Overview

The Team Losi Racing Machined Shock Pistons, 1.6-1.7 Split, G3 (2) are precision-engineered replacement components designed for the TLR 22 5.0 DC Race Roller 1/10 scale RC buggy. These machined pistons represent genuine factory race team specification parts, identical to those used by Team Losi Racing's competitive drivers at the highest levels of RC racing worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned RC racer in the UK competing on dirt and clay tracks, or a dedicated hobbyist looking to maintain and upgrade your buggy, these shock pistons are essential consumables that ensure your suspension performs at peak efficiency during every race session.

Built to the same exacting standards as the original equipment fitted to your TLR 22 5.0 DC, these G3 generation shock pistons are manufactured using premium materials and precision machining techniques that guarantee perfect fit and reliable performance. The 1.6-1.7mm split configuration offers versatile tuning options, allowing you to dial in the exact suspension response your racing style demands. As an authorised retailer of Team Losi Racing products, RC Model Shop stocks genuine TLR components that are recognised and trusted by competitive RC racers across the UK and beyond.

Maintaining your RC buggy with factory-specification replacement parts is crucial for consistent performance. The TLR 22 5.0 DC Race Roller endures significant punishment during racing—from high-speed cornering to landing jumps and recovering from crashes. The suspension system absorbs tremendous forces, and shock pistons gradually wear through normal use. These machined pistons from Team Losi Racing ensure your G3 shock absorbers continue delivering the plush, responsive handling that has made the TLR 22 5.0 DC recognised as one of the best-driving 2WD competition buggies ever produced.

Key Features

  • Precision Machined Construction — Each piston is manufactured to exact tolerances using premium materials, ensuring perfect fit within your G3 shock bodies and consistent performance lap after lap. The precision machining process eliminates variation that could affect your suspension tuning.
  • 1.6-1.7mm Split Configuration — This kit includes pistons in both 1.6mm and 1.7mm sizes, giving you the flexibility to tune your suspension response precisely to match your driving style, track conditions, and racing setup preferences without requiring multiple part purchases.
  • G3 Generation Compatibility — These pistons are specifically designed for the G3 generation 12mm Big Bore shocks fitted to the TLR 22 5.0 DC Race Roller, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance with your existing suspension system.
  • Genuine TLR Factory Specification — These components are assembled to the exact specifications used by Team Losi Racing's factory race team, meaning you're using the same parts that have won RC races around the world at the highest competitive levels.
  • Two Pistons per Package — Each package contains two pistons, allowing you to replace both front or both rear shock pistons, or maintain spare sets for frequent racing where suspension wear accumulates quickly.
  • Wear Resistant Performance — Machined shock pistons gradually wear through normal racing use as they absorb the shock loads from cornering, jumping, and track impacts. Regular replacement maintains your suspension's responsiveness and handling characteristics.

Technical Performance

The TLR Machined Shock Pistons represent the culmination of Team Losi Racing's extensive research and development in 1/10 scale 2WD buggy suspension design. The G3 12mm Big Bore shock system on the TLR 22 5.0 DC Race Roller provides plush handling for superior cornering performance on both tight and flowing track layouts. The shock pistons are the critical internal component that controls how shock oil flows within the damper bodies, directly affecting suspension stiffness, response speed, and overall handling feel. The 1.6-1.7mm split size options allow you to adjust damping without changing shock fluid viscosity, providing a straightforward tuning path that experienced RC racers utilise to optimise setup for specific track conditions. The machining process ensures these pistons maintain dimensional accuracy throughout their service life, preserving the precision engineering that makes the TLR 22 5.0 DC's suspension geometry so effective. The updated steering geometry of the TLR 22 5.0 DC creates noticeably smoother high-speed and off-centre steering, with improved low-speed steering for tighter tracks and turns—characteristics that depend partially on maintaining healthy shock components. The 2.0mm milled aluminium chassis offers the right amount of flex and rigidity for smooth cornering and to maintain balance and prevent bouncing after jumps, working in harmony with properly functioning shock pistons. When these pistons wear, they lose their sharp edges and sealing characteristics, resulting in reduced damping consistency and unpredictable handling. Replacing them with genuine TLR components restores your buggy to factory performance standards.

What's in the Box

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are these shock pistons compatible with my TLR 22 5.0 RC buggy? — These pistons are specifically engineered for the TLR 22 5.0 DC Race Roller and its G3 generation 12mm Big Bore shock system. They are not compatible with other shock types or generations. Verify that your buggy uses G3 shocks before purchasing, as earlier and later generations use different internal dimensions.
  • How often should I replace shock pistons on my RC racing buggy? — The frequency of piston replacement depends on how frequently you race and the intensity of your track sessions. Competitive racers who race multiple times weekly may replace pistons every few months, while casual racers might replace them annually. Signs of wear include reduced suspension response, inconsistent handling between left and right sides, and visible pitting or wear on the piston surfaces during disassembly.
  • What is the difference between the 1.6mm and 1.7mm pistons included in this kit? — The different piston sizes create different suspension stiffness levels by restricting shock oil flow differently. The 1.6mm pistons are slightly smaller and create less restriction, resulting in softer, more compliant suspension. The 1.7mm pistons are slightly larger and restrict flow more, creating stiffer damping. You can mix and match these sizes across your four shocks to fine-tune your suspension balance—for example, using 1.6mm in front and 1.7mm in rear, or any other combination that suits your track and driving style.
  • Can I use these pistons without special tools? — Replacing shock pistons requires disassembling your shock bodies, which does require some basic RC maintenance tools. You'll need an adjustable wrench or the appropriate socket for your shock caps, and careful handling to avoid damaging the shock seals and o-rings when disassembling. Many RC racers perform this maintenance themselves as part of their regular track-side setup routine.
  • Why should I buy genuine TLR pistons instead of cheaper alternatives? — Genuine TLR parts are manufactured to the exact specifications used by Team Losi Racing's factory race team, with precision machining that ensures consistent damping performance and perfect fit within your G3 shock bodies. Inferior pistons may have dimensional variations that affect damping consistency, rough machining that damages internal seals, or materials that wear faster. As suspension tuning is critical to competitive performance, using genuine components ensures your suspension behaves predictably and maintains its characteristics throughout the race.
  • What is included with these shock pistons? — This package contains only the pistons themselves (two 1.6mm and two 1.7mm). You will need to use your existing shock bodies, springs, shock shafts, seals and o-rings. If your shock system requires additional maintenance, items such as Shock O-ring Grease, replacement X-ring seal sets, and shock seal bushings are available separately.
