Overview

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-17 Metallic Green is a professional-grade polycarbonate paint specifically engineered for RC car enthusiasts throughout the UK who demand authentic, durable finishes on their radio-controlled vehicles. This premium spray paint has been meticulously developed by Tamiya, a globally recognised leader in RC hobby innovation, to deliver exceptional results on transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling. Whether you're customising a brushless RC buggy, preparing a competition-grade RC monster truck, or finishing off your latest RC track car project, this metallic green formulation provides a stunning, hard-wearing colour that will make your model stand out on any circuit or at any RC club gathering across the UK.

What sets the Tamiya PS-17 Metallic Green apart from standard household spray paints is its specialist composition, which has been specifically formulated to bond perfectly with polycarbonate materials whilst remaining completely impervious to oils and fuels. This makes it the ideal choice for both electric RC cars and gas-powered RC models alike. The 100ml can contains precisely the right volume to finish one complete polycarbonate body shell, eliminating waste and ensuring consistent coverage without over-application. RC Model Shop is proud to stock this authorised Tamiya product, providing UK-based enthusiasts with genuine, quality paint that meets the exacting standards of Tamiya's engineering.

For serious RC hobbyists in the UK, whether you're a weekend basher or a competitive racer, using purpose-built RC paint products like the Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint series is non-negotiable. Standard spray paints can damage polycarbonate, but Tamiya's PS series has been specifically tested and approved for this application, giving you complete peace of mind when finishing your valued RC body shells.

Key Features

  • Specially Formulated for Polycarbonate Bodies — This paint was developed exclusively for use on transparent polycarbonate RC car bodies, not on conventional plastic models, which means it chemically bonds with polycarbonate in a way that standard paints simply cannot, ensuring maximum adhesion, durability and a professional finish that lasts.
  • 100ml Can Size — Each aerosol contains precisely 100ml of paint, which is the manufacturer's specified appropriate amount for completing one full polycarbonate body shell, eliminating guesswork about how much paint you need and preventing wasteful overspending on excess product.
  • Fuel and Oil Resistant — The paint is completely impervious to oils and fuels, making it safe for use on both electric-powered and nitro/gas-powered RC vehicles, meaning your finish will remain vibrant and undamaged even during extended outdoor RC sessions where fuel splashes and oil contact are inevitable.
  • Applied from Inside the Body Shell — Unlike traditional plastic model painting where you paint the outside, polycarbonate RC bodies are painted from the interior, which this product is specifically engineered to accommodate, providing superior paint adhesion and protection from UV and mechanical wear.
  • Stunning Metallic Green Finish — The PS-17 colour delivers an authentic, eye-catching metallic green that catches light beautifully, giving your RC car model a professional, competition-ready appearance that stands out at RC tracks and clubs throughout the UK.
  • Built-in UV Protection — The formulation is designed to resist fading and UV damage, ensuring your RC body maintains its vibrant metallic green colour even after extended outdoor racing and bashings in British sunlight.
  • Professional Spray Application — The aerosol format delivers consistent, even coverage when applied correctly at the recommended 30cm distance, allowing both experienced modellers and enthusiasts new to RC car UK customisation to achieve professional-quality results.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-17 Metallic Green represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate body finishing technology for RC cars in the UK market. The paint has been engineered using Tamiya's extensive research into polycarbonate chemistry, ensuring molecular compatibility between the paint film and the polycarbonate substrate. The 100ml volume per can is precisely calibrated to provide optimal coverage for a single complete RC body shell without excess or shortage. The formulation achieves its fuel and oil resistance through advanced resin systems that create a chemically resistant coating, making it equally suitable for electric RC car setups running on lithium batteries and high-performance nitro-powered RC vehicles that generate fuel contact during operation. The metallic green pigmentation is suspended in a lacquer-based carrier system that dries to a hard, glossy finish with depth and dimension. Application should occur at approximately 30cm distance from the polycarbonate surface, with multiple thin coats applied sequentially rather than one thick coat, allowing proper curing between applications. The curing time between coats varies with ambient temperature and humidity conditions typical in the UK, but allowing adequate drying time ensures maximum adhesion and finish quality. Professional RC competitors and casual hobbyists alike have relied on Tamiya's PS series paint range for decades, and this PS-17 Metallic Green maintains the brand's exacting standards for performance, colour accuracy and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint on plastic RC bodies instead of polycarbonate? — No, absolutely not. The manufacturer explicitly warns that these paints should never be used on plastic models. The formulation is engineered specifically for polycarbonate and will damage standard plastic bodies. Always verify your RC body shell material before purchasing any Tamiya Lexan paint.
  • How much does one 100ml can cover? — One 100ml can contains the exact appropriate amount for finishing one complete polycarbonate RC body shell. This sizing eliminates waste and is based on Tamiya's extensive field testing with standard RC car body designs from 1/10 to 1/8 scale.
  • Is this paint safe for both electric and nitro RC cars? — Yes, completely. The paint is formulated to be impervious to both oils and fuels, making it equally suitable for electric-powered RC vehicles and gas-powered or nitro-powered RC models. You can use this paint confidently regardless of your RC car's power system.
  • What is the correct application technique for polycarbonate body painting? — Unlike traditional plastic model painting, you apply this paint from inside the polycarbonate body shell rather than from the outside. Hold the can approximately 30cm away from the interior surface and apply thin, even coats, allowing proper curing time between each coat. Multiple thin applications produce better results than single thick coats.
  • How long does the paint take to cure between coats? — Curing time depends on ambient temperature and humidity conditions in your location across the UK. You should allow adequate drying time between coats before applying subsequent layers. Check Tamiya's specific guidance based on your local weather conditions for precise timing.
  • Why is polycarbonate body painting different from regular model painting? — Polycarbonate is a transparent plastic specifically chosen for RC bodies because it's lightweight, impact-resistant and allows light transmission. Its chemical properties require specialised paint formulations that bond properly with its structure, which is why Tamiya developed the PS series specifically for this purpose rather than recommending standard spray paints.
  • Is the metallic green finish durable enough for competitive RC racing? — Yes. The Tamiya PS-17 formulation is used by RC competitors throughout Europe and the UK for race-level vehicles. The metallic finish is hard-wearing, fuel-resistant and UV-stable, making it suitable for both casual recreational RC driving and serious competitive use.
  • Can I thin this paint or mix it with other products? — Tamiya produces dedicated thinners and lacquers specifically formulated for compatibility with their Lexan paint range. Do not mix with other manufacturers' products or use non-approved thinners, as this will compromise the paint's properties and adhesion to polycarbonate.
