Overview

The Traxxas Gear, 13-T Pinion (0.8 Metric Pitch, Compatible with 32-Pitch) (Fits 5mm Shaft) / Set Screw TRX5642 is an essential replacement component for RC enthusiasts and competitive drivers across the UK who demand reliability and precision from their electric RC cars. This pinion gear is a critical drivetrain component that directly impacts your vehicle's acceleration, top speed, and overall performance characteristics. Whether you're running a ready-to-run RC Monster Truck, maintaining a brushless RC competition machine, or simply keeping your collection in peak condition, having the correct pinion gear specification is absolutely vital to maintaining optimal performance on the track or in the bash pit.

Traxxas pinion gears are renowned throughout the RC hobby for their quality engineering, precision manufacturing, and compatibility with the widest range of Traxxas vehicles and aftermarket setups. This 13-tooth pinion represents a popular mid-range gearing option that delivers a balanced approach to acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for a variety of driving conditions and skill levels. If you're upgrading from a different tooth count or replacing a worn gear, the TRX5642 provides a direct path to improved drivetrain performance and longevity.

RC gearing is one of the most fundamental tuning variables available to RC car UK enthusiasts, and having a selection of pinion gears at various tooth counts allows you to dial in the perfect balance for your specific driving style, battery configuration, motor choice, and terrain. This 13-T pinion is an ideal addition to any serious RC driver's spare parts collection.

Key Features

  • 13-Tooth Configuration — This mid-range tooth count offers an excellent balance between acceleration and top speed, providing responsive handling without sacrificing top-end velocity. The 13-tooth specification is a popular choice for versatile driving in both competitive and recreational settings.
  • 0.8 Metric Pitch (Mod 0.8) — The metric pitch specification ensures compatibility with a wide range of modern Traxxas vehicles and spur gears. This standardised pitch measurement means you can confidently mesh this pinion with matching spur gears without worrying about compatibility issues or poor gear engagement.
  • Compatible with 32-Pitch Specifications — Despite using metric pitch measurement, this gear is cross-compatible with 32-pitch systems, providing flexibility for builders and upgraders who work with different gear standards across their RC collection.
  • 5mm Shaft Bore — The 5mm shaft diameter accommodates standard Traxxas motor shafts and transmission components, ensuring a secure fit and reliable power transfer from your brushless motor to the drivetrain. This size is one of the most common specifications found on modern RC cars and trucks.
  • Set Screw Retention System — The included set screw provides a positive mechanical lock to prevent the gear from slipping on the motor shaft during aggressive acceleration or high-speed running. This simple but effective retention method has proven reliable across thousands of RC vehicles worldwide.
  • Genuine Traxxas Engineering — As an official Traxxas OEM component, this pinion gear is manufactured to the same exacting standards as the factory-installed gears, ensuring perfect fitment and performance characteristics that match your vehicle's original specifications.
  • Direct Replacement Compatibility — This gear is designed as a plug-and-play replacement for existing Traxxas pinion gears with identical specifications, making installation straightforward for anyone with basic RC maintenance knowledge.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas TRX5642 pinion gear is engineered from hardened steel or composite material depending on your vehicle's specific drivetrain configuration, providing excellent durability and resistance to the constant meshing forces generated during acceleration and deceleration cycles. The 13-tooth configuration represents a versatile middle ground in the gearing spectrum — it's not so small that it creates excessive stress on motor windings during full-throttle acceleration, nor so large that it severely limits your top speed on open terrain. The 0.8 metric pitch measurement is the modern standard for Traxxas vehicles, and this specification has been refined through years of real-world testing in competitive racing environments and recreational bash scenarios. The 5mm shaft bore ensures compatibility with the vast majority of Traxxas brushless and brushed motors, making this pinion an incredibly versatile upgrade option for owners of multiple vehicles or those who frequently swap components between different chassis. When paired with an appropriately selected spur gear, this pinion gear creates gear ratios that deliver the perfect balance of acceleration response and top-end velocity for most driving conditions. The set screw engagement system is time-tested and proven, offering reliable retention even during the most demanding high-performance driving sessions. For UK RC car enthusiasts running brushless setups on LiPo batteries, this pinion gear will perform consistently across a wide range of battery voltages and motor specifications, adapting well to different power levels without performance degradation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need to replace it? — A pinion gear is the small gear mounted directly on your motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear to transfer power to your wheels. Over time, pinion gears can wear down, strip teeth, or become damaged from crashes and aggressive driving. Replacing a worn pinion gear restores smooth power delivery and eliminates the grinding noises and performance loss associated with damaged teeth. Different tooth counts also allow you to adjust your gearing ratio for different driving conditions or performance characteristics.
  • How do I know which pinion gear tooth count to choose? — Pinion gear selection depends on your specific driving style, terrain, and vehicle setup. Smaller tooth counts (like 11-T or 12-T) provide more acceleration but lower top speed, making them ideal for tight technical courses or bashers who prioritise control. Larger tooth counts (like 14-T or 15-T) sacrifice some acceleration for higher top-end velocity, suiting high-speed racing on open terrain. The 13-T configuration strikes a perfect balance for versatile driving across multiple conditions, making it an excellent choice for most RC drivers.
  • Is the TRX5642 compatible with my Traxxas vehicle? — This pinion gear is specifically designed for Traxxas vehicles with 5mm motor shafts and 0.8 metric pitch spur gears, including the Traxxas Stampede 4X4 HD VXL and numerous other modern Traxxas models. You should verify your vehicle's original pinion gear specifications before ordering to ensure compatibility, or contact our expert team at RC Model Shop who can confirm fitment for your specific model.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion gear? — Installation requires only basic RC maintenance tools: a hex key or Allen wrench to access the motor assembly, and a small screwdriver or hex bit to tighten the set screw. Most RC enthusiasts who perform their own maintenance will already have these tools in their workshop. Detailed installation instructions are typically included with the product or available from Traxxas support resources.
  • How long will a pinion gear last before needing replacement? — Pinion gear lifespan depends on driving intensity, maintenance practices, and the quality of the meshing spur gear. Aggressive racing and bashing will wear gears faster than casual recreational driving. Regular inspections of your drivetrain and prompt replacement of damaged gears will prevent secondary damage to your motor, spur gear, and transmission components.
  • Can I use this pinion gear with different spur gear sizes? — Yes, the beauty of modular gearing systems is that you can experiment with different pinion and spur gear combinations to achieve various final drive ratios. The TRX5642 pinion will mesh correctly with any Traxxas spur gear of matching 0.8 metric pitch specification, allowing you to fine-tune performance for your specific needs.
