Overview

The Traxxas Oil, Differential (100K wt) (0.7 oz (20cc)) TRX5130 is an essential maintenance product for any RC car enthusiast in the UK looking to fine-tune their vehicle's performance. This premium differential oil is manufactured by Traxxas, the world's leading brand in RC vehicles, and offers serious hobbyists and bashers alike the ability to optimise limited slip action within their gear differential. Whether you're running a Traxxas Revo or adapting this oil to other compatible RC vehicles, this 20cc bottle of 100K weight oil represents a straightforward yet sophisticated approach to improving your RC car's handling characteristics.

Differential oil might seem like a small detail in the vast world of RC car maintenance, but it plays a surprisingly important role in how your vehicle behaves on different track conditions and terrain. By adjusting the viscosity of your differential oil, you gain direct control over the limited slip capability of your gear differential, which in turn affects how your RC car turns, accelerates out of corners, and maintains grip through various driving scenarios. This makes the TRX5130 an indispensable product for anyone serious about RC car performance, whether you're racing competitively or simply wanting to get the best handling from your ready to run RC car or custom build.

At RC Model Shop, we recognise that proper maintenance and optimisation is what separates weekend bashers from true RC enthusiasts. That's why we stock genuine Traxxas differential oils in various weights, allowing you to experiment and find the perfect setup for your unique driving style and local track conditions. The 100K weight is a popular choice for many applications, offering a balanced viscosity that works well in diverse conditions across the UK's varied terrain.

Key Features

  • 100K Weight Viscosity — This medium viscosity oil is designed to provide controlled limited slip action in your differential, giving you the flexibility to adjust your RC car's turning performance without replacing major components. The 100K rating is versatile enough for various track and driving conditions, making it an excellent all-around choice.
  • Genuine Traxxas Product — Manufactured by Traxxas, the authorised leader in RC vehicle technology, you can be confident that this oil meets strict quality standards and is formulated specifically for Traxxas differentials and compatible systems. Using genuine products ensures optimal performance and longevity.
  • Easy Performance Tuning — Rather than investing in expensive differential upgrades or modifications, simply changing your differential oil viscosity allows you to experiment with different limited slip characteristics. Higher viscosity oils increase slip resistance, whilst lower viscosity oils reduce it, giving you precise control over your vehicle's handling.
  • 20cc Bottle Size — The 0.7 oz (20cc) bottle is the ideal size for a single differential service or multiple applications across several RC vehicles. This volume is convenient for storage and ensures you're not over-purchasing for casual users.
  • Compatible with Multiple Vehicles — Whilst originally developed for the Traxxas Revo, this differential oil can be used in other Traxxas vehicles and compatible RC cars that accept standard differential oil. This versatility makes it a smart choice for RC enthusiasts with multiple vehicles in their collection.
  • Performance Enhancement for Track Conditions — By understanding how to adjust your differential oil viscosity, you can optimise your RC car's exit speed from corners and overall turning performance, giving you a competitive edge whether you're racing or bashering at your local club track.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas differential oil system works on a fundamentally simple yet effective principle: the viscosity (thickness) of the oil in your differential determines how easily the internal gears can slip relative to each other. The 100K weight rating sits in the middle of Traxxas's range, offering a balanced approach that works across various track conditions commonly encountered by RC enthusiasts across the UK. When you pour this oil into your differential, it coats the internal gears and controls the amount of torque that can be transferred between the left and right wheels during cornering. This is crucial because during a turn, the inside wheel needs to rotate slower than the outside wheel, and the differential oil's viscosity directly controls how much this speed difference is allowed. Thicker oils (higher K weights) resist this slipping action more, resulting in tighter, more aggressive turning characteristics but potentially causing understeer if set too high. Conversely, thinner oils allow more slip, which can improve turning radius but may cause oversteer in high-speed corners. The 100K weight provides a neutral starting point that many drivers find suits their driving style without requiring extreme setup modifications. The engineering behind Traxxas's differential oil formulation ensures consistent performance across temperature ranges that you'll typically experience during RC racing sessions in the UK's temperate climate. Whether you're running your brushless RC car on a indoor carpet track or bashing through outdoor terrain, this oil maintains its performance characteristics, ensuring your differential behaves predictably throughout your driving session. For those new to differential tuning, the TRX5130 represents an affordable entry point into understanding how small changes in setup can yield noticeable improvements in handling and lap times.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is differential oil and why do I need it for my RC car? — Differential oil is a specially formulated lubricant that fills the differential gearbox in your RC vehicle. It serves two critical purposes: it lubricates the gears to reduce friction and wear, and it controls the limited slip action between the left and right wheels during cornering. By adjusting the viscosity (weight) of the differential oil, you can fine-tune how your RC car handles through turns, making it an essential tuning tool for anyone serious about RC car performance.
  • What does 100K weight mean? — The K weight rating indicates the viscosity or thickness of the oil. 100K is a mid-range viscosity in Traxxas's differential oil lineup. Higher K numbers (like 200K or 300K) are thicker and resist slipping more, creating tighter turning characteristics. Lower K numbers (like 50K) are thinner and allow more slip, improving turning radius. The 100K weight is versatile and works well as a baseline for most driving styles and conditions across UK RC clubs and tracks.
  • Can I use this oil in vehicles other than the Traxxas Revo? — Yes, whilst this oil was originally formulated for the Traxxas Revo, it can be used in other Traxxas vehicles and some compatible RC cars that accept standard differential oil. Always check your vehicle's manual to confirm compatibility before using any maintenance product not originally packaged for your specific model.
  • How often should I change my differential oil? — Differential oil should be serviced regularly, particularly if you use your RC car frequently. Many enthusiasts change their differential oil every few months of regular use, or more frequently if they race competitively. If you notice your differential becoming noisier, grinding, or your handling characteristics changing unexpectedly, it's time for a service. The 20cc bottle size from the TRX5130 is perfect for a single differential refill.
  • How do I know what weight differential oil to use? — The best weight depends on your specific vehicle, track conditions, and driving style. Many drivers start with a mid-range weight like this 100K option and then experiment. If your RC car understeers (pushes straight through corners), try a thinner oil. If it oversteers (tail slides too much), try a thicker oil. Keeping several weights on hand allows you to experiment and find your optimal setup.
  • Is differential oil maintenance difficult? — Changing differential oil is one of the most straightforward maintenance tasks you can perform on an RC car. Most differentials are accessible by removing a few screws on the differential cover. Drain the old oil, refill with fresh oil to the proper level (usually indicated by a fill line or marked in your manual), and reassemble. No special tools or expertise required, making this an ideal project for RC hobbyists of all skill levels.
  • What is the difference between 50K, 100K, 200K and other weights? — Each weight offers different slip characteristics. Thinner weights (50K, 75K) allow more wheel slip during turns, improving cornering speed but potentially causing oversteer. Heavier weights (200K, 300K, 500K) resist slip more, creating tighter turns but potentially causing understeer. The 100K weight sits in the middle, making it ideal for learning the relationship between viscosity and handling. Having multiple weights available lets you dial in the perfect balance for your driving style and local conditions.
