Overview

The AXIAL Pinion Gear 32P 16T Steel 3mm Motor Shaft is an essential replacement and upgrade component for RC enthusiasts running Axial rock crawlers and monster trucks across the UK. This precision-engineered pinion gear is designed to work seamlessly with 3mm motor shafts and is compatible with a wide range of Axial models, including the popular SCX10 III series, SMT10 monster trucks, and RR10 rock racers. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor looking to optimise your drivetrain or a weekend basher seeking reliable replacement parts, this steel pinion gear delivers the durability and performance you need to keep your RC car UK-ready and competitive.

Manufactured by Axial, a recognised leader in scale RC vehicle engineering, this pinion gear represents quality engineering designed specifically for serious RC hobbyists. The 16-tooth configuration at 32 pitch provides a direct connection between your motor and the rest of your drivetrain, making it a critical component for controlling speed and torque delivery. Steel construction ensures exceptional durability and resistance to wear, even under the demanding conditions of rock crawling, off-road bashing, or competitive racing. If you're running an Axial ready to run RC crawler or rock racer, having quality replacement gears in your spares box is essential to keep your vehicle performing at its best.

This is not a standalone vehicle or complete kit—it is a specialist drivetrain component designed for owners who already run Axial RC models or those building custom setups. It serves as both an optional upgrade for performance tuning and a critical replacement part for maintaining your RC car when wear occurs. Understanding gear ratios and tooth counts is fundamental to getting the most from your RC experience, and this pinion gear plays a direct role in how your motor's power is converted into wheel speed and torque.

Key Features

  • 32 Pitch Specification — The 32 pitch (32P) designation indicates the gear tooth profile and size, which is the standard specification for Axial drivetrain components, ensuring perfect compatibility with matching spur gears and transfer gears in your RC vehicle's transmission system.
  • 16-Tooth Configuration — The 16-tooth count strikes a balance between acceleration and top speed in your RC model, making it suitable for a variety of driving conditions from competitive rock crawling to recreational bashing without excessive drain on your motor or battery.
  • Steel Construction — Unlike plastic or softer metal alternatives, the steel material provides superior strength and wear resistance, allowing this gear to withstand repeated engagement and high torque loads without stripping teeth or becoming damaged, extending the service life of your drivetrain.
  • 3mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — The gear is precisely engineered with a 3mm bore to fit directly onto 3mm diameter motor shafts found in Axial vehicles, ensuring a secure fit and reliable power transmission without slippage or vibration during operation.
  • Precision Engineering — Each pinion gear is manufactured to strict tolerances, guaranteeing smooth meshing with your vehicle's spur gear and optimal performance consistency across multiple vehicles and replacement cycles.

Technical Performance

The AXIAL Pinion Gear 32P 16T Steel 3mm Motor Shaft is engineered from high-quality steel, a material choice that reflects Axial's commitment to durability in the RC hobby market. The 32 pitch specification aligns with industry-standard RC drivetrain sizing, ensuring this component integrates seamlessly with OEM and aftermarket parts designed for Axial vehicles. The 16-tooth count is a popular configuration that provides a measured approach to gear ratios—it's neither overly aggressive nor overly conservative, making it suitable for a broad spectrum of driving applications. For drivers seeking faster acceleration, lower tooth counts are available; for those wanting maximum top speed, higher tooth counts exist. This 16-tooth option represents a sensible middle ground that won't excessively stress your motor or battery whilst still delivering responsive power delivery. The 3mm shaft bore is precision-machined to eliminate wobble and ensure consistent alignment with your motor, which is critical for smooth operation and longevity. Steel's superior hardness compared to alternative materials means this gear resists the micro-damage and deformation that can occur over hundreds of engagement cycles, maintaining tooth profile integrity and mesh quality long-term. Whether you're running a brushless or brushed motor system, this pinion gear's robust construction makes it equally suited to either application, accommodating the torque characteristics of modern brushless RC motorsports components.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this pinion gear compatible with all Axial RC models? — No. This 3mm motor shaft version is designed for specific Axial models including the SCX10 III series, SMT10 monster trucks, RR10 rock racers, and Wraith Spawn. Always verify your vehicle's motor shaft diameter before purchasing, as Axial produces alternative versions with 5mm shafts for different applications. Check your vehicle's manual or contact your retailer if you're unsure.
  • What is the difference between 32 pitch and other pitch sizes? — Pitch refers to the tooth profile size and spacing on the gear. A 32 pitch gear has smaller, more closely-spaced teeth compared to lower pitch numbers like 24 pitch or 20 pitch. Different Axial models use different pitch specifications, so it's essential to match your pinion gear pitch to your vehicle's spur gear pitch to ensure proper meshing and avoid drivetrain damage.
  • How often will I need to replace this pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and lubrication, a steel pinion gear like this should provide extended service life—often lasting many months of regular use before requiring replacement. Factors affecting longevity include driving style, terrain difficulty, maintenance frequency, and whether you're using brushless or brushed motors. Aggressive rock crawling or high-speed bashing on rough terrain may wear gears faster than casual recreational driving.
  • Can I use this gear to improve performance in my Axial crawler? — Yes, by changing to a different tooth count gear, you can alter your vehicle's performance characteristics. A lower tooth count (like 12T or 13T) increases speed but reduces torque, whilst a higher tooth count increases acceleration and climbing power. The 16T is a balanced option suitable for mixed-use applications. If you're upgrading from the original gear, research the pros and cons of alternative tooth counts to find the best match for your intended use.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — This is a replacement part, not a beginner-friendly product on its own. You'll need to already own an Axial RC vehicle and have basic mechanical knowledge of how to remove and install drivetrain components. If you're new to RC, consider purchasing a ready to run RC vehicle first, then learn about drivetrain maintenance from experienced RC enthusiasts or your local RC hobby shop before attempting gear replacement.
  • What is the difference between steel and plastic pinion gears? — Steel gears offer superior durability, wear resistance, and longevity compared to plastic alternatives. Plastic gears are lighter and less expensive but wear faster and can break under high torque or sustained aggressive driving. For serious RC hobbyists, steel is the preferred choice for long-term reliability and performance consistency.
