Overview

The ARRMA 14T 0.8Mod Safe-D5 Pinion Gear is an essential replacement and upgrade component for RC car enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and precision in their drivetrain. This tough steel pinion gear represents the perfect addition to carry in your RC tool box, whether you're a seasoned basher, competitive racer, or weekend hobbyist exploring the world of RC cars UK. Designed with the exact specifications needed for ARRMA vehicles and compatible motor shafts, this pinion gear delivers the durability and performance required for extreme RC conditions where reliability cannot be compromised.

Built from strong and durable steel, the 14T 0.8 Module Safe-D pinion gear combines traditional engineering excellence with modern safety features that protect your investment and ensure uninterrupted performance. The precision manufacturing behind this component means smooth operation and consistent engagement with your spur gear, translating to better acceleration, more responsive handling, and reduced drivetrain noise. For anyone running brushless RC cars or upgrading their current setup, having quality pinion gears in your spares collection is not just sensible—it's essential insurance against unexpected downtime during races or casual play sessions.

This pinion gear stands out in the competitive RC market through its innovative Safe-D design, which addresses one of the most frustrating common issues in RC driving: the dreaded set-screw back-out that causes loss of drive and brakes mid-run. ARRMA's engineering team has solved this problem with a cleverly designed D-shaped hole that matches your motor shaft profile perfectly, keeping your drivetrain engaged even if fasteners begin to loosen from vibration during intense driving.

Key Features

  • Strong and durable steel construction — Manufactured from high-quality steel, this pinion gear withstands the extreme forces and vibrations encountered during aggressive RC driving, ensuring long-lasting performance in challenging conditions where plastic alternatives would fail or wear prematurely.
  • Precision manufactured wide tooth profile — The carefully engineered tooth geometry delivers smooth operation and reliable engagement with your spur gear, reducing noise, minimising backlash, and extending the lifespan of both the pinion and spur components in your drivetrain.
  • Safe-D shaped bore for motor shaft — This innovative D-shaped hole matches your 5mm motor shaft profile precisely, preventing the catastrophic loss of drive and brakes that occurs when traditional round set-screws back out from vibration, keeping your RC car running even if fastening hardware loosens.
  • 5mm motor shaft compatibility — Engineered specifically to suit 5mm diameter motor shafts, this pinion gear fits ARRMA vehicles and other RC cars using this industry-standard motor size, ensuring proper fitment and performance.
  • Precision manufactured threaded set-screw hole — The carefully machined M4 x 4mm set-screw hole receives its supplied fastener with perfect thread engagement, guaranteeing secure, repeatable installation and consistent performance across multiple installation and removal cycles.
  • E-clip retention system included — The supplied 3.2mm E-clip provides an additional mechanical retention method for your motor shaft pinion, adding a second layer of safety that prevents accidental separation of the gear during operation.

Technical Performance

The ARRMA 14T 0.8Mod Safe-D5 Pinion Gear represents engineered precision in RC drivetrain components. With 14 teeth and a 0.8 Module pitch specification, this pinion gear delivers a specific gear ratio that balances acceleration and top-end speed for typical brushless RC car applications. The 0.8 Module measurement defines the tooth size and spacing, ensuring perfect meshing compatibility with ARRMA spur gears specified for this pitch standard. The Safe-D5 bore designation indicates the D-shaped hole design matched to 5mm motor shafts, a critical safety feature that distinguishes ARRMA's engineering approach from basic pinion gears that rely solely on set-screw friction. The gear is manufactured from steel rather than plastic or brass, providing superior strength and durability compared to budget alternatives. This material choice is particularly important for high-power brushless RC cars where impact loads, rapid acceleration, and sustained speed place tremendous stress on drivetrain components. The precision manufacturing process ensures concentricity and tooth profile accuracy, critical factors that determine noise levels, efficiency, and longevity. Whether you're running a 3S or 4S LiPo powered RC buggy, monster truck, or short course truck, this pinion gear will handle the demands placed upon it. The inclusion of the M4 x 4mm set-screw and 3.2mm E-clip demonstrates ARRMA's commitment to complete, ready-to-install solutions that don't require you to hunt down compatible fasteners elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does the Safe-D design mean and why is it better than standard pinion gears? — The Safe-D design features a D-shaped bore that matches your 5mm motor shaft profile, rather than a simple round hole. This means if your set-screw begins to back out due to vibration during intense RC driving, the D-shaped engagement prevents complete loss of drive and braking power. With standard round pinion gears, a loosening set-screw means you lose all drivetrain engagement instantly. The Safe-D design is particularly valuable when racing or bashing where vibration is constant and set-screw retention can be challenging.
  • What tooth count should I choose for my RC car? — Pinion gear tooth count significantly affects your vehicle's performance characteristics. Lower tooth counts (like this 14T) provide more acceleration but lower top speed, making them ideal for tight, technical courses or when you prioritise quick acceleration. Higher tooth counts provide higher top speeds but less initial acceleration. The 14T specification is a popular middle-ground choice for versatile RC driving across varied terrain.
  • Is this compatible with my ARRMA RC vehicle? — This pinion gear is designed for ARRMA vehicles and any RC cars using 5mm motor shafts with 0.8 Module spur gears. Check your vehicle's specifications to confirm your motor has a 5mm shaft diameter and that your existing spur gear uses 0.8 Module pitch. If you're unsure, contact our expert team at RC Model Shop who can verify compatibility with your specific model.
  • What is 0.8 Module and why does it matter? — Module is a metric measurement standard that defines pinion and spur gear tooth size and spacing. A 0.8 Module pinion gear must mesh with a 0.8 Module spur gear; mixing different modules results in poor engagement, noise, and rapid wear. The module specification ensures your pinion and spur gears work together smoothly and efficiently. This is one of the most important specifications to verify when purchasing replacement gears.
  • Do I need to use the supplied E-clip? — The supplied 3.2mm E-clip provides additional mechanical retention for your pinion gear on the motor shaft. Many RC enthusiasts use both the set-screw and E-clip for maximum security, especially on high-powered brushless vehicles where drivetrain forces are substantial. Using the E-clip alongside the set-screw adds redundancy and peace of mind during competitive racing.
  • Why is steel construction important for pinion gears? — Steel pinion gears offer superior strength and durability compared to plastic or brass alternatives, particularly important for brushless RC vehicles where power and torque are significantly higher than brushed equivalents. Steel resists deformation from impact loads and sustained acceleration, maintains tooth profile integrity over extended use, and provides better heat dissipation than plastic materials. For serious RC driving, steel pinion gears are the professional choice.
