Overview

The Traxxas Shock caps, GTX shocks / spring perch / adjusters / 2.5x14mm CS (2 pcs) (for 2 shocks) TRX7764 represents essential replacement and upgrade components for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand precision suspension tuning. Whether you're running a high-performance RC monster truck, 1/5 scale electric bashing machine, or preparing for competitive racing, these GTX shock caps and associated tuning components give you the control needed to dial in your vehicle's suspension for any terrain and driving style. Suspension tuning is where the real performance gains happen in RC racing and bashingbeyond just raw power, a properly tuned suspension puts more grip to the ground, improves handling consistency, and keeps your RC car stable across varied surfaces. These genuine Traxxas components are designed to work seamlessly with GTX shock absorbers, allowing you to adjust ride height, damping characteristics, and spring preload with precision engineering that Traxxas is renowned for.

Proper shock tuning isn't just for professional RC racers—any RC car UK enthusiast will benefit from understanding and adjusting their suspension setup. Traxxas shock absorbers use a time-tested design where a coil spring sits over a damper filled with silicone oil, creating a system that must absorb jolts, store energy, and then release it whilst resisting oscillation. The shock caps included in this set are critical components in this system, interfacing between the spring perch and the shock body itself. By upgrading to precision-engineered shock caps and having adjustable components, you gain the ability to fine-tune your vehicle's behaviour on demand.

This two-piece set is perfect for users who need replacement parts or want to experiment with different suspension settings across their fleet of RC vehicles. The included spring perches and adjustment rings allow you to modify ride height and spring preload without requiring specialised tools, making suspension tuning accessible to all skill levels in the RC hobby.

Key Features

  • GTX Shock Compatible Design — These shock caps are specifically engineered to work with GTX shock absorbers, ensuring perfect fitment and reliable performance without compatibility issues or poor sealing.
  • Precision Spring Perches — The included spring perches (qty 2) allow you to position the coil spring exactly where it needs to be on the shock damper, critical for controlling spring rate delivery and chassis behaviour.
  • Ride Height Adjustment Rings — Threaded adjustment rings enable precise tuning of ride height without requiring separate spacers, allowing you to raise or lower your chassis to suit different terrain and driving conditions.
  • 2.5x14mm CS Fasteners — Quality stainless steel 2.5x14mm screws are included for secure fastening of shock caps to your suspension components, preventing loosening under high-impact driving.
  • Two-Piece Set for Both Shocks — This package includes all components needed to upgrade or replace caps on two shock absorbers, meaning a complete front or rear suspension refresh with a single order.
  • Suspension Tuning Foundation — By controlling spring preload and ride height, you directly influence how your RC vehicle handles bumps, corners, and jumps, making these components essential for optimising performance across terrain types.
  • Genuine Traxxas Quality — Manufactured by Traxxas, these components meet the precision standards you'd expect from a brand that powers RC vehicles at every level from backyard bashing to professional racing.

Technical Performance

Understanding suspension tuning requires knowing how shock absorbers actually work. Every Traxxas shock uses a coil spring and a damper working together—the spring absorbs jolts and stores energy, whilst the damper (filled with oil and featuring a piston with precision holes) controls how quickly the suspension rebounds and prevents excessive oscillation. These shock caps and spring perches are the interface components that hold this system together. The adjustment rings allow you to change spring preload, which is the amount the spring is compressed when your RC car is at rest. Preload doesn't add suspension travel—it simply supports the chassis weight—but adjusting it by threading the collar up or down the shock body changes your ride height relative to the ground. Ride height should typically be set near the middle of your suspension travel to balance up-travel (for absorbing bumps) and down-travel (for dropping into holes and dips). For smooth, high-grip conditions, lower ride height will lower your centre of gravity and improve cornering. For rough terrain and loose conditions, higher ride height improves ground clearance and allows more up-travel for big hits and jump landings. These precision components support the oil-filled damper design that Traxxas carefully optimises for each model, with most Traxxas vehicles using 30-weight silicone oil and pistons with specific hole sizes to balance damping force. The 2.5x14mm fasteners ensure secure assembly without vibration-induced loosening during intense driving sessions.

Suspension Setup and Tuning Guide

Once you've installed these components, understanding how to use the adjustment rings is key. Each full turn of the spring retainer collar changes ride height by roughly one complete rotation of the shock body threads. Traxxas recommends filling one of the ridges on the collar with paint so you can easily count each turn as you adjust—this precision approach helps you dial in consistent settings and remember your optimal configuration. Common ride-height reference points used by RC drivers are "driveshafts level" (where the driveshaft sits parallel to the ground) and "arms level" (where the suspension arms are level), with most racers finding their sweet spot 1-3mm lower at the front than the rear to improve steering response and counteract weight transfer under acceleration. Spring rate and damping must work together—if you've increased damping (through piston selection or higher viscosity oil), stiffer springs may be required to prevent the shocks from "packing up" in bumpy terrain. Conversely, if damping is very light, softer springs restore control and prevent excessive bouncing. The factory settings on your Traxxas vehicle are always the best starting point, and these components give you the tools to experiment and find your optimal setup for your specific driving style and terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between shock caps, spring perches, and adjustment rings? — The shock cap sits atop the shock absorber and seals the damper assembly. The spring perch is the component that the coil spring sits on, determining its position on the damper. The adjustment ring (also called the spring retainer collar) threads onto the shock body and can be turned up or down to compress the spring more or less, thereby changing ride height and spring preload. Together, these three components allow you to tune suspension geometry and compliance.
  • How do I adjust ride height with these components? — Use the adjustment rings included in this set—they thread onto the shock body. Turning the ring down (towards the bottom of the shock) compresses the spring more and raises your chassis ride height. Turning it up (towards the top) reduces compression and lowers ride height. Mark one ridge with paint and count each rotation to track your adjustments precisely.
  • Will these shock caps fit my Traxxas RC model? — These components are specifically designed for GTX shock absorbers used in Traxxas 1/5 and 1/6 scale vehicles including X-Maxx and XRT platforms. Check your vehicle's manual or parts list to confirm you have GTX shocks before ordering.
  • Why is ride height important in RC suspension setup? — Ride height determines how much suspension travel you have available in both directions—up and down. If set too high, you lose down-travel and can't absorb dips. If too low, you lose up-travel for big hits and jumps. Proper ride height (typically mid-range travel) balances these needs and affects handling, cornering grip, and how the chassis weight transfers during acceleration and braking.
  • Can I adjust suspension without the adjustment rings? — Some Traxxas shocks use clip-on spacers above the spring to adjust height, whilst GTX shocks like these use threaded bodies with adjustment rings for infinite adjustment without needing spare parts. The rings included here give you precision that spacers cannot match.
  • What tools do I need to install these components? — You'll need a small screwdriver or hex key to install the 2.5x14mm fastening screws. The adjustment rings require only your fingers to turn—no tools needed for that aspect of tuning.
  • Is suspension tuning really necessary for casual RC bashing? — For serious performance and handling improvements, yes—even casual bashers will notice better control and consistency with properly set ride height and spring preload. However, Traxxas factory settings are a solid starting point, and these components give you the option to tune if you want to experiment.
  • What is damping and how does it relate to shock caps? — Damping is resistance to movement created by oil being forced through holes in a piston inside the shock absorber. It controls how quickly the suspension rebounds after a bump and prevents endless bouncing. Whilst shock caps themselves don't directly change damping (that's done through piston selection or oil viscosity), the proper fitment and sealing that quality shock caps provide ensures damping works as designed.
