is the specification for the advanced suspension system on the TLR 8IGHT-X/E 2.0, a 1/8 scale nitro and electric racing buggy that has been thoroughly engineered for professional-level performance. The dual piston sizes included in this package — 5 x 1.5mm and 5 x 1.6mm — represent different damping rates that affect how quickly the shock fluid moves through the piston, fundamentally changing the vehicle's suspension behaviour. A piston with smaller diameter holes or thinner thickness restricts fluid flow more severely, creating a stiffer, more responsive suspension character that resists bottoming out during hard impacts and maintains stability at high speeds. Conversely, larger piston dimensions allow more fluid to pass through, creating a softer, more compliant suspension that absorbs bigger bumps more smoothly and provides better traction on rough surfaces. Team Losi Racing has engineered both piston sizes to work within the specifications of the 8IGHT-X/E 2.0's advanced chassis geometry and suspension linkage, ensuring they deliver predictable, repeatable performance. The precision manufacturing processes used by TLR guarantee that these pistons maintain their specifications consistently across multiple units, allowing you to confidently build multiple shock assemblies with identical damping characteristics. For competitive RC car racing in the UK, having access to multiple piston options transforms your tuning flexibility, allowing you to adapt your vehicle's handling to suit different track conditions, ambient temperatures, and driving requirements without major suspension rebuilds.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the 5 x 1.5 and 5 x 1.6 piston sizes included in this package? — The numbers refer to the piston hole diameter and thickness. The 5 x 1.5mm piston creates slightly more resistance to fluid flow compared to the 5 x 1.6mm piston, resulting in slightly stiffer suspension characteristics. For racing on smooth, high-grip tracks, the 1.5mm piston typically provides better stability. For rougher terrain or tracks with larger bumps, the 1.6mm piston allows better suspension compliance. Most racers keep both sizes in their pit box to quickly adjust their setup between practice sessions.
  • Will this shock piston fit my TLR 8IGHT-X/E 2.0 buggy? — Yes, this is a genuine Team Losi Racing component designed specifically as a direct replacement for the 8IGHT-X and 8IGHT-XE 2.0 models. Whether you're running the nitro 8X or the electric 8XE version, this piston will fit perfectly into your existing 16mm shock bodies. The V2 designation confirms it's the current generation compatible with 2.0 version buggy specifications.
  • How often should I replace my shock pistons? — Shock pistons are wear items that degrade over time through thousands of compression and rebound cycles. For casual weekend bashers, they might last an entire season. For competitive racers running multiple heats and practice sessions per week, you might consider checking them after 10-15 hours of driving and replacing them if they show signs of wear or if the damping feel becomes inconsistent. Keeping spare pistons in your workshop ensures you can always maintain optimal suspension performance.
  • Can I use these pistons with different shock fluid weights? — Yes, the piston hole diameter remains constant, but combined with different viscosity shock fluids, you can create various damping profiles. A softer piston (like the 1.6mm) paired with medium-weight fluid might perform similarly to the stiffer piston (1.5mm) with thin fluid. This flexibility allows experienced racers to fine-tune suspension performance to match their track and driving preferences.
  • Are these shock pistons suitable for a beginner RC racer? — Shock piston selection is primarily relevant for competitive racers who are actively tuning their vehicles for specific track conditions. Complete beginners might be better served by starting with the standard pistons that came with their buggy kit. However, if you're developing your racing skills and want to understand suspension tuning, having both piston sizes available is an excellent educational tool and investment in improving your competitive abilities.
  • What makes TLR shock pistons different from generic aftermarket options? — Team Losi Racing manufactures these pistons as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts with the same precision standards used for complete TLR race kits. They've been extensively tested by factory racing drivers under genuine competition conditions, confirming they deliver reliable, consistent performance. Generic parts may have inconsistent manufacturing tolerances or use lower-grade materials, potentially resulting in unpredictable damping characteristics that could harm your competitiveness at race events.
