The Hobbywing EzRun MAX8 G2S stands as a masterpiece of electrical engineering for 1/8th scale brushless RC vehicles. Delivering a continuous current rating of 160A with peak capability reaching an astounding 1050A, this speed controller provides the electrical foundation required for truly competitive performance. The unit accepts 3-6S LiPo batteries (11.1V to 22.2V), making it compatible with both 4S (14.8V) and 6S (22.2V) configurations depending on your motor selection and performance goals. With 4S LiPo, maximum motor KV should not exceed 3000, whilst 6S operation safely accommodates motors up to 2400KV, particularly 4278-size motors that deliver exceptional power output.
The physical construction weighs just 192 grams and measures 60mm × 48mm × 40.5mm, featuring a rugged aluminium housing with integrated heatsink radiator that efficiently dissipates the tremendous heat generated during high-current operation. Input connectivity utilises robust XT90 connectors with 10AWG wiring (150mm and 200mm configurations included), whilst motor output employs 6.5mm bullet connectors capable of handling the extreme current levels safely. The sensored motor input features the new IP67-rated waterproof connector, though standard sensored motor adaptor cables are supported for universal compatibility with non-Hobbywing sensor systems.
Performance in real-world conditions is extraordinary. The sensored brushless mode delivers aggressive launch characteristics and genuine high-speed stability on straights, whilst the flexible sensorless mode support ensures compatibility with virtually any brushless motor architecture. The frameless fan cooling system with patented design actively manages thermal conditions, maintaining optimal operating temperatures even during continuous high-stress operation. Programmable parameters include turbo timing (0-32 degrees), adjustable fan temperature thresholds, throttle response curves, and numerous safety functions. The switch-mode BEC efficiency means minimal heat generation from servo powering, and the three 680µF capacitors provide unprecedented power stability for aggressive acceleration and rapid throttle modulation. For UK racing circuits and off-road courses, the IP67 environmental protection rating ensures reliable operation in wet, muddy, and sandy conditions that would compromise lesser speed controllers.

Whilst the extreme power output and advanced features appeal to serious competitors and experienced bashers, the smooth linear throttle response and intuitive app-based programming make it accessible to enthusiasts stepping up from brushed motors or entry-level brushless systems. The intelligent fan management and thermal protection prevent overheating even during learning sessions, and the programmable parameters allow you to reduce power delivery for novice drivers before progressing to full performance.
- What is the difference between the MAX8 G2S and the standard MAX8 G2? — The G2S variant represents the latest evolution, featuring optimised hardware design and intelligent freewheeling technology that further improve stability and reliability compared to the G2. The built-in Bluetooth connectivity is also a key G2S enhancement, eliminating the need to purchase a separate programming module. Both share the same phenomenal 160A/1050A current rating and thermal management capabilities, but the G2S offers superior intelligent fan control and modern app-based programming convenience.
- What LiPo battery configuration should I use with the MAX8 G2S? — The ESC accepts 3-6S LiPo batteries. Most users choose either 4S (14.8V) or 6S (22.2V) configurations depending on motor selection. With 4S systems, pair with motors rated 3000KV or lower. With 6S systems, select motors rated 2400KV or lower, with 4278-size motors being the perfect match. For your first build, a quality 4S LiPo around 5000-8000mAh provides excellent run times and manageable power output whilst you develop your driving skills.
- Does this ESC work with motors from brands other than Hobbywing? — Yes, the MAX8 G2S is fully compatible with sensored and sensorless brushless motors from any manufacturer. Hobbywing motors benefit from optimised thermal monitoring, but standard sensored motors simply require an adaptor cable for the new sensor connector. Many UK RC racers successfully pair this ESC with other premium motor brands, and the extreme power capacity accommodates virtually any quality brushless motor in the 1/8th scale range.
- How does the IP67 waterproof rating work in practice? — The comprehensive sealing protects the ESC from splashing, water spray, mud, and dust encountered during normal RC operation in wet UK weather, on muddy tracks, or in sandy environments. However, IP67 protection is not permanent and degrades with age and wear. You should avoid prolonged submersion or extended water soaking, which could compromise seals and cause internal damage. For splash-proof operation during normal conditions, the protection is excellent and reliable.
- Can I programme the MAX8 G2S without purchasing additional equipment? — Absolutely. The built-in Bluetooth module connects directly to the HW LINK app on your iPhone or Android smartphone, allowing you to adjust all parameters, view real-time data, and update firmware wirelessly. For advanced programmers seeking additional functionality, the optional Hobbywing OTA Programmer (sold separately) provides extended wireless capabilities, but the app offers complete control for 99% of users and dramatically simplifies setup compared to traditional button programming.
- What is the effective Bluetooth range for smartphone control? — The Bluetooth system is effective within approximately 5 metres in open-field conditions. This is more than sufficient for bench testing, parameter adjustment, and data monitoring, though racing obviously requires moving beyond this range once your vehicle is running. Real-time data viewing requires the 5-metre proximity, but once programmed, the ESC operates independently with full performance capability across any distance.
- Is the fan noise intrusive, and when does it run? — The intelligent fan start-stop function means the fan only activates once the ESC reaches a preset temperature threshold, typically during extended high-current operation or in hot ambient conditions. During cool running or initial acceleration bursts, the fan remains silent, keeping noise pollution minimal. When active, the noise level is moderate and far less intrusive than the motor itself, so track-side observers rarely notice the cooling fan.
- What warranty and support does Hobbywing provide in the UK? — All Hobbywing products sold through authorised UK retailers like RC Model Shop come with manufacturer support and warranty coverage. Hobbywing maintains excellent customer service through UK distribution channels, with readily available replacement parts, documentation, and firmware updates. The company's reputation for reliability means you're investing in a speed controller built to last through years of intensive use.
