Overview

The ARRMA Pinion Gear, 20T HD Mod1 Safe-D5 is an essential replacement part for RC enthusiasts who demand reliability and durability from their brushless RC vehicles. Whether you're running a high-performance 1/5 scale speed truck, a competitive 1/7 scale buggy, or any of the many ARRMA models in between, this precision-engineered pinion gear is the perfect addition to your RC tool box. Designed specifically for extreme RC conditions, this tough steel component ensures smooth power delivery from your brushless motor to your drivetrain, making it an indispensable upgrade or replacement part for anyone serious about their RC car performance.

This 20-tooth Mod1 pinion gear represents precision engineering at its finest, manufactured to exacting standards to deliver consistent, reliable performance every time you take your brushless RC vehicle to the track or the bash spot. The Safe-D5 design is particularly notable for UK RC car enthusiasts who want to maximise uptime and minimise unexpected failures during competition or weekend racing sessions. With a customer rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars, this component has proven itself time and again across a wide range of ARRMA RC models, from the legendary 1/8 TYPHON 6S to the powerful 1/5 KRATON 8S.

The pinion gear is compatible with a comprehensive range of ARRMA brushless RC vehicles, making it a versatile choice whether you own a single model or run a fleet of different scales and vehicle types. Its proven track record in extreme RC conditions means you can trust it to perform when it matters most.

Key Features

  • Strong and durable steel construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel that delivers exceptional longevity and resistance to wear, even under the punishing demands of high-power brushless RC applications and extreme driving conditions.
  • Precision manufactured wide tooth profile — The carefully engineered tooth geometry ensures smooth, consistent mesh with your spur gear, reducing noise, vibration and power loss while delivering maximum efficiency to the wheels.
  • Safe-D5 shaped bore with 5mm motor shaft compatibility — The distinctive D-shaped hole matches your motor shaft profile precisely, meaning drive and braking power are maintained even if the set-screw accidentally backs out during intense driving or racing sessions, eliminating the risk of losing power mid-run.
  • Precision manufactured threaded set-screw hole — The M4 x 4mm set-screw threads are manufactured to exact tolerances, ensuring a secure, repeatable fit that holds fast under the extreme torque and vibration generated by high-performance brushless motors.
  • Complete retention package included — Every pinion gear comes supplied with a 3.2mm E-clip and M4 x 4mm set-screw, providing multiple layers of security to keep your pinion gear locked firmly in place on your 5mm motor shaft.

Technical Performance

The ARRMA 20T Mod1 Safe-D5 Pinion Gear represents the cutting edge of RC drivetrain component engineering. Manufactured to Mod1 (Module 1) specifications, this 20-tooth gear is designed to mesh perfectly with standard ARRMA spur gears, delivering precise power transmission in brushless RC vehicles ranging from 1/5 scale speed trucks down to 1/8 scale buggies and stunt trucks. The wide tooth profile is a hallmark of professional-grade RC components, distributing load across a larger contact area to reduce stress concentrations and extend component lifespan even under continuous high-power operation. The steel material selection provides hardness and durability that far exceeds plastic alternatives, essential for the high-speed rotation and extreme torque loads encountered in modern brushless RC systems. The Safe-D5 bore design is particularly significant for reliability — the D-shaped profile prevents the pinion gear from slipping on the motor shaft even if vibration causes the set-screw to loosen, a critical safety feature that ensures you maintain drive and braking authority in any driving situation. Compatible with 5mm motor shafts common to ARRMA brushless motors, this pinion gear integrates seamlessly into your existing RC setup. The precision-threaded set-screw hole ensures consistent clamping force that holds firm under the extreme torque generated by high-powered brushless motors, whilst the included 3.2mm E-clip provides secondary retention for added security.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does the Safe-D5 designation mean and why does it matter? — The Safe-D5 refers to the D-shaped bore that matches a 5mm motor shaft. The D-shaped profile prevents slipping even if your set-screw backs out during intense driving, ensuring you never lose drive or braking power unexpectedly. This is a critical safety feature for competitive RC racing and high-performance driving.
  • Which ARRMA RC models is this pinion gear compatible with? — This 20T Mod1 Safe-D5 pinion gear is compatible with a wide range of ARRMA vehicles including 1/5 scale KRATON and OUTCAST models, 1/7 scale BIG ROCK, FELONY, FIRETEAM, INFRACTION, LIMITLESS, MOJAVE and 1/8 scale KRATON, NOTORIOUS, OUTCAST, TALION and TYPHON brushless RC trucks and buggies.
  • What size motor shaft does this pinion gear fit? — This pinion gear is precision engineered to suit 5mm motor shaft diameter, which is the standard size on ARRMA brushless motors fitted to their full range of RC vehicles.
  • Why should I choose this over cheaper plastic pinion gears? — This pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which offers dramatically superior durability, wear resistance and longevity compared to plastic alternatives. In high-power brushless RC applications, the increased durability of steel components means fewer replacements, better performance consistency and ultimately lower running costs over time. The precision manufacturing and Safe-D5 bore design also deliver superior reliability and peace of mind.
  • Is this pinion gear suitable for beginners? — Yes, this is an excellent choice for anyone running ARRMA brushless RC vehicles. The included set-screw and E-clip make installation straightforward, and the Safe-D5 design adds an extra layer of reliability that beginners will appreciate. It's also a sensible spare part to carry in your RC tool box regardless of experience level.
  • What is Mod1 tooth pitch and why does it matter? — Mod1 (Module 1) is a standard gear pitch specification used across ARRMA's range of RC vehicles. Using the correct Mod1 specification ensures perfect meshing with your spur gear, maximising efficiency and minimising noise and wear. Mixing different tooth pitches will result in poor performance and premature failure.
  • What is the difference between 19T, 20T and 21T pinion gears? — The tooth count determines the gear ratio and therefore your vehicle's performance characteristics. A 20T pinion delivers a balanced ratio for general purpose RC driving. A 19T pinion provides a lower ratio for higher top speed, whilst a 21T offers a higher ratio for better acceleration and torque. Choose based on your track or terrain conditions and desired performance characteristics.
