Overview
The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-59 Dark Metallic Blue is a professional-grade polycarbonate paint system specifically engineered for RC car body shells and transparent polycarbonate components. Whether you're building a high-performance RC buggy, monster truck, or on-road racer, this paint delivers an authentic dark metallic blue finish that catches the light beautifully on the track or bashfield. Tamiya's dedication to quality means this paint has been formulated to work perfectly with the polycarbonate bodies used in modern RC car modelling, making it an essential product for anyone serious about finishing their RC builds to championship standards.
This is the paint of choice for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand professional results on their polycarbonate body shells. Each 100ml can contains the exact amount needed to complete one full model body, ensuring you have enough paint without wastage. The paint is specifically designed to be applied from the inside of the body shell – a technique that differs from traditional plastic model painting – which means you get a durable, professional finish that protects your investment in expensive RC bodies. RC car UK builders and racers rely on Tamiya spray paints because they understand the importance of quality finishing materials in both appearance and durability.
What sets this paint apart is its formulation for polycarbonate materials combined with its resistance to oil and fuel, making it absolutely safe to use on gas-powered RC bodies without degradation or chemical reaction. Whether you're preparing a ready-to-run RC car for the track or customising a race-kit build, this dark metallic blue delivers stunning visual depth and professional-grade durability that will stand up to the rigours of competitive RC racing and weekend bashing alike.
Key Features
- 100ml Per Can — Each spray can contains precisely 100ml of paint, which is the exact amount required to complete one full polycarbonate RC body shell, eliminating guesswork and ensuring complete coverage without excess waste.
- Formulated for Polycarbonate Bodies — This paint has been specifically developed for transparent polycarbonate shells used in RC car modelling, ensuring superior adhesion, durability and appearance compared to generic paints that may not bond properly with polycarbonate materials.
- Dark Metallic Blue Colour — The PS-59 shade delivers a sophisticated dark metallic blue finish with genuine metallic sparkle that catches light beautifully, making your RC car stand out on the track or in the pit area with authentic depth and visual interest.
- Oil and Fuel Resistant — These paints are completely impervious to oils and fuels, meaning they can be safely applied to gas-powered RC car bodies without any risk of chemical degradation, discolouration or paint failure even with prolonged exposure to fuel and lubricants.
- Inside-Application Method — Unlike traditional plastic model paints, this paint is designed to be applied from the inside of the polycarbonate body shell, providing superior protection and a more professional finish that's less prone to chipping on the outside.
- Professional Quality Finish — Tamiya's reputation for quality means this paint delivers a durable, professional-grade finish suitable for competition RC racing as well as recreational bashfield driving.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-59 Dark Metallic Blue represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate painting technology developed through decades of RC car hobby expertise. The 100ml volume in each can has been precisely calculated to provide complete coverage of a standard RC body shell with proper application technique. The paint's formulation specifically addresses the unique characteristics of polycarbonate materials, which differ significantly from conventional plastics and require specialised paint chemistry for optimal adhesion and durability. The dark metallic blue colour is achieved through a sophisticated pigment blend that includes metallic compounds, delivering genuine sparkle and depth rather than flat colour. The paint's resistance to oils and fuels is engineered into the molecular structure, making it suitable for use on both electric and nitro-powered RC vehicles without fear of chemical degradation. When applied from the inside of the body shell at the recommended 30cm distance, the paint cures to form a tough, protective layer that resists impacts, UV exposure and the wear that comes from competitive RC racing or aggressive bashfield use. Multiple coats can be applied as necessary for enhanced colour depth and coverage, with each coat bonding effectively to previous layers without crazing or adhesion failure. This engineering excellence is why serious RC enthusiasts across the UK specify Tamiya paints for their builds.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint on electric and nitro-powered RC cars? — Yes, absolutely. These paints are specifically formulated to be impervious to oils and fuels, making them completely safe to use on both electric-powered and nitro-powered RC bodies. The fuel resistance is built into the paint formula, so you don't need to worry about degradation regardless of your RC car's power source.
- How is the application technique different from painting regular plastic models? — With Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint, you apply the paint from the inside of the polycarbonate body shell rather than from the outside as you would with traditional plastic models. This inside-application method protects the painted surface from external damage and provides a more professional, durable finish. Keep the spray can approximately 30cm from the body surface when applying, and apply multiple coats as necessary for complete coverage.
- What happens if I use this paint on plastic models instead of polycarbonate? — You should never use these paints on plastic models. They are specifically formulated for polycarbonate materials and may not adhere properly to plastic, or could potentially damage certain plastic compounds. Always use these paints exclusively on polycarbonate body shells.
- Will one 100ml can be enough to paint my RC body completely? — Yes, the 100ml volume in each can has been precisely calculated as the appropriate amount for finishing one complete polycarbonate RC body shell with proper application technique. This means you won't run short of paint mid-project or be left with excessive leftover paint.
- Can I apply multiple coats for a deeper colour finish? — Yes, after the first coat has cured, you can apply additional coats as necessary to achieve deeper colour saturation and enhanced visual depth. Simply ensure the previous coat is fully cured before applying the next coat for best results.
- What is the dark metallic blue colour like compared to other blues? — The PS-59 Dark Metallic Blue is a sophisticated, darker shade of blue with genuine metallic sparkle rather than a bright or light blue. The metallic component means it catches light beautifully and appears more three-dimensional, making it ideal for showing off custom RC builds at the track or bashfield.
- Is this paint suitable for beginners in RC car modelling? — Yes, this paint is suitable for beginners, though first-time users should ensure they have adequate ventilation and safety equipment before starting. The application method (inside the body) is actually quite forgiving compared to outside painting, as it protects the finish from external damage. Simply follow the recommended 30cm spray distance and allow proper cure time between coats.
