Overview
The Losi Pinion Gear 20T 1.0M 5mm Shaft is an essential replacement and upgrade component for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand precision engineering and reliable performance. Whether you're a seasoned competitor running your RC buggy or truck at the track, a weekend basher pushing your machine to the limit, or an RC hobbyist looking to fine-tune your vehicle's gearing, this pinion gear delivers the quality and consistency you need. Manufactured by Losi, a brand recognised for producing high-quality drivetrain components, this pinion gear is engineered to exacting standards to ensure smooth power delivery, reduced wear on your motor and main gears, and improved overall responsiveness of your RC car.
Pinion gears are fundamental to the drivetrain of any electric-powered RC vehicle. They sit on the motor shaft and mesh with your vehicle's spur gear to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. The gear ratio you choose—determined by the number of teeth on your pinion gear—directly affects your RC car's acceleration, top speed, and overall performance characteristics. A 20-tooth pinion gear represents a popular mid-range option that balances acceleration with top speed, making it suitable for a wide variety of driving conditions and vehicle types used throughout the UK RC community.
This Losi pinion gear features a 1.0 modulus specification, which indicates the tooth pitch and ensures compatibility with spur gears of the same modulus rating. The 5mm shaft diameter is a standard fitment for many Losi RC vehicles and compatible models, making this an ideal replacement part or upgrade option for your collection. By choosing genuine Losi components like this pinion gear, you ensure that your RC car maintains its performance integrity and longevity, avoiding the pitfalls of inferior aftermarket parts that may cause excessive backlash, premature wear, or unreliable operation during critical racing moments or casual bashing sessions.
Key Features
- 20-Tooth Configuration — The 20-tooth count provides an ideal balance between acceleration and top speed, making this pinion gear versatile across different track conditions and driving styles that UK RC enthusiasts encounter, whether on smooth tarmac, grass, or mixed terrain.
- 1.0 Modulus Specification — The 1.0M specification ensures precise tooth pitch compatibility with matching spur gears, delivering smooth meshing engagement that minimises noise, reduces vibration, and extends the service life of both the pinion and spur gears in your drivetrain.
- 5mm Shaft Diameter — The 5mm shaft is a standard fitment for numerous Losi RC vehicles and compatible models, ensuring straightforward installation without requiring adapters or modifications to your existing motor and drivetrain setup.
- Genuine Losi Manufacturing — As an authentic Losi component, this pinion gear is manufactured to precise tolerances using quality materials, guaranteeing reliability and consistent performance that you can trust lap after lap or bashing session after bashing session.
- Direct Replacement Part — This pinion gear serves as a direct replacement for worn or damaged originals, or as an upgrade option when you want to adjust your vehicle's gearing for different performance characteristics without requiring complete drivetrain overhauls.
Technical Performance
The Losi Pinion Gear 20T 1.0M 5mm Shaft is engineered with precision manufacturing techniques that ensure consistent tooth profile, accurate pitch diameter, and reliable engagement with your spur gear. The 1.0 modulus specification is a critical indicator of gear tooth size and spacing—matching this specification with your spur gear is essential for optimal performance. The 5mm shaft diameter is machined to exact tolerances to fit snugly onto your motor shaft, preventing slippage during acceleration and maintaining consistent power delivery throughout your driving session. The 20-tooth configuration strikes an effective balance in the gearing equation: fewer teeth would increase top speed but sacrifice acceleration and low-end torque response, whilst more teeth would enhance acceleration at the expense of maximum speed. This mid-range tooth count makes the 20T pinion suitable for a broad spectrum of RC vehicles including buggies, trucks, and other electric-powered RC cars popular in the UK market. Whether you're running a high-speed 4WD buggy on a track, a stadium truck across varied terrain, or a general-purpose RC car for recreational bashing, this pinion gear adapts well to multiple driving scenarios. The quality of Losi manufacturing means you'll experience smooth, quiet engagement with minimal backlash, which translates to more responsive steering input and better overall handling characteristics in your RC vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need to replace it on my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted on your motor shaft that meshes with the spur gear to transmit power from your electric motor to your wheels. Over time, pinion gears can wear out, strip teeth, or become damaged through heavy use or crashes, requiring replacement. Additionally, many RC enthusiasts swap pinion gears to adjust their vehicle's gearing ratio and change performance characteristics, trading acceleration for top speed or vice versa based on track conditions and driving preferences.
- How do I know if this 20T pinion gear is compatible with my RC car? — This pinion gear is designed for Losi RC vehicles and compatible models that use a 5mm motor shaft and 1.0 modulus gearing. Check your vehicle's manual or current pinion gear to confirm both the shaft diameter and modulus specification match before purchasing. If you're uncertain, our team at RC Model Shop can help you verify compatibility.
- What is the difference between a 20T and other tooth counts like 18T or 22T? — Tooth count directly affects your vehicle's gearing ratio and performance. An 18-tooth pinion (fewer teeth) will increase your top speed but reduce acceleration and low-end response. A 22-tooth pinion (more teeth) will improve acceleration and torque but reduce maximum speed. The 20T represents a balanced middle ground suitable for varied driving conditions and general-purpose use.
- Will this pinion gear fit my current motor and spur gear? — Compatibility depends on two factors: your motor shaft must be 5mm in diameter, and your spur gear must be 1.0 modulus specification. Mixing different modulus gears can cause poor meshing, increased wear, and unreliable performance. Always verify these specifications before installing a new pinion gear.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Pinion gear replacement frequency depends on how heavily you use your RC car, the driving surface conditions, and your maintenance routine. Some users replace their pinion gear every few months of regular use, whilst others may go longer with careful maintenance and proper lubrication. Inspect your pinion gear regularly for signs of wear, stripped teeth, or cracks, and replace it when necessary to maintain optimal vehicle performance.
