Overview
The TLR Silicone Shock Oil, 40WT, 516cSt, 2oz is an essential maintenance product for RC enthusiasts who demand precision and reliability from their vehicles. Manufactured by Team Losi Racing, one of the most respected names in professional RC racing, this silicone shock oil is specifically formulated to provide consistent damping performance across a wide range of racing conditions. Whether you're running an RC car UK-wide on the track or fine-tuning your setup at the pit, having the correct shock oil viscosity is crucial to achieving optimal handling, stability, and suspension response. This 40WT formulation at 516cSt sits in the mid-range of TLR's comprehensive shock oil lineup, making it suitable for drivers who need a balance between responsiveness and controlled dampening without excessive stiffness or excessive compliance.
Shock oil is not simply a consumable—it's a critical tuning variable that directly affects how your RC buggy, truggy, or short-course truck performs on different track surfaces. The 2oz bottle provides enough product for multiple applications and refills, ensuring you have backup fluid when you need to adjust your suspension setup or perform routine maintenance. TLR's silicone shock fluids are engineered to maintain consistent viscosity across temperature ranges, which means your suspension will perform predictably whether you're racing in cool British winters or warm summer conditions. For serious racers, casual weekend bashers, and everyone in between, having a well-stocked selection of shock oils in different weights allows you to dial in your vehicle's handling characteristics with precision.
This product is part of Team Losi Racing's comprehensive Oil & Fluids range, which includes everything from differential grease to high-pressure bearing lubricants. TLR's engineering team has designed these products specifically with RC racing demands in mind, ensuring compatibility with modern shock absorber designs and delivering the performance characteristics that competitive drivers expect. If you're building or maintaining an RC car in the UK, investing in quality shock oil from a trusted manufacturer like Team Losi Racing demonstrates your commitment to getting the best performance from your vehicle.
Key Features
- 40WT Viscosity Rating — This mid-range weight provides a balanced compromise between shock responsiveness and damping control, making it suitable for a variety of track conditions and driving styles without requiring extreme setup adjustments.
- 516cSt Kinematic Viscosity — The precise centistoke measurement of 516cSt ensures consistent fluid dynamics within your shock absorber, allowing for predictable suspension behaviour and reliable tuning repeatability across multiple races and practice sessions.
- Team Losi Racing Formulation — Developed by the engineering team at one of the world's leading RC racing manufacturers, this silicone shock oil is optimised for use in modern RC suspension systems used in buggies, trugies, and short-course trucks.
- Silicone-Based Formula — Silicone shock oils offer superior temperature stability compared to mineral oils, maintaining consistent viscosity whether you're racing in hot summer conditions or cooler British weather, which is essential for maintaining predictable suspension performance throughout a race day.
- 2oz Convenient Bottle Size — The 2oz container is the perfect size for pit bag storage, allowing you to carry spare shock oil to the track for mid-event adjustments or maintenance without taking up excessive space in your toolbox.
- Professional Racing Grade — This product is used by competitive racers and is part of TLR's professional-level accessory range, meaning it meets the standards and performance requirements of serious RC racing competitors.
Technical Performance
The TLR Silicone Shock Oil, 40WT, 516cSt is engineered to deliver consistent damping performance across the full range of RC racing applications. The 40WT weight classification indicates moderate viscosity, positioning this oil between lighter fluids like the 27.5WT (294cSt) and 30WT (338cSt) options and heavier formulations like the 45WT (610cSt) and 50WT (710cSt). The measured kinematic viscosity of 516cSt provides the precise fluid dynamics required for modern RC shock absorber designs, ensuring that the suspension responds correctly to track inputs, bump compliance, and rebound characteristics. Silicone-based formulations like this are the industry standard in RC racing because they maintain viscosity stability across temperature variations—a critical factor when your RC vehicle is subjected to the friction heat generated during intensive racing sessions or extended practice runs.
The engineering behind TLR's shock oils reflects decades of competitive racing experience. Team Losi Racing's design philosophy prioritises consistency and tuning precision, which is why this 40WT option sits at a midpoint in their viscosity range. Drivers who choose this weight are typically looking for a setup that doesn't require extreme spring rates or ride height adjustments to achieve desired handling characteristics. The fluid's molecular structure is formulated to resist degradation from heat, moisture, and the mechanical shear forces that occur within working shock absorbers, meaning it maintains its performance characteristics throughout extended use. For UK RC racers who demand reliability and predictability in their equipment, this level of engineering attention to detail is what separates professional-grade maintenance products from generic alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What weight shock oil should I use in my RC car? — Shock oil weight depends on your vehicle type, track conditions, and desired handling characteristics. The 40WT (516cSt) formulation offered here is a moderate-viscosity option that works well as a starting point or baseline setup. If you find your suspension too soft and wallowy, you might move to a heavier weight like 45WT or 50WT. If your suspension feels too stiff and responsive, a lighter oil like 27.5WT or 30WT might be more suitable. Team Losi Racing offers a complete range to support different tuning requirements.
- Can I mix different brands of shock oil? — It's best practice to stick with one manufacturer's silicone shock oil formulation within your vehicle. While TLR's silicone oils are compatible with most modern RC shock absorbers, mixing different brands or formulations can lead to unpredictable viscosity characteristics and tuning inconsistency. Always use TLR silicone shock oil for the best results with TLR vehicles and components.
- How often should I change my shock oil? — Shock oil doesn't have a strict replacement schedule like motor oil in cars, but you should monitor it for contamination from dust, moisture, or particulates. If your oil appears discoloured, cloudy, or contaminated after a race or practice session, it's time to refresh it. Many competitive racers refresh their shock oils regularly as part of routine maintenance, especially before major race events, to ensure peak performance and consistency.
- What is the difference between 40WT and other TLR shock oil weights? — Team Losi Racing manufactures shock oils in several weights: 27.5WT (294cSt), 30WT (338cSt), 35WT (420cSt), 37.5WT (468cSt), 40WT (516cSt), 45WT (610cSt), and 50WT (710cSt). Each represents a progressively higher viscosity. The 40WT at 516cSt sits in the middle of the range, offering a balanced setup for general-purpose racing without extreme adjustments.
- Is silicone shock oil necessary or can I use any oil? — Using proper silicone shock oil formulated for RC vehicles is essential. Silicone oils maintain consistent viscosity across temperature ranges, resist degradation from heat and friction, and are specifically engineered for the precision requirements of RC suspension systems. Using automotive or industrial oils can result in unpredictable handling, poor temperature stability, and potential damage to seals within your shocks.
- Will this shock oil work with my specific RC vehicle? — This TLR silicone shock oil is compatible with RC buggies, trugies, short-course trucks, and other vehicles that use standard shock absorber designs. However, always verify compatibility with your specific vehicle's shock specifications. Team Losi Racing designs these fluids for professional RC racing vehicles, so they're particularly well-suited to TLR models and most modern RC racing platforms.
