More info about RJ Gritter
"The son of a test pilot dad and a flight instructor mom, RJ has been in the cockpit his entire life. Growing up around the airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, he started flying before he was tall enough to see over the instrument panel! He soloed on his 16th birthday and got his private pilot license on his 17th.
RJ developed a passion for aerobatics through radio-control (RC) flying. He started competing in RC aerobatics at age 16 in national and international events, representing the US in indoor precision and freestyle aerobatic championships. RC flying gave him a strong background for "full-scale" aerobatic flying.
RJ earned his bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University. After graduation, he moved to northern Virginia, just down the street from the Bealeton Flying Circus! He got his Decathlon at the end of 2015 and has since flown over 800 hours in the airplane, flying his first airshow in 2016. Since then, he's flown hundreds of performances and has loved every minute of it!"
Skill Level 2 – Some Experience Required
Skill Level 2 – Next Step After a Trainer aircraft, like this one, are suitable for RC pilots who have successfully learned to fly a trainer model and those with the skills to assemble, set up, and fly similar class models. Although this is one of the best-handling and easiest-to-fly Decathlon models, it's not a suitable first-ever RC aircraft for new pilots. You should have the experience and skills necessary to successfully fly a trainer model like the HobbyZone AeroScout 1.1m and Carbon Cub 1.3m, or models like the E-flite T-28 Trojan 1.1m, Valiant 1.3m, Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m and other similar class models before attempting to fly the Decathlon RJG 1.2m.
Are you new to flying RC (Radio Controlled) aircraft? If you are, the Decathlon is not a suitable first-ever RC model, and we recommend learning to fly with one of our purpose-built trainer aircraft, such as the HobbyZone® Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m (www.horizonhobby.cc/CarbonCubS2RTF). It's equipped with exclusive and innovative SAFE technology that makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) Basic version includes nearly everything needed to fly (except for a compatible LiPo battery and charger that are sold separately, or together in a money-saving Powerstage bundle) and is a perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot. You can even use the DXS transmitter and the 3S 2200mAh battery used for the Carbon Cub to fly the Decathlon RJG 1.2m BNF Basic version after you learn to fly RC!

Bind-N-Fly Completion Level AdvantageAlready own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly!
This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X (Artificial Stabilization-3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence. The result is a heightened sense of stability and precision that makes you feel like you're flying a much larger, expertly tuned aircraft.
If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No programming is required. Simply change up the binding sequence as directed in the manual.
With SAFE Select enabled, you get:
Pitch and Bank Angle Limits
- These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.
Automatic Self-Leveling
- The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the centre position. It's also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs/launches and landings.
Easy Switch Assignment-No Complex Programming Required
- The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any complex programming and takes just a few seconds.
If you don't want to enable the SAFE Select features, just bind the receiver normally and it will function like a standard AS3X receiver.

It is classified as Skill Level 2 and is designed for pilots who have successfully learned to fly a trainer aircraft and possess the experience and skills necessary to assemble, set up and fly similar class models. New RC pilots should start with purpose-built trainers like the HobbyZone Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m, which features SAFE technology specifically designed to help new pilots learn successfully. However, if you already own a Spektrum transmitter and have flying experience with models like the HobbyZone AeroScout 1.1m, E-flite T-28 Trojan 1.1m, or similar trainers, the Decathlon RJG 1.2m makes an excellent next step into aerobatic flying.
- What battery does the Decathlon RJG 1.2m require? — The aircraft is compatible with both 3S and 4S LiPo batteries without requiring any modifications. A 3S 11.1V 2200mAh battery delivers excellent sport flying performance, whilst a 4S 14.8V 2200–3200mAh battery provides more speed and unlimited vertical aerobatic capability. Choose based on the type of flying you prefer: 3S for smooth sport flying and basic aerobatics, or 4S for maximum performance and aggressive inverted flying. The aircraft accepts any LiPo in the 2200–3200mAh capacity range with EC3 or IC3 connectors.
- Can I use my existing Spektrum transmitter with this model? — Yes, if you already own a full-range 4–5+ channel Spektrum DSMX or DSM2 compatible transmitter, you can use it with the Decathlon RJG 1.2m. The model comes as BNF (Bind-N-Fly) Basic, meaning the receiver is pre-installed; you simply bind it to your transmitter following the included manual instructions. Spektrum recommends the DXS transmitter for pilots who also own other E-flite trainers like the Carbon Cub or HobbyZone models, as you can use the same radio across multiple aircraft. If you do not own a compatible transmitter, you will need to purchase one separately.
- How long does assembly take? — The Decathlon RJG 1.2m uses bolt-together construction and requires no adhesive, allowing you to have it ready to fly in less than one hour. The one-piece wing attaches using thumbscrews and hands-free connections, the struts snap into place without tools, and all electronics come pre-installed. This rapid assembly time means you can realistically fly the same day you receive the aircraft.
- What is the difference between AS3X and SAFE Select? — AS3X (Artificial Stabilisation–3-aXis) is always active and works continuously behind the scenes to stabilise the aircraft by smoothing out wind and turbulence effects, making the aeroplane feel locked-in and much larger than it actually is. SAFE Select is an optional-use feature that adds pitch and bank angle envelope limits plus automatic self-levelling; you can toggle it on and off using a switch on your transmitter. If you want maximum stability assistance when learning new manoeuvres, enable SAFE Select. If you prefer full aerobatic freedom once you are comfortable, simply bind the receiver normally and only AS3X will be active. Both technologies work through the AR631 receiver with no programming required.
- Does this aircraft have inverted fuel and oil systems like the full-scale Decathlon? — No, this is an electric-powered RC model, so it does not feature fuel or oil systems. However, the airframe design is based on the full-scale Decathlon, which is famous for its inverted fuel and oil systems and nearly symmetrical wing that allow it to perform outside and inverted manoeuvres with ease. This electric model captures that aerobatic capability through its precisely tuned brushless power system, digital servo control, and aerodynamic design, allowing you to perform smooth inverted flying and aggressive aerobatic manoeuvres.
- What is RJ Gritter's background and why is this model named after him? — RJ Gritter is a nearly lifelong RC and full-scale pilot who started competing in RC aerobatics at age 16 in both national and international events, representing the USA in indoor precision and freestyle aerobatic championships. He holds a degree in Aerospace Engineering and has flown over 800 hours in his full-scale Decathlon, performing hundreds of airshow performances since 2016. He was directly involved in the development of this RC model, which features his distinctive paint scheme and benefits from his expertise in both RC and full-scale aerobatic flying. This model is a tribute to his passion and skill.
- Can I reverse the motor for special ground handling? — Yes, the Decathlon RJG 1.2m includes optional-use motor/thrust reversing capability, which allows for special ground handling techniques and other advanced flying scenarios. This feature is configured through the receiver and transmitter and opens up unique flying possibilities not available on standard aerobatic models.
- How much flight time can I expect? — Whilst specific flight time figures are not provided in the specifications, the combination of a specially tuned brushless motor with either 3S or 4S LiPo batteries typically delivers 15–25 minutes of flight time depending on your flying style. Sport flying and smooth aerobatics will yield longer flight times, whilst aggressive manoeuvres and maximum performance flying will reduce duration. Carrying multiple batteries allows you to extend your flying session throughout the day.
- What makes the Spektrum Avian Smart Lite ESC special? — The Spektrum Avian 45-amp Smart Lite ESC is not merely a power controller; it actively monitors your power system and provides real-time telemetry data including motor RPM, battery voltage, current draw and other vital information. This data is transmitted wirelessly to your transmitter if it is equipped with AirWare technology (such as the DX6e, DX8e, DX6 G2/3, DX8 G2, DX9, NX6–20, iX12–20 and others), allowing you to monitor performance throughout every flight. This telemetry is invaluable for optimising battery selection, understanding motor load and ensuring you return to base with sufficient battery capacity remaining.
