Overview

The Traxxas 22-T Pinion Gear (48-pitch) Set TRX2422 is an essential performance tuning component for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand precision engineering and reliable operation. Whether you're running a competitive RC car, enjoying weekend bashing sessions, or fine-tuning your ready to run RC vehicle, pinion gears play a critical role in controlling your model's acceleration, top speed and overall performance characteristics. Traxxas, a globally recognised leader in RC hobby technology, offers a comprehensive selection of 48-pitch pinion gears specifically designed to give you complete control over your RC car's drivetrain configuration and speed characteristics.

This 22-tooth pinion gear represents a popular choice for racers and hobbyists seeking a balanced setup that delivers responsive acceleration without sacrificing top-end performance. The 48-pitch specification means this gear is engineered to work seamlessly with compatible Traxxas transmission systems, ensuring smooth power delivery, reduced wear on drivetrain components and extended service life. For those new to RC car UK ownership, pinion gears are the small but vital components that mesh with your spur gear to transfer power from your brushless or brushed motor to the wheels. Changing pinion tooth count is one of the most effective ways to customise your RC car's performance profile, making this a must-have tuning part for any serious hobbyist.

The TRX2422 is manufactured to Traxxas's exacting quality standards, ensuring that every tooth is precisely cut and every dimension is accurate for perfect mesh alignment with your existing drivetrain. If you're looking to optimise your RC vehicle's performance, experiment with different gearing ratios, or simply replace a worn pinion gear, this Traxxas 48-pitch set delivers the quality and precision you'd expect from an authorised RC retailer stocking genuine Traxxas components.

Key Features

  • 48-Pitch Specification — The 48-pitch (48dp) gear pitch is the industry standard for many modern RC cars and directly determines compatibility with your transmission system, ensuring you purchase the correct component that will mesh perfectly with your spur gear without binding, slipping or premature wear.
  • 22-Tooth Configuration — With 21 to 22 teeth, this pinion provides a versatile gearing option that balances acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for a wide range of racing conditions, bash courses and competitive environments across UK RC clubs and tracks.
  • 3.2mm Bore Diameter — The precisely machined 3.2mm bore ensures a secure, wobble-free fit on your motor shaft, providing consistent power transmission and eliminating the vibrational losses that would result from a loose or oversized bore.
  • Traxxas Quality Engineering — Manufactured by Traxxas, a globally respected name in RC technology, this pinion gear benefits from decades of motorsport expertise, precision manufacturing and rigorous quality control that ensures every tooth is perfectly formed for smooth engagement and minimal noise.
  • Performance Tuning Component — As part of Traxxas's comprehensive range of 48-pitch pinion gears, the TRX2422 enables you to fine-tune your RC car's performance characteristics by adjusting your overall gear ratio, allowing you to optimise acceleration for tight technical courses or increase top speed for high-speed tracks.
  • Extended Drivetrain Life — Using the correct pinion gear specification reduces excessive wear on both the pinion and spur gear, protecting your entire drivetrain system and reducing the frequency of costly replacements, ultimately saving money over the lifetime of your RC hobby.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 22-T Pinion Gear TRX2422 represents precision engineering at the component level. Manufactured to exact specifications with perfectly cut teeth, this 48-pitch gear is engineered to deliver smooth, reliable power transmission from your motor to your RC car's drivetrain. The 3.2mm bore diameter is precision-machined to exacting tolerances, ensuring a secure fit that eliminates backlash and wobble whilst maintaining perfect alignment with your motor shaft. The 22-tooth count positions this gear in the mid-range of Traxxas's pinion offerings, providing an excellent balance between acceleration response and terminal velocity. For RC cars running standard brushless systems or brushed motors, this pinion gear works in concert with your spur gear to create an overall gear ratio that directly influences your vehicle's performance envelope. The tooth profile is engineered for smooth meshing, reducing the gear noise and drivetrain vibration that can compromise handling precision and reduce component lifespan. Whether you're running a competitive racing setup, a weekend basher on rough terrain, or a precision track day vehicle, selecting the correct pinion tooth count is fundamental to achieving your desired performance characteristics. The TRX2422 is suitable for drivers seeking a versatile gearing solution that delivers responsive acceleration with respectable top-end speed, making it an ideal choice for diverse racing conditions and driving styles across UK RC clubs, racetracks and bash venues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need one for my RC car? — A pinion gear is the small, motorised gear that meshes with your RC car's larger spur gear to transfer engine power to the wheels. The pinion's tooth count directly determines your vehicle's acceleration and top speed; fewer teeth mean faster acceleration but lower top speed, whilst more teeth increase top speed but reduce initial acceleration response. Changing your pinion gear is the most straightforward way to tune your RC car's performance without upgrading expensive components like motors or ESCs.
  • What does 48-pitch mean and how do I know if this is compatible with my RC car? — The pitch specification (48dp in this case) defines the tooth size and spacing; 48-pitch gears are only compatible with other 48-pitch gears in the same transmission system. Before purchasing, verify your RC car's specifications or consult your manual to confirm it uses a 48-pitch system, otherwise the teeth will not mesh correctly with your spur gear.
  • Is the 22-tooth pinion right for my driving style? — The 22-tooth configuration offers a balanced middle-ground approach: it provides good acceleration for technical courses with tight corners while maintaining respectable top-end speed for open tracks. If you find your current setup too slow off the line, you might try a lower tooth count; if you need more top speed, consider a higher tooth count. Many racers keep multiple pinion gears on hand to experiment with different setups.
  • How do I install this pinion gear on my motor? — The 3.2mm bore slides directly onto your motor shaft; you'll typically secure it using a set screw or collet. Ensure the bore is clean and free from debris, align the pinion with your spur gear to check for proper mesh (there should be slight backlash but no binding), then tighten the set screw firmly to prevent slipping during hard acceleration.
  • Will changing my pinion gear affect my battery and ESC requirements? — Changing pinion tooth count does not alter your power system requirements; your battery voltage (2S, 3S, 4S LiPo or equivalent), battery capacity (mAh), and ESC current rating remain the same. However, lower tooth count (faster) setups may draw slightly more current, so if you're running at the edge of your ESC's capacity, a lower tooth count pinion could potentially increase stress on your electronics.
  • Can I use this Traxxas pinion gear on a non-Traxxas RC car? — Only if your non-Traxxas vehicle uses a compatible 48-pitch transmission system. Many RC manufacturers including ARRMA and Losi produce 48-pitch compatible vehicles, but you must verify your specific model's specifications before purchase to avoid incompatibility issues.
