Overview
The Team Losi Racing Machined Shock Pistons, Thin 2 x 1.8mm G3 (2) represent precision engineering at its finest for competitive 1/10 scale RC buggy racing. These machined shock pistons are essential components for tuning and maintaining the suspension performance of your TLR 22X-4 ELITE race buggy, one of the most successful competition platforms in 1/10 scale 4WD RC car racing. Whether you're competing at the highest levels or working to dial in your setup for maximum track performance, these replacement pistons deliver the consistency and reliability that championship-winning RC racing demands.
If you're serious about RC car racing in the UK and beyond, you understand that shock performance directly impacts how your buggy handles on dirt and clay tracks. The TLR 22X-4 ELITE won the ROAR Nationals and continues to dominate competitions worldwide, and that success is built on meticulous suspension tuning using genuine Team Losi Racing parts. These machined shock pistons are specifically designed for the G3 generation shock system and allow you to fine-tune your suspension's damping characteristics by selecting the optimal piston configuration for your racing conditions and driving style.
Team Losi Racing shock pistons are manufactured to the same exacting standards that TLR factory team drivers rely on in their competition rigs. The thin profile and precision machining ensure consistent performance lap after lap, reducing variables in your suspension setup and allowing you to focus on driving speed rather than equipment inconsistency. As a serious RC enthusiast or competitive racer looking for ready-to-race performance, these pistons provide the tuning flexibility and reliability that genuine factory parts offer.
Key Features
- Machined construction — Precision machined from quality materials to ensure exact tolerances and consistent performance across multiple shocks, allowing for repeatable suspension tuning session after session.
- 2 x 1.8mm configuration — The specific piston hole diameter and thickness combination is engineered to provide particular damping characteristics, enabling you to match your suspension setup to track conditions and driving preferences.
- Thin profile design — The thin piston design offers a specific flow characteristic through the shock oil, affecting how responsive the suspension feels and how the buggy handles bumps and transitions on the track.
- G3 shock compatibility — These pistons are specifically designed for Team Losi Racing G3 generation shocks, ensuring perfect fit and function with your TLR 22X-4 ELITE or other vehicles using this shock standard.
- Pair included — The pack contains two pistons, allowing you to upgrade both front or both rear shocks, or to keep spare pistons on hand for quick setup changes during practice and racing events.
- Factory team tested — These parts are the same specification used by TLR factory team drivers in world-class competition, validating their performance and reliability under the most demanding racing conditions.
- Easy installation — Shock piston replacement is a straightforward maintenance procedure using basic tools, making these parts accessible for tuning adjustments between races or practice sessions.
Technical Performance
The Team Losi Racing Machined Shock Pistons represent critical tuning components in the suspension system of 1/10 scale 4WD RC buggies. The 2 x 1.8mm specification refers to the precise dimensions of the piston holes that allow shock oil to flow through the piston assembly during suspension compression and extension. This specific configuration works in concert with your choice of shock oil viscosity to control how quickly the suspension responds to track inputs. Thinner pistons with smaller hole diameters create more resistance to oil flow, resulting in a stiffer, more responsive suspension feel, whilst larger hole diameters allow oil to flow more freely, creating a softer, more compliant suspension. The thin profile of these pistons is engineered to provide a balanced damping curve that suits competitive racing on varied track surfaces. Because the TLR 22X-4 ELITE is designed for performance on both dirt and clay tracks, having multiple piston options allows you to dial in your suspension for specific track conditions. The machining quality ensures that piston-to-shock-body tolerances remain tight and consistent, preventing oil bypass and maintaining predictable suspension behaviour throughout extended practice and race sessions. When combined with matching shock shafts, bodies, springs, and quality shock oil, these pistons become part of a complete suspension tuning system that separates competitive RC racing performance from casual driving. The fact that these parts are used by TLR factory teams in ROAR National-level competition provides assurance that the engineering and manufacturing standards meet the demands of the highest levels of 1/10 scale RC buggy racing.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What do shock pistons do in an RC buggy suspension system? — Shock pistons control how quickly shock oil flows through the piston assembly during suspension compression and extension. By selecting pistons with different hole sizes and configurations, you adjust the damping stiffness of your shocks, which directly affects how your RC car handles bumps, corners, and track transitions. This is a fundamental tuning adjustment in competitive RC racing.
- How do I know which piston size to use for my track? — Piston selection depends on track surface (whether you're racing on dirt, clay, or carpet), track grip level, weather conditions, and your driving style. Softer tracks with low grip typically require stiffer (smaller hole) pistons to prevent the suspension from compressing too much, whilst high-grip tracks may benefit from softer (larger hole) pistons for better traction. Your RC racing community and local track operators can provide guidance on common setups.
- Are these pistons compatible with all TLR shocks? — No, these pistons are specifically designed for Team Losi Racing G3 generation shocks. They will not fit shocks from other generations or manufacturers. The TLR 22X-4 ELITE uses G3 shocks, so these pistons are the correct replacement for that vehicle. Always verify your shock generation before ordering replacement parts.
- What is the difference between the Thin 2 x 1.8mm and other piston options? — Team Losi Racing offers several piston configurations including Thin 2 x 1.6mm, Thin 2 x 1.7mm, Thin 2 x 1.5mm, and non-thin versions with different outer diameters and hole configurations. Each configuration provides different damping characteristics. The 2 x 1.8mm represents a specific middle ground in stiffness, whilst 1.6mm or 1.5mm would be stiffer and 2.3mm outer diameter versions would offer different performance envelopes. Your choice depends on your specific track and setup preferences.
- How often should I replace shock pistons? — Shock pistons don't typically wear out or break with normal use. You keep the same pistons but change them between races if you want to try different tuning configurations. You would only need replacement pistons if they become damaged, scored, or bent, which can happen if your shock experiences impact damage or if debris enters the shock body.
- Do I need shock oil to use these pistons? — Yes, shock pistons work by controlling the flow of shock oil. Your shocks must be filled with the appropriate weight of shock oil (commonly available in various viscosities from light to heavy) for the pistons to function correctly. The combination of piston size and shock oil weight determines your overall suspension damping.
- Can I use these pistons on a 22X-4 ELITE race buggy? — Yes, these pistons are designed for the TLR 22X-4 ELITE, which features G3 generation shocks. The 22X-4 ELITE is a championship-winning 1/10 scale 4WD buggy that won the ROAR Nationals, and these genuine Team Losi Racing parts are optimized for this platform.
- Is this a beginner-friendly upgrade? — Shock piston tuning is an intermediate to advanced technique. Beginners with a new 22X-4 ELITE should run the stock piston configuration initially to learn the platform before making changes. However, once you're comfortable with your buggy's handling, piston selection becomes one of the most impactful tuning adjustments you can make, and it's well worth learning about.
