Overview
The Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-39 Translucent Light Blue is a specialist polycarbonate paint formulated specifically for decorating transparent lexan bodies used in RC car modelling. Whether you're building a high-performance 1/10 scale RC touring car, a nimble 1/8 scale buggy, or any other RC vehicle with a polycarbonate shell, this translucent light blue paint delivers professional results with exceptional ease of application. Tamiya's PS spray paint range has been developed exclusively for lexan bodies, making it the preferred choice for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand quality finishes and reliable performance on their RC cars.
Each 100ml aerosol can contains exactly the right amount of paint to finish one complete model body, eliminating waste and making your project planning straightforward. This paint is impervious to oil and fuels, so it can be safely used on gas-powered RC bodies without degradation or peeling, ensuring durability whether you're running an electric or nitro-powered RC vehicle. The translucent light blue formulation creates a frosted glass aesthetic that transforms your lexan body into a visually striking component that catches the light beautifully during high-speed runs at the track or during casual weekend bashing.
For RC enthusiasts in the UK seeking professional-grade paint that works reliably, delivers consistent coverage, and produces finishes that rival professional paint shops, Tamiya Lexan Spray Paint PS-39 Translucent Light Blue is an essential addition to your modelling supplies. The application process is straightforward, atomisation is even and predictable, and the paint dries quickly, allowing you to progress through multiple coats without extended waiting periods between applications.
Key Features
- 100ml Aerosol Can — Each can contains precisely 100ml of paint, which is the manufacturer-calculated amount required to finish one complete RC car body shell, eliminating guesswork about quantity and ensuring you have sufficient paint without excessive leftover material.
- Translucent Finish — The translucent light blue formulation creates a frosted glass appearance on polycarbonate bodies, providing depth and visual appeal that solid colours cannot achieve, making your RC car stand out on the track or at the bash spot.
- Interior Application Method — Paint is applied from inside the polycarbonate body shell rather than the outside of traditional plastic model kits, protecting the finish from damage during high-speed RC driving and creating a more durable, professional-looking result.
- Oil and Fuel Resistant — The paint is completely impervious to engine oils and fuels, making it perfectly safe for use on gas-powered RC bodies where contact with fuel is inevitable, without risk of paint degradation, peeling or discolouration over time.
- Even Atomisation — The spray mechanism produces consistent, fine atomisation that applies paint evenly without spitting or running, allowing even novice RC modellers to achieve professional-quality finishes with minimal overspray and excellent coverage.
- Fast Drying — Paint cures quickly between coats, enabling you to apply multiple layers efficiently without long waiting periods, meaning you can complete your body finishing in a single session.
- Mica Colour Effect Capability — The translucent light blue can be combined with Tamiya's Bright Silver paint to achieve deep, complex mica colour effects that shimmer and change appearance depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions.
Technical Performance
Tamiya's PS spray paint range represents decades of specialist knowledge in RC car finishing, engineered specifically for the demands of polycarbonate body decoration. The PS-39 Translucent Light Blue formulation has been precisely balanced to deliver optimal atomisation from standard aerosol spray mechanisms, ensuring consistent paint application whether you're spraying in UK workshop conditions or outdoor environments. The paint's chemical composition is engineered to adhere permanently to polycarbonate without requiring surface primers or adhesion promoters, simplifying the preparation process for RC modellers. The translucent formulation maintains full colour opacity whilst allowing light transmission through the body shell, creating the distinctive frosted glass aesthetic that makes translucent Tamiya paints so popular amongst competitive and casual RC enthusiasts. The paint's resistance to oils and fuels is achieved through the use of advanced resin systems that create a cross-linked polymer film, ensuring that contact with nitro fuel, synthetic oil, and other common RC car fluids cannot degrade or soften the finish. Coverage is exceptional, with experienced RC modellers reporting that a single 100ml can is sufficient to coat most 1/10 scale touring car shells with multiple coats, though application of a secondary backing coat in white or black is often preferred to enhance colour saturation and visual depth. The paint's drying characteristics are optimised for workshop use, with dust-dry conditions achieved within minutes, allowing rapid progression through multiple coats without extended waiting periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use this paint on plastic model kits? — No, this paint must never be used on traditional plastic models. It is formulated exclusively for polycarbonate (lexan) RC car bodies. Using it on plastic will result in paint failure and potential damage to the model.
- How many coats will one can cover on a 1/10 scale RC touring car body? — One 100ml can is the manufacturer-specified amount to finish a complete model body. Most experienced RC modellers apply 2-3 coats per body to achieve optimal colour saturation and durability, with a secondary backing coat in white or black often preferred to enhance the translucent effect and ensure vibrant colour appearance.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Tamiya PS spray paints are designed for ease of use and deliver professional results even when applied by inexperienced modellers. The atomisation is consistent and forgiving, and the application method—spraying from inside the body shell—is inherently more protective than external painting. As long as you maintain the recommended 30cm distance from the surface and apply light dust coats before full coverage coats, you will achieve excellent results.
- What is the difference between translucent and solid Tamiya PS paints? — Translucent paints such as PS-39 Light Blue are designed to allow light transmission through the polycarbonate body, creating a frosted glass aesthetic and the ability to layer them with metallic backing paints like Bright Silver to create complex mica effects. Solid paints such as PS-5 Black provide complete opacity and solid colour coverage. The choice depends on your desired visual aesthetic and whether you want the body shell to transmit light.
- Can I use this on gas-powered RC car bodies? — Yes, this paint is completely safe for use on nitro and petrol-powered RC vehicles. The formulation is impervious to engine oils, fuel, and synthetic blends, meaning it will not degrade, peel, or discolour when exposed to these substances during engine operation and refuelling.
- How should I prepare the polycarbonate body before painting? — Polycarbonate bodies should be clean and dry before painting. Wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. No primer or surface preparation is required—the paint adheres directly to clean polycarbonate without additional treatment. Paint from inside the body shell, keeping the aerosol can approximately 30cm from the interior surface.
- Can I combine translucent light blue with other Tamiya colours? — Yes. Tamiya's translucent colours are specifically designed to be layered with backing colours. Apply translucent light blue first, and then apply Bright Silver from the inside to create a deep mica colour effect that shimmers and changes appearance depending on lighting and viewing angle. You can also use white or black as a backing colour depending on your preferred final appearance.
- How long does the paint take to dry between coats? — Tamiya PS paints dry very quickly. You can apply subsequent coats within minutes of the previous coat becoming dust-dry. Most modellers find they can apply 2-3 coats in a single session without significant waiting time, making body finishing efficient and convenient.
