Key Features
- 12-Pole Low Cog Outrunner Design — The 12-pole configuration with 14-magnet rotor minimises cogging torque, which means the motor delivers smooth, consistent power at low speeds. This is absolutely critical for crawling applications where smooth throttle control can mean the difference between successfully navigating an obstacle and getting stuck. The low-cog design ensures that your throttle input translates directly into smooth motor response without the jolting or hesitation that can occur with poorly designed motors.
- CNC Machined Aluminium Housing — The precision-engineered aluminium housing is both lightweight and incredibly durable. CNC machining ensures tolerances are exact, which means all internal components work together perfectly. This construction method is used in professional-grade motors because it delivers superior performance and longevity compared to cast or stamped alternatives.
- High-Purity Insulated Copper Windings — The motor uses only high-purity copper for its windings, which conduct electricity more efficiently than lower-grade copper. Full insulation protects the windings from moisture, dirt, and electrical shorts. This combination ensures maximum efficiency and a longer service life, particularly important for those investing in quality RC equipment.
- High-Quality Alloy Steel 3.175mm Output Shaft — The output shaft is manufactured from premium alloy steel, which provides exceptional strength whilst remaining lightweight. The 3.175mm diameter is the standard for professional 1/10 scale RC applications, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of gearboxes, slipper clutches, and drivetrain components available in the UK RC market.
- Precision Ball Bearings — Premium bearings reduce friction and ensure smooth rotation even under heavy load. This means better efficiency, cooler running temperatures, and ultimately longer motor life. Quality bearings are essential for serious RC crawling where reliability cannot be compromised.
- Pre-installed 3.5mm Gold-Plated Bullet Connectors — The gold-plated connectors resist corrosion and oxidation, ensuring consistent electrical contact. Pre-installation means you can get your motor up and running faster, without needing to solder connections yourself. Gold plating is essential for reliability in outdoor RC applications where moisture and salt air can degrade standard connectors.
- 2S-4S LiPo Compatibility — This motor works seamlessly with 2S, 3S, and 4S LiPo battery packs, giving you tremendous flexibility in your power setup. Whether you prefer lightweight 2S packs for reduced weight and simpler electronics, or powerful 4S packs for maximum performance, this motor can handle it all.
- Specifically Engineered for 1/10 Scale Crawlers and Scalers — Unlike generic brushless motors, this Spektrum Firma is purpose-built for rock crawling applications. The entire motor design, from the KV rating to the mechanical characteristics, is optimised for the unique demands of technical crawling where precision and control trump raw speed.
Technical Performance
The Spektrum Firma 3530-1700Kv 12-Pole Outrunner Brushless Motor represents the pinnacle of brushless motor design for serious RC crawlers. The 1700Kv rating means that for every volt applied to the motor, it will rotate 1700 revolutions per minute under no load. This relatively conservative KV rating is deliberately chosen for crawling applications where low-end torque and controllability are paramount. When paired with the included Firma 80A Smart ESC, which features a 32-bit ARM M4 processor and support for both sensored and sensorless operation, you get a system that delivers ultra-smooth control across the entire throttle range. The motor's 12-pole configuration with 14 magnets creates a smooth power curve that eliminates the stepped acceleration associated with lower pole-count motors, making it easier to modulate speed precisely when navigating rocks, roots, and challenging terrain.
Build quality throughout the motor is exceptional. The CNC machined aluminium housing isn't just for show — it ensures that every internal component is positioned with precision tolerances, allowing the rotor to spin with minimal runout and maximum efficiency. The high-purity copper windings minimise electrical resistance, which means more of your battery's energy is converted into useful mechanical work rather than being wasted as heat. The precision ball bearings keep friction to an absolute minimum, which is crucial because friction directly reduces efficiency and drains battery capacity. The high-quality alloy steel 3.175mm (1/8 inch) output shaft is strong enough to handle the intense stresses of rock crawling, including sudden stops, impacts, and the extreme torque loads that come with technical driving. This is a motor built to last, year after year, even with regular use in demanding off-road conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Spektrum Firma 1700Kv motor suitable for beginners in RC crawling? — Yes, absolutely. The 1700Kv rating is specifically designed for crawler applications where smooth, low-speed control is essential. Beginners will find this motor forgiving and easy to control thanks to its intelligent 12-pole design and the included Firma 80A Smart ESC which offers progressive power delivery. The sensored operation provides additional smoothness that newer drivers will appreciate when learning proper crawling technique.
- What battery does the Firma 3530-1700Kv motor require? — This motor is compatible with 2S, 3S, and 4S LiPo battery packs. A 2S LiPo (7.4V) offers lightweight, simple operation; a 3S LiPo (11.1V) provides the popular middle ground; and a 4S LiPo (14.8V) delivers maximum performance. The choice depends on your specific crawler chassis and personal preference. The included Firma 80A ESC supports all three voltage options and can operate with or without motor sensors.
- What is the difference between the 1700Kv and other Spektrum Firma motor options? — The KV rating determines the speed-to-torque characteristic of the motor. The 1700Kv is specifically calibrated for crawler and scaler applications where low-speed control and high torque at reduced rpm are essential. Higher KV motors (like the 2100Kv or 2400Kv variants) are designed for different applications and would be too twitchy for precision crawling. The 1700Kv is the sweet spot for technical rock crawling in 1/10 scale.
- Can I use this motor with non-Spektrum ESCs and transmitters? — The motor itself will work with any compatible ESC rated for brushless outrunner motors. However, you would lose the advanced Smart telemetry features that make the Spektrum system special. The included Firma 80A Smart ESC is specifically matched to this motor for optimal performance, and we recommend using Spektrum transmitters to take full advantage of drag brake control and real-time telemetry feedback.
- Is the Firma 80A ESC waterproof? — Yes, the Firma 80A Smart ESC is waterproof, though Spektrum recommends reviewing the instruction manual for specific details on sealing methods. This waterproof capability is crucial for crawler enthusiasts who work in wet conditions, river beds, and other challenging terrains where water submersion is possible.
- How does sensored operation improve performance? — The motor includes sensor capability that allows the ESC to detect rotor position more precisely. This enables smoother commutation, particularly at very low speeds where sensorless operation can become unpredictable. The Firma 80A ESC supports both sensored and sensorless operation, giving you flexibility, though sensored mode is generally preferred for crawling where ultra-smooth control is paramount.
- What makes this motor better than brushed alternatives? — Brushless motors like the Firma 3530-1700Kv offer numerous advantages over traditional brushed motors: they run cooler, require virtually no maintenance, deliver consistent power throughout the battery's discharge curve, and provide superior efficiency.
