Overview

The Tamiya TS-89 Pearl Blue spray paint is a premium synthetic lacquer formulated to deliver a rich, metallic blue finish that perfectly captures the iconic Red Bull Racing Renault RB6 colour scheme. This professional-grade spray paint is essential for any serious RC modeller or plastic scale model enthusiast who demands authentic, realistic finishes on their projects. Whether you're painting RC car bodies, motorcycle models, or static plastic scale models, this 100ml can of high-quality lacquer provides exceptional coverage and colour depth that simply cannot be achieved with standard acrylic paints alone.

Available in the UK through RC Model Shop, the Tamiya TS-89 is trusted by hobbyists, competitive modellers, and professional builders across the country. The distinctive metallic blue tone has a deep colour saturation that works beautifully on both 1/24 scale car bodies and larger RC models, making it one of the most versatile colours in the Tamiya spray paint range. If you're building an RC car in the UK and want factory-finish results that rival the real thing, this is the paint system professional modellers choose. The synthetic lacquer formula ensures rapid curing times, so you can move on to detailing work quickly without long waiting periods.

RC enthusiasts, whether basking at the weekend or competing seriously, understand that the finish on your model reflects your dedication to quality. Tamiya's TS spray paints have been the gold standard for scale model finishing for decades, and this Pearl Blue variant is no exception. The deep metallic quality of this colour makes it particularly suitable for high-end display models and competitive RC racing machines where appearance matters just as much as performance.

Key Features

  • Premium Metallic Blue Finish — The rich, deep metallic blue colour provides an authentic, professional appearance that realistically expresses the unique paint finish found on premium racing machines and scale models, delivering exceptional visual impact whether on display or in action.
  • 100ml Capacity — Each can contains a generous 100ml of paint, which is enough to fully cover two or three 1/24 scale sized car bodies, giving you excellent value and reducing the number of cans you need to purchase for larger projects.
  • Synthetic Lacquer Formula — The paint is formulated as a high-quality synthetic lacquer that cures in a short period of time, allowing you to progress to detailed finishing work faster than with slower-drying paint systems without compromising on durability or appearance.
  • Compatible with Multiple Paint Systems — Tamiya spray paints are not affected by acrylic or enamel paints, which means that following your overall base coat, you can safely add fine details and pick out features using enamel and acrylic paints without any adhesion or compatibility issues.
  • Ideal for Large Surface Coverage — These spray cans are extremely useful for painting large surfaces quickly and evenly, making them far more efficient than hand-painting for covering the expansive body panels found on 1/10 scale RC cars, 1/8 scale buggies, and larger scale models.
  • Professional Finishing System — By combining synthetic lacquer base coats with enamel and acrylic detail paints, the finishing of plastic models becomes simpler and more effective, allowing you to achieve competition-grade results that distinguish your models from the rest.
  • Red Bull Racing Authenticity — This colour is specifically formulated to match the Red Bull Racing Renault RB6, making it the ideal choice for anyone building Formula 1-inspired RC models or wanting authentic racing liveries on their vehicles.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya TS-89 Pearl Blue represents the pinnacle of spray paint engineering for scale models. The synthetic lacquer formulation provides rapid curing characteristics that allow you to work efficiently through multiple paint layers without extended downtime. The metallic pigmentation is finely suspended in the lacquer base, ensuring even spray distribution and consistent colour saturation across large surface areas. This paint system is specifically engineered to remain unaffected by subsequent applications of acrylic or enamel paints, which means you can build complex multi-paint finishes with absolute confidence that earlier layers won't be compromised. The 100ml capacity in a standard aerosol can is calibrated for optimal spray pressure and coverage, delivering professional results without the need for specialist equipment. For UK modellers building RC cars, the paint's quick-curing nature is particularly valuable, as it eliminates the lengthy drying periods that can slow down project completion. The deep metallic blue tone offers excellent light-reflecting properties, which enhances visual depth and dimension on curved body panels and aerodynamic surfaces common to modern RC vehicles. Whether you're working on 1/10 scale RC buggies, 1/8 scale trucks, or larger static models, this paint system delivers consistent, factory-quality results that rival original manufacturer finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Tamiya TS-89 Pearl Blue suitable for RC car bodies? — Yes, this paint is excellent for RC car bodies, though it is important to note that Tamiya TS spray paint is not designed to be used with clear polycarbonate or LEXAN RC body shells, as the paint will flake off such surfaces. For polycarbonate applications, you should use Tamiya PS spray paint instead. The TS-89 works perfectly on plastic scale model bodies and painted metal or composite RC bodies.
  • How much coverage does a 100ml can provide? — Each 100ml can of Tamiya TS-89 is formulated to provide enough paint to fully cover two or three 1/24 scale sized car bodies. For larger scale models or multiple thick coats, you may need additional cans, but for typical single-coat or double-coat applications, one can is usually sufficient for a standard RC car body.
  • Can I use other paints over Tamiya TS-89? — Absolutely. One of the key advantages of Tamiya TS spray paints is that they are not affected by acrylic or enamel paints. This means you can apply your metallic blue base coat and then confidently add details, pick out features, and apply fine paint work using enamel and acrylic paints without any adhesion or compatibility issues.
  • How long does Tamiya TS-89 take to cure? — The synthetic lacquer formulation in Tamiya TS spray paints cures in a short period of time compared to many alternative paint systems. This rapid curing allows you to progress quickly through multiple paint layers and move on to detailed finishing work without lengthy waiting periods that slow down project completion.
  • Is this colour only for Red Bull models? — While the TS-89 Pearl Blue is specifically formulated to match the Red Bull Racing Renault RB6 colour scheme, the rich metallic blue finish is versatile enough for use on a wide range of models. The deep colour tone can be widely used for car models and motorcycle models beyond just Red Bull-inspired builds, making it a valuable addition to any modeller's paint collection.
  • What is the equivalent lacquer paint for hand-painting? — Tamiya offers the LP-47 Pearl Blue as an equivalent lacquer paint for hand-brushing applications if you prefer not to use spray cans or need to touch up small areas. This allows you to maintain colour consistency across different painting methods.
  • Is this paint suitable for beginners? — Spray painting requires some practice to achieve professional results, and working with synthetic lacquer requires proper ventilation and safety precautions including respirator masks suitable for lacquer fumes. Whilst the Tamiya TS system is user-friendly, beginners should practice on test pieces first and ensure they have proper workspace setup before attempting full model finishes.
  • Why would I choose spray paint over hand-painting? — Spray paint is far more efficient for covering large surface areas like RC car bodies, providing even colour distribution and avoiding visible brush strokes. The Tamiya TS range delivers professional factory-quality finishes that are extremely difficult to achieve with hand-painting alone, and the rapid curing allows multiple coats in a single working session.
