Overview
The Tamiya PS-47 Iridescent Pink Gold Polycarbonate Spray Paint (TAM86047) is a specialist finishing product designed exclusively for RC car enthusiasts in the UK and beyond who want to create stunning, eye-catching polycarbonate body shells. This premium spray paint is engineered to deliver a remarkable colour-shifting effect that transitions between vibrant pink and gold depending on the angle from which you view it, creating a truly unique and professional-looking finish that will make your RC model stand out on the track or at the hobby shop. Whether you're building a high-performance RC buggy, a nimble 1/10 scale racer, or any other RC car model with a transparent polycarbonate body, this paint provides the perfect solution for decorating and protecting your investment whilst achieving results that look like professional factory work.
Developed specifically by Tamiya for use on transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling, this paint is the result of years of expertise in the hobby sector. The can contains 100ml of paint, which is the appropriate amount for finishing a complete model body, making it economical and convenient for hobbyists of all skill levels. The iridescent effect creates a sophisticated, multi-dimensional appearance that cannot be achieved with standard metallic or solid colour paints, giving your RC car that premium, bespoke look that catches the eye and impresses fellow RC enthusiasts.
This product is perfect for anyone serious about RC customisation, whether you're a seasoned competitor looking to personalise your competition car, a weekend basher wanting to add visual flair to your daily runner, or an RC hobbyist discovering the world of custom body finishing for the first time. The specialist formulation ensures compatibility with polycarbonate materials whilst remaining completely safe to use on glow engine R/C car bodies, as the paint is impervious to oil and fuels commonly found in nitro-powered models.
Key Features
- Iridescent Pink to Gold Colour Shift — This paint delivers a remarkable optical effect that changes between pink and gold depending upon the angle it is viewed from, creating a dynamic and eye-catching finish that looks different from every perspective and adds genuine visual interest to your RC car body that standard paints simply cannot match.
- Specially Formulated for Polycarbonate — Unlike general-purpose spray paints, this product was developed specifically for transparent polycarbonate bodies, ensuring perfect adhesion, durability and colour accuracy on the exact materials used in modern RC car modelling without risk of damage or poor finish quality.
- Fuel and Oil Resistant — The paint is impervious to oil and fuels, making it completely safe to use on glow engine R/C car bodies and gas-powered RC vehicles where conventional paints would deteriorate or discolour over time, providing long-lasting protection and appearance.
- Optimal Can Size — Each can contains exactly 100ml of paint, which is the appropriate amount for finishing a complete RC model body, eliminating waste and ensuring you have precisely the right quantity needed for professional results without excess product.
- Professional Application System — The spray format allows for even, consistent coverage when applied from the inside of the polycarbonate body at approximately 30cm distance, enabling hobbyists to achieve factory-quality finishes without the need for expensive equipment or specialist skills.
- Layering Capability — The paint is designed to be applied in multiple coats, with instructions to apply an initial even coat, allow it to cure, then spray a backing coat (using PS-5 Black spray paint) to achieve the full iridescent effect, demonstrating Tamiya's deep understanding of how to achieve optimal colour shifting results.
- Requires Black Backing Coat — The iridescent effect requires application of a black backing coat (PS-5 Black spray paint recommended) to work properly, which Tamiya engineers have optimised to create the striking colour-shift effect by reflecting and refracting light through the iridescent layer in a controlled manner.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya PS-47 Iridescent Pink Gold spray paint represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate body finishing technology, incorporating specialist pigments and resins formulated to adhere perfectly to transparent polycarbonate whilst maintaining optical clarity and achieving the remarkable colour-shifting effect. The paint's formulation is engineered to be completely impervious to oil and fuels, making it suitable for use on both electric RC cars and demanding nitro-powered applications where conventional paints would fail. The 100ml volume has been precisely calculated by Tamiya to provide complete coverage for a standard RC car body, allowing for multiple coats as necessary for optimal colour depth and effect. Application from the inside of the polycarbonate body, maintaining approximately 30cm distance from the surface, ensures even spray patterns and professional results. The paint requires adequate curing time between coats and absolutely must be backed with a black coating (PS-5 Black spray paint) to activate and display the iridescent colour-shifting properties, with the pink and gold effect becoming visible only when the backing coat is in place. This technical approach allows light to interact with the iridescent pigments in a controlled manner, creating the angle-dependent colour shift that defines the product's distinctive appearance and makes it instantly recognisable among RC enthusiasts throughout the UK and internationally.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to use a black backing coat with the PS-47 iridescent pink gold paint? — Yes, absolutely. The iridescent effect will not work without applying a black backing coat, preferably Tamiya PS-5 Black spray paint. The black backing layer is essential for the pink and gold colour-shift effect to become visible and perform as designed. Without it, the paint will appear dull and the optical properties will not manifest correctly.
- Can I use this paint on plastic model kits instead of polycarbonate RC car bodies? — No, this paint is only suitable for use on polycarbonate. Do not use on plastic model kits, as the formulation is specifically engineered for polycarbonate compatibility and may damage, dissolve or adhere poorly to standard plastic model materials. Always use on polycarbonate bodies only.
- Is this paint suitable for both electric and nitro-powered RC cars? — Yes, the PS-47 is suitable for both electric RC cars and glow engine nitro-powered models. The paint is impervious to oil and fuels, making it completely safe to use on gas-powered RC bodies where conventional paints would deteriorate. This makes it an excellent choice for any RC car enthusiast regardless of power type.
- How do I apply the PS-47 iridescent pink gold paint for best results? — Paint the polycarbonate body from the inside, keeping the spray can approximately 30cm from the surface. Apply an even first coat and allow it to cure completely. After curing, apply a second coat as necessary for optimal colour depth. Once the pink/gold coat is fully cured, apply a backing coat of PS-5 Black spray paint from the inside. Small details should be brush-painted beforehand using Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate before spray application.
- What size is one can of PS-47 paint and is it enough for a complete RC body? — Each can contains 100ml of paint, which is the appropriate amount for finishing a complete RC model body. This volume has been precisely calculated by Tamiya to provide sufficient paint for proper coverage, allowing for multiple coats as necessary whilst avoiding excess waste.
- Why does the colour appear to shift between pink and gold? — The iridescent pigments in the PS-47 formulation reflect and refract light in a way that creates different colours depending on the viewing angle. When viewed from one angle you see pink, whilst from another angle you see gold. This effect requires the black backing coat to work properly, as the black layer provides the necessary optical contrast and light reflection characteristics needed for the colour-shift phenomenon to occur.
- Can I use this paint on my RC buggy, RC monster truck, or other RC car models? — Yes, the PS-47 works on any RC car model that features a transparent polycarbonate body shell, including RC buggies, RC monster trucks, RC stadium trucks, RC short course trucks, RC crawlers and any other vehicle type that uses polycarbonate bodies. The paint is universally compatible with all polycarbonate RC car bodies.
