Overview

The Traxxas 23-T Pinion Gear (48-pitch) Set TRX2423 is an essential performance tuning component for RC enthusiasts across the UK who want to optimise their Traxxas models. Whether you're running a brushless RC car, experimenting with different battery configurations, or simply looking to fine-tune your setup for specific driving conditions, this pinion gear offers a straightforward way to adjust your vehicle's performance characteristics. Pinion gears are critical drivetrain components that work in conjunction with your spur gear to determine your RC car's acceleration and top speed balance, making them one of the most cost-effective upgrades available for RC hobbyists in the UK.

Traxxas has built a reputation for manufacturing precision-engineered RC components, and this 23-tooth pinion gear is no exception. The 48-pitch specification means this gear is compatible with a wide range of Traxxas models, particularly those designed for 2S and 3S LiPo battery configurations. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor, a weekend basher enjoying your RC car at the local track, or someone new to the world of RC hobbies, having quality spare pinion gears in your toolkit is essential for maintaining and optimising your vehicle's performance.

This pinion gear set includes a convenient set screw, meaning you have everything you need to fit it directly to your motor shaft without requiring additional purchases. The 3 mm bore is precisely engineered to fit standard Traxxas motor shafts, ensuring a secure and reliable connection every time. RC Model Shop stocks this essential component because we understand that performance tuning through gearing options is a fundamental part of RC car ownership and enjoyment.

Key Features

  • 23-tooth pinion gear specification — This tooth count places the gear in the mid-range of Traxxas offerings, making it suitable for balanced performance across various driving conditions and battery configurations. Different tooth counts allow you to fine-tune your RC car's acceleration and top speed characteristics.
  • 48-pitch gear standard — The 48-pitch specification ensures compatibility with a wide range of Traxxas RC models, particularly those designed for 2S NIMH batteries or 3S LiPo battery packs. This pitch size is one of the most common across Traxxas's product range, making it an excellent choice for owners with multiple vehicles.
  • 3 mm bore diameter — The precise 3 mm bore is manufactured to exacting tolerances to fit standard Traxxas motor shafts perfectly, ensuring secure installation and reliable power transmission without slipping or wobbling during operation.
  • Includes set screw — Rather than requiring you to source additional hardware, this pinion gear set comes complete with an integrated set screw that locks the gear firmly onto your motor shaft, preventing accidental slippage during high-performance driving.
  • Performance tuning capability — By changing your pinion gear, you can adjust the gear ratio of your entire drivetrain, allowing you to optimise acceleration for tight technical courses or increase top speed for open-track running. This flexibility makes pinion gears one of the most valuable tuning tools for RC car UK enthusiasts.
  • Genuine Traxxas manufacturing — This component is manufactured by Traxxas to their exact specifications, ensuring quality and compatibility that aftermarket alternatives cannot always guarantee. You can trust that this gear will perform reliably in your Traxxas model.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 23-T Pinion Gear represents precision engineering in a small but critical component. The 48-pitch specification and 3 mm bore are engineered to exact tolerances, ensuring perfect meshing with your spur gear and smooth, efficient power delivery from your brushless motor to your wheels. This gear is particularly effective when running 2S NIMH batteries in series or 3S LiPo battery packs, making it ideal for mini-scale Traxxas models designed for these power sources. The hardened steel or precision-moulded construction ensures durability through repeated acceleration cycles, even during aggressive bashings or competitive racing. When installed correctly with the included set screw, this pinion gear delivers consistent performance without play or backlash, which is essential for maintaining precise handling characteristics. Users across the UK have reported that upgrading or adjusting their pinion gear selection allows them to unlock significant performance improvements, with feedback indicating the 23-tooth configuration works particularly well as a balanced option for general-purpose driving, whether in the garden, at the local club track, or during competitive events. The gear's engagement with your spur gear determines your final drive ratio, making this one of the most cost-effective tuning investments any RC car enthusiast can make.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a pinion gear do in an RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted on your motor shaft that meshes with a larger spur gear in your drivetrain. Together, these gears create a mechanical advantage that determines your vehicle's gear ratio, which in turn controls the balance between acceleration and top speed. By changing your pinion gear tooth count, you can optimise your RC car's performance for different driving conditions and battery types.
  • Will this 23-tooth pinion gear fit my Traxxas RC model? — The 48-pitch specification with 3 mm bore is compatible with various Traxxas models, particularly those designed for 2S NIMH or 3S LiPo battery configurations. However, it's essential to consult your specific model's owner's manual to confirm which pinion gear teeth counts are recommended for your vehicle. Different Traxxas models may have different compatible ranges, and using the incorrect tooth count could result in poor performance or drivetrain damage.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. While gearing might seem technical, changing a pinion gear is one of the simplest RC modifications you can make. The process requires only basic tools and takes just a few minutes. For beginners starting with RC cars in the UK, understanding how to swap pinion gears is an excellent introduction to vehicle tuning and customisation, giving you confidence to explore other performance upgrades.
  • What battery does this work with? — This pinion gear is particularly effective with 2S NIMH batteries (2.4V) or 3S LiPo batteries (11.1V). The tooth count and pitch were specifically designed to work optimally with these power sources. If you're unsure about your current battery configuration or considering upgrading, always refer to your model's manual for recommended gearing and battery combinations.
  • How do I know if I need a different pinion gear? — If your RC car feels too slow and lacks top speed, you might consider a pinion gear with fewer teeth (lower number) to increase top speed. Conversely, if acceleration feels sluggish but top speed isn't your priority, a pinion gear with more teeth (higher number) will increase acceleration. The 23-tooth configuration offers a balanced middle ground, making it an excellent starting point for general-purpose driving.
  • Do I need any tools to install this? — Installation requires only a hex key or Allen wrench to access your motor shaft and tighten the set screw. The process is straightforward and takes just minutes. If you're new to RC car maintenance, don't hesitate to ask for guidance from RC Model Shop staff who can walk you through the installation process.
