Overview

The Tamiya PS-45 Translucent Purple Polycarbonate Spray Paint is a premium paint system specifically engineered for RC car enthusiasts in the UK who demand professional-quality finishes on their polycarbonate body shells. This specialised spray paint has been developed exclusively by Tamiya for decorating transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling, offering a vibrant translucent purple shade that creates a stunning frosted glass appearance when applied correctly. Whether you're building a competitive RC car, customising a weekend basher, or restoring a treasured model, this polycarbonate spray paint delivers the authentic factory finish that serious RC modellers expect.

What sets this paint apart from standard plastic model paints is its formulation specifically for polycarbonate materials, which requires a completely different approach to painting. Rather than painting the exterior of the body like traditional plastic model kits, polycarbonate bodies are painted from the inside, allowing the translucent colour to shine through and create that distinctive jewel-like appearance that makes high-end RC car bodies so visually striking. The 100ml can contains the perfect amount of paint to finish one complete model body, eliminating waste and ensuring consistent colour coverage across your entire RC vehicle. This makes it the ideal choice for RC enthusiasts across the UK who want their models to look as professional and polished as they perform on the track or trail.

The translucent purple finish can be used on its own to create a beautiful candy-like effect, or layered with Tamiya PS-41 Translucent Silver to achieve an authentic mica effect that catches the light and adds depth and visual interest to your polycarbonate body. These paints are completely impervious to oil and fuels, making them safe for use on glow engine R/C car bodies and gas-powered RC vehicles, a crucial feature for serious nitro engine enthusiasts. If you're searching for quality RC car paint in the UK, polycarbonate body paint, or professional-grade spray paint for your RC models, the Tamiya PS-45 represents the gold standard in the hobby.

Key Features

  • Specialised Polycarbonate Formula — This paint is not a generic spray paint; it has been specifically formulated by Tamiya engineers to work exclusively with transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling, ensuring perfect adhesion and durability that ordinary model paints simply cannot provide.
  • Translucent Purple Shade — The rich translucent purple colour creates a stunning frosted glass effect on polycarbonate bodies, offering a distinctive and professional appearance that makes your RC car stand out on the track or at the hobby shop.
  • Mica Effect Capability — Use this translucent purple paint in combination with Tamiya PS-41 Translucent Silver to achieve a sophisticated mica effect finish, adding depth and light-catching properties that enhance the visual appeal of your polycarbonate body.
  • 100ml Capacity — Perfect Quantity — Each aerosol can contains exactly 100ml of paint, which is the precise amount required to finish one complete R/C car body shell, eliminating waste and ensuring you have just enough product without excess.
  • Oil and Fuel Resistant — The paint formulation is completely impervious to oil and fuels, making it safe for application on glow engine R/C car bodies and gas-powered RC vehicles without fear of paint degradation or damage.
  • Inside-Spray Application Method — Unlike traditional plastic model painting, polycarbonate bodies are painted from the inside, creating a protective barrier while allowing the translucent colour to shine through for a jewel-like appearance that cannot be achieved any other way.
  • Professional Factory Finish — When applied correctly using the recommended 30cm distance and proper curing techniques, this paint delivers a smooth, even, professional-grade finish that rivals factory-painted RC car bodies.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting — The robust paint formulation resists chipping, fading, and wear, ensuring your RC car maintains its stunning appearance through countless runs on the track, trail, or basher course.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya PS-45 Translucent Purple represents the pinnacle of polycarbonate paint engineering, developed through years of R/C model experience and refined through countless applications by professional modellers and serious hobbyists alike. The paint delivers exceptional coverage and colour saturation when applied to polycarbonate substrates from the inside of the body shell, creating a finish that is both visually striking and mechanically durable. The formulation is engineered to cure properly at room temperature after application, with manufacturers recommending application of multiple coats for optimal colour depth and opacity. The paint's resistance to oil and fuels is a critical performance feature, particularly important for RC car enthusiasts running glow-plug nitro engines or fuel-powered vehicles, where traditional paints would degrade and flake away. The 100ml capacity is calculated to provide complete coverage for a single polycarbonate body shell when applied using the recommended technique of spraying from inside the body at approximately 30cm distance, ensuring even atomisation and smooth paint flow. The translucent properties of this paint allow light to pass through the polycarbonate body, creating that distinctive jewel-like appearance that characterises premium RC car finishes. Brush painting of small details is possible using Tamiya bottle paints specifically formulated for polycarbonate, allowing modellers to combine spray and brush techniques for maximum visual impact and precision detailing on areas like headlights, grilles, and graphic elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use Tamiya PS-45 Translucent Purple on plastic model kits? — Absolutely not. This paint is formulated exclusively for transparent polycarbonate bodies used in R/C car modelling. Using it on plastic model kits will result in poor adhesion, cracking, and an unsatisfactory finish. Always use this paint only on polycarbonate RC car bodies.
  • How do I apply this polycarbonate spray paint to my RC car body? — Paint your polycarbonate body from the inside, not the outside like a traditional plastic model. Keep the spray can approximately 30cm from the surface and apply an even coat. Allow proper curing time, then apply additional coats as necessary until you achieve your desired colour depth and opacity. The inside-spray method allows the translucent colour to show through the polycarbonate for a professional jewel-like finish.
  • Is this paint suitable for glow engine nitro RC cars? — Yes, this is one of the key advantages of Tamiya PS-45. The paint formulation is completely impervious to oil and fuels, making it safe for use on R/C car bodies powered by glow plug nitro engines. You can confidently use this paint on gas-powered RC vehicles without fear of paint degradation.
  • How much paint do I need for one RC car body? — The 100ml can contains the perfect amount of paint to finish one complete polycarbonate body shell. This quantity has been carefully calculated by Tamiya to provide adequate coverage for a single model when using the recommended spray technique and application method.
  • Can I mix PS-45 Translucent Purple with other Tamiya polycarbonate colours? — Yes, you can create custom colour effects by layering PS-45 with other translucent colours or with Tamiya PS-41 Translucent Silver. Layering translucent purple with translucent silver creates a stunning mica effect that catches light beautifully and adds considerable visual depth to your RC car body.
  • What is the difference between translucent and opaque polycarbonate paints? — Translucent paints allow light to pass through, creating a jewel-like, frosted glass appearance that showcases the transparent polycarbonate material. Opaque paints provide complete colour coverage. Translucent shades like PS-45 are specifically designed to enhance the natural transparency of polycarbonate bodies, creating a distinctive visual effect that cannot be achieved with opaque paints.
  • How long does the paint take to cure? — After spraying, allow adequate curing time before handling or applying additional coats. Tamiya recommends allowing proper curing between coats, though specific cure times are not specified in the technical documentation. Always allow sufficient drying time in a well-ventilated area before use or handling your finished body.
  • Can I use small detail brushes with this spray paint? — The spray paint itself is designed for aerosol application. However, for painting small details on your polycarbonate body, use Tamiya bottle paints that are formulated for polycarbonate. These can be applied with fine brushes for precise detail work such as headlight inserts, grille details, and graphic elements.
