Overview

The Traxxas Shock shafts, hardened steel, titanium nitride coated (Long) (2 pcs) TRX1664T are premium suspension components designed for RC enthusiasts looking to upgrade their Traxxas models with enhanced durability and performance. Whether you're a serious competitor running your RC car UK-wide or a weekend basher pushing your vehicle to the limits, these shock shafts offer a significant improvement over standard components. The long shock design is compatible with a wide range of Traxxas vehicles including the Ford Fiesta ST Rally, Mini Maxx, Slash HD, and Stampede 4X4 HD, making these shafts a versatile upgrade for multiple ready to run RC models in your collection.

What sets these shock shafts apart from standard alternatives is their advanced construction and premium coating technology. The hardened steel construction provides the foundation for a component that resists bending and maintains its structural integrity even under the most demanding driving conditions. This is particularly important for RC car enthusiasts who regularly compete or drive at high speeds, as bent shock shafts can compromise suspension geometry and handling characteristics, ultimately affecting your vehicle's performance on the track or trail.

The titanium nitride coating is where these shafts truly excel. This advanced surface treatment creates a super tough, wear-resistant layer that protects the underlying steel from scratching, corrosion and damage. Combined with a micro-polished finish, these shock shafts deliver noticeably smoother performance by reducing stiction—the friction that occurs when the shock piston moves within the shock body. For RC car UK buyers serious about maximising suspension performance, this reduction in stiction translates directly to more responsive handling, better traction, and improved overall vehicle dynamics.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — The shock shafts are manufactured from specially hardened, ground steel that provides exceptional strength and rigidity. This hardened steel formulation is engineered to prevent bending even under extreme driving forces, ensuring your suspension geometry remains consistent and your handling predictable lap after lap.
  • Titanium Nitride Coating — Each shaft features a super tough titanium nitride (TiN) coating that is applied through an advanced surface treatment process. This coating creates a durable barrier that resists scratching, abrasion and corrosion, significantly extending the operational life of the shafts compared to uncoated alternatives.
  • Micro-Polished Finish — The titanium nitride coating includes a micro-polished finish that serves two critical functions. Firstly, it reduces stiction by creating an exceptionally smooth surface that minimises friction between the piston and shock body. Secondly, the polish enhances the aesthetic appearance of your RC suspension components, giving them a professional, finished look.
  • Reduced Stiction for Smoother Performance — By combining the hardened steel base with the polished TiN coating, these shock shafts deliver noticeably reduced stiction throughout the compression and rebound cycles. This translates to more responsive suspension movement, improved energy transfer from the tyres to the chassis, and ultimately better vehicle handling characteristics in all driving conditions.
  • Long Shock Compatibility — These shafts are specifically designed to fit Traxxas long Ultra Shocks, making them compatible with a diverse range of Traxxas RC vehicles. Whether you drive a rally car, off-road buggy, short course truck or monster truck, long shock variants of these models can benefit from these premium upgrade shafts.
  • Extended Shaft Life — The scratch-resistant properties of the titanium nitride coating mean these shafts maintain their smooth, polished surface for significantly longer than standard shafts. This extended life reduces the frequency of replacements needed, delivering better value for your RC hobby investment.
  • Pair Pack Convenience — These shafts come as a pair, providing replacement or upgrade options for both the front and rear shocks on your RC vehicle in a single purchase. This pair pack format ensures consistent suspension performance across your entire vehicle.

Technical Performance

The engineering behind these shock shafts represents a careful balance between material science and precision manufacturing. The hardened steel base material has been specifically selected and processed to achieve maximum strength whilst maintaining the precise cylindrical geometry required for smooth piston movement within shock bodies. Ground to exact specifications, the steel provides a solid foundation that resists bending under the dynamic loads experienced during aggressive driving, jumps, and high-speed cornering. The titanium nitride coating adds a microscopically thin but incredibly hard layer to the shaft surface. Titanium nitride is significantly harder than the underlying steel, with a hardness rating that exceeds most common abrasive materials encountered during normal RC use. This means the shafts resist scratching from impacts, debris, and the normal wear that occurs when shock bodies compress and extend thousands of times during typical RC driving sessions. The micro-polishing process removes any surface imperfections and creates an exceptionally smooth finish with a near-mirror quality. This smoothness is crucial for suspension performance because it directly reduces the friction coefficient between the moving piston and the internal shock body surfaces. In technical terms, this reduction in stiction means the shock requires less force to compress and decompress, allowing it to respond more quickly and accurately to track surface variations. For RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand the highest performance from their suspension systems, this improved responsiveness translates to better traction during acceleration, more consistent braking performance, and superior cornering grip. Whether you're running these shafts on a brushless RC truck, competitive short course racer, or weekend basher, the measurable improvements in suspension action will be immediately noticeable. The combination of hardened steel strength and premium coating protection means these shafts represent a long-term investment in your vehicle's performance and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Traxxas RC models are compatible with these long shock shafts? — These shafts are designed to fit Traxxas long Ultra Shocks and are compatible with a comprehensive range of Traxxas vehicles including the Ford Fiesta ST Rally BL-2S and VXL models, Mini Maxx BL-2S in multiple colours, Slash HD XL-5 2WD short course trucks, and Stampede 4X4 HD VXL 4WD monster trucks. If you own any Traxxas ready to run RC car UK model with long-style shocks, these shafts should be compatible with your suspension setup.
  • What is the difference between titanium nitride coated shafts and standard steel shafts? — Standard steel shock shafts lack the protective coating and micro-polished surface of these TiN-coated versions. Without the coating, standard shafts are more prone to scratching, corrosion, and increased friction during operation. The titanium nitride coating on these shafts provides superior scratch resistance, extends operational life significantly, and reduces stiction for noticeably smoother suspension performance. For serious RC enthusiasts, the performance and durability upgrade justifies the investment.
  • How do these shafts improve suspension performance? — The micro-polished titanium nitride finish reduces stiction—the friction that occurs as the shock piston moves within the shock body. By reducing this friction, the suspension responds more quickly and accurately to bumps and track irregularities, improving traction, handling responsiveness, and overall vehicle control. You'll notice smoother suspension action and better energy transfer through your suspension system.
  • Are these shafts suitable for both competitive racing and casual bashing? — Yes, absolutely. Whether you're competing in local RC racing events or simply enjoying weekend bashing sessions with your RC car, these hardened steel shafts with TiN coating provide benefits across all driving styles. The enhanced durability means they'll withstand the impacts and stress of aggressive driving, whilst the improved suspension performance benefits competitive drivers and casual users alike.
  • How long do these shock shafts typically last? — The hardened steel construction and scratch-resistant titanium nitride coating significantly extend shaft life compared to standard uncoated alternatives. The exact lifespan depends on driving intensity and conditions, but these shafts are engineered for extended operational life. The coating actively resists wear, meaning you'll experience consistent performance for longer before replacement becomes necessary.
  • Do I need any tools or expertise to install these shafts? — Basic RC maintenance knowledge is helpful. You'll need to disassemble your shock bodies to replace the shafts. If you're unfamiliar with shock maintenance, we recommend consulting your Traxxas vehicle manual or seeking guidance from experienced RC enthusiasts. Many local RC clubs and hobby shops offer installation assistance if needed.
