Overview

The Tamiya TS-96 Fluorescent Orange Acrylic Spray Paint is a professional-grade synthetic lacquer spray designed specifically for modellers who demand vibrant, eye-catching finishes on their RC cars and scale models. This 100ml can delivers exceptional colour saturation and rapid curing times, making it the go-to choice for hobbyists building everything from vintage race cars to modern RC vehicles across the UK. Whether you're working on a 1/24 scale RC car body or tackling larger projects, this fluorescent orange spray paint offers the coverage and quality you'd expect from Tamiya, one of the world's most trusted names in model painting supplies.

The distinctive fluorescent orange shade is particularly popular for classic motorcycle colour schemes, rally cars, and modern race liveries—especially fans of the iconic Repsol Escort Cosworth will instantly recognise this bold, energetic hue. Unlike conventional matt or standard orange finishes, this fluorescent version truly pops under normal lighting and photographs beautifully, making your RC models stand out whether displayed on a shelf or out on the track. RC hobbyists across the UK have embraced Tamiya spray paints for their reliability, consistency and ability to work seamlessly alongside other paint types in multi-layer finishing techniques.

What sets Tamiya TS spray paint apart is its unique synthetic lacquer formulation, which cures remarkably quickly compared to traditional acrylics whilst maintaining compatibility with enamel and acrylic detail paints. This means you can apply your base coat and move straight to hand-painting fine details without waiting days for the paint to harden—a significant advantage when you're eager to get your model finished and ready for display or competition.

Key Features

  • Synthetic Lacquer Formulation — This is not standard acrylic paint; Tamiya's synthetic lacquer cures in a short period of time, allowing you to progress quickly through your painting workflow and get your RC model ready faster than with conventional paints.
  • Vibrant Fluorescent Orange Colour — This is a true fluorescent shade that increases in intensity and depth with each additional coat, delivering that iconic high-visibility orange used on professional race vehicles and the famous Repsol Escort Cosworth, ensuring your RC car stands out from the crowd.
  • 100ml Capacity — Each aerosol can contains sufficient paint to fully cover two to three 1/24 scale car bodies, providing excellent value for money and enough material for substantial projects without requiring multiple cans.
  • Compatible with Other Paint Types — Because Tamiya TS spray paints are unaffected by acrylic or enamel paints, you can layer them freely—apply your fluorescent base coat, then add finer details using acrylic or enamel colours without the risk of paint adhesion problems or colour lifting.
  • Ideal for Large Surfaces — The spray format makes painting large RC body panels, chassis components and expansive model surfaces far quicker and more uniform than hand-painting, delivering professional-looking results every time.
  • Quick Drying Time — The rapid curing properties of this synthetic lacquer mean you can handle painted components sooner, apply subsequent coats without lengthy waiting periods, and move your project forward at pace.
  • Professional Finish Quality — Designed and manufactured by Tamiya, a company with decades of experience in model paints, this spray delivers the flawless, consistent finish you see on museum-quality scale models and competition-winning RC cars.

Technical Performance

Tamiya TS-96 represents the pinnacle of synthetic lacquer spray paint technology for scale modelling. Unlike acrylic spray paints that can be affected by temperature and humidity, this lacquer-based formula provides superior adhesion to plastic surfaces, rapid hardening and exceptional colour density. The paint achieves optimal results when sprayed onto a white undercoat or white primer, which dramatically amplifies the fluorescent properties and allows the true orange hue to develop fully through successive coats. Each application adds depth and intensity to the colour; initial coats may appear closer to standard orange, but as you build up layers, the fluorescent characteristics intensify, transforming the finish into a brilliant, luminous orange that catches light in a way standard paints cannot achieve. The 100ml capacity yields approximately 200-300 square centimetres of full coverage, depending on spray distance, surface texture and number of coats applied. The synthetic lacquer dries to touch within minutes, though full hardness develops over the curing period. Because this paint is unaffected by enamel or acrylic paints applied over the top, you can use it as a bold base colour for multi-step finishing techniques—ideal for adding racing stripes, insignia, text and fine details using hand-brushed paints once your lacquer base has fully cured. Temperature and humidity stability make this an excellent choice for year-round modelling in the UK climate, where moisture control is often challenging.

Important Usage Notes

  • Not Suitable for Clear Polycarbonate Body Shells — Tamiya TS paint is specifically not designed for use with clear polycarbonate or LEXAN R/C body shells, as the paint will flake off and fail to adhere properly. If you are painting transparent polycarbonate RC bodies (common on many RC car models), you must use Tamiya PS spray paint instead, which is formulated specifically for polycarbonate compatibility.
  • White Primer Recommended — For optimal fluorescent effect and colour intensity, apply this paint over a white primer or white base coat; spraying directly onto dark or unprepared surfaces will mute the vibrant fluorescent properties and result in a darker, less striking finish.
  • Multiple Coats Increase Intensity — The fluorescent orange intensifies with each successive coat; expect the first coat to appear more conventional, with the true fluorescent character developing as you add 2-3 additional layers.
  • Compatibility with Other Finishes — Once your TS base coat is applied and cured, you can safely apply enamel and acrylic paints over the top for detailing, striping, lettering and artistic elements without risk of paint lifting or compatibility issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Tamiya TS-96 suitable for painting RC car bodies and large model surfaces? — Yes, absolutely. The spray format is specifically designed for painting large surfaces efficiently. Each 100ml can provides enough coverage for two to three 1/24 scale RC car bodies, making it perfect for RC enthusiasts who want a professional finish without the labour-intensive hand-painting process. The synthetic lacquer formula ensures rapid, even coverage and quick curing times.
  • What is the difference between Tamiya TS and PS spray paints? — Tamiya TS paint is a synthetic lacquer designed for general plastic model use and is incompatible with clear polycarbonate body shells. If you are painting transparent RC body shells made from polycarbonate or LEXAN (common on many RC cars), you must use Tamiya PS spray paint instead, as it is specifically formulated for polycarbonate adhesion. For standard plastic RC bodies and components, TS paint is the correct choice.
  • Why does the colour look different in photos compared to how it appears when sprayed? — Tamiya TS-96 is a genuine fluorescent colour, and the intensity increases dramatically with multiple coats. Initial applications may appear as a brighter standard orange, but successive coats develop the distinctive fluorescent properties, delivering the brilliant high-visibility orange you see on professional race vehicles. For best results, apply white primer first and use 2-3 coats to achieve the true fluorescent effect.
  • Can I use enamel or acrylic paints over Tamiya TS spray paint? — Yes, this is one of the key advantages of Tamiya TS paint. It is completely unaffected by acrylic or enamel paints, so you can apply your fluorescent orange base coat and then hand-paint details, stripes, text and graphics using enamel or acrylic colours. This layering approach allows for sophisticated, multi-step finish work on your RC models.
  • How long does it take for Tamiya TS-96 to dry? — The synthetic lacquer formulation cures in a short period of time compared to conventional acrylic paints. Whilst the paint dries to touch within minutes, full hardness develops over a few hours; you should allow adequate curing time before handling or applying additional coats, though the exact duration depends on temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Is this paint suitable for beginners? — Yes, spray paint is actually more beginner-friendly than hand-brushing for large surfaces. The key to success is using proper spray technique—light, even passes from the correct distance—and applying white primer beforehand to maximise the fluorescent effect. Beginners should practice on scrap plastic first to develop consistent spray technique before painting their finished models.
