Overview
The Tamiya PS-44 Translucent Green Polycarbonate Spray Paint is a specialist finishing product designed specifically for RC car enthusiasts in the UK and beyond who want to achieve professional results on transparent polycarbonate bodies. This 100ml spray can delivers a beautiful translucent green finish that allows light to pass through whilst creating stunning visual depth and colour on your RC car bodywork. Whether you're building a new RC car UK setup or refreshing an existing model, this paint is engineered to work exclusively with polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling, making it an essential tool for anyone serious about achieving showroom-quality results.
What makes the Tamiya PS-44 stand out from standard model paints is its specific formulation for transparent plastic applications. The paint is impervious to oil and fuels, meaning it can be safely used on glow engine RC car bodies without degradation or discolouration over time. This durability makes it ideal for competitive modellers, weekend bashers, and RC enthusiasts who want their investment to look professional season after season. The translucent green shade offers versatility—use it alone for a solid green look, or layer it with Tamiya PS-41 to create a stunning mica effect that catches light beautifully in action.
Each can contains precisely 100ml of paint, which is the manufacturer-recommended amount for finishing a complete RC model body. This careful measurement ensures you have enough product to complete your project without waste, making it economical and practical for the serious RC hobbyist building or customising ready to run RC cars or race kits.

- Translucent Green Finish — The translucent formulation allows light to pass through the polycarbonate body whilst delivering a vibrant green colour, creating depth and visual appeal on your finished RC model.
- Specially Formulated for Polycarbonate — This paint was specifically developed for decorating transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling, ensuring perfect adhesion and performance on the correct substrate.

Technical Performance
The Tamiya PS-44 represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate body painting technology, engineered with precision formulation that distinguishes it from general-purpose hobby paints. The 100ml capacity has been carefully calculated by Tamiya engineers as the optimal amount for completing a full RC car body in polycarbonate, eliminating guesswork and waste whilst ensuring consistent coverage. The paint's formulation is fundamentally different from standard acrylics or enamel paints used on plastic models—it is specifically engineered to adhere to polycarbonate's unique surface whilst remaining impervious to the challenging chemical environment inside a glow engine RC car. This means that whether you're running a fuel-powered RC car for competitive racing or recreational basking, the finish will remain vibrant and protected. The translucent quality ensures that when light passes through the polycarbonate body, the green pigmentation creates a rich, jewel-like appearance that standard opaque paints cannot achieve. The paint's durability against oil and fuel exposure is critical for glow engine users, as standard model paints would degrade, yellow, or crack when exposed to fuel splash and engine oils, compromising both aesthetics and protection. The spray application method from inside the body ensures even coverage without drips, runs, or surface imperfections, whilst the recommendation for 30cm distance and multiple coats allows builders to achieve professional workshop-quality finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use Tamiya PS-44 on plastic scale model kits or other plastic models? — No, this paint must never be used on plastic models. It is formulated exclusively for transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling. Using it on standard plastic model kit components will damage the plastic and produce poor results. Always check the manufacturer's instructions and use only on polycarbonate.
- What is the difference between translucent and opaque paint for RC car bodies? — Translucent paint allows light to pass through the polycarbonate body, creating depth and a jewel-like appearance as light interacts with the colour and the body structure beneath. Opaque paints block light entirely and create a flat, solid colour appearance. For polycarbonate bodies, translucent finishes are generally preferred as they take advantage of the material's transparency and create more visually impressive results.
- Can I use this paint on fuel-powered glow engine RC cars? — Yes, this is one of the key advantages of Tamiya PS-44. The formulation is impervious to oil and fuels, making it safe and durable for use on glow engine RC car bodies. The paint will not degrade, yellow, or crack when exposed to fuel splash and engine oils, providing long-lasting protection and colour retention even in demanding racing conditions.
- How many coats of PS-44 do I need to apply? — The manufacturer recommends applying multiple coats, allowing curing time between applications. Start by painting the body from the inside, keeping the spray can approximately 30cm from the surface. After the first coat cures, apply a second coat. The exact number of coats depends on your desired colour depth and coverage—additional coats will intensify the translucent green colour.
- Can I mix PS-44 with other Tamiya paints to create different shades? — These are spray paints specifically formulated for polycarbonate application. For best results, use them as supplied by Tamiya. Small details should be brush-painted beforehand using Tamiya bottle paints for polycarbonate, which are designed to work in conjunction with the spray finish.
- What does layering with PS-41 do? — Tamiya PS-41 is a mica paint designed to create special effect finishes. By layering PS-44 translucent green with PS-41, you can create a sophisticated mica effect that catches and reflects light in multiple directions, adding professional visual depth and metallic-like appearance to your finished RC car body. This technique is popular in competition RC car finishing.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, this paint is suitable for builders of all experience levels. However, it requires careful technique—spray from inside the body at approximately 30cm distance in a well-ventilated area. First-time users should practice on spare polycarbonate pieces if available, and follow all safety guidelines including wearing protective gloves and eye protection.
- How do I prevent overspray and runs when using PS-44? — The key is applying light, even coats from inside the body whilst maintaining approximately 30cm distance from the surface. This inside-body application method naturally prevents overspray from reaching external surfaces. Allow each coat to cure fully before applying the next coat. Avoid holding the can too close or applying too much paint in one pass, which can cause runs and drips.
