Key Features

  • Proven Capra™ Tube Chassis Design — The UTB18 Capra reproduces the tube frame architecture of the legendary 1/10 scale Capra, delivering authentic trail buggy proportions and optimum clearance over obstacles. This chassis design is recognised for both realistic scale appearance and genuine crawling capability, making it the foundation of Axial's most accomplished rock crawler platform.
  • Portal Axles for Maximized Ground Clearance — Portal axles increase ground clearance at the differential, a crucial feature that allows the crawler to maintain traction whilst traversing rocky, uneven terrain. This engineering detail, borrowed directly from full-scale rock crawling vehicles, is what separates capable crawlers from ordinary toy vehicles.
  • 4-Link Suspension Geometry for Optimal Crawling — The suspension geometry has been precisely tuned to provide the articulation and control needed for serious trail performance. This suspension type allows all four wheels to maintain contact with challenging terrain, essential for climbing loose rocks and navigating deep ruts.
  • Stainless Steel Lower Links and Metal Axles with Front Universals — These durable, machined components ensure smooth action and reliable performance across extended crawling sessions. The universals provide 45 degrees of steering angle for efficient maneuvering in tight trail situations, whilst the metal construction resists bending and fatigue.
  • Axle-Mounted 1/10 Scale Servo for Better Steering Control — Rather than mounting the servo in the chassis, this low-profile design contributes to a lower centre of gravity and allows superior steering control during full articulation. This is the setup favoured by competition crawlers because it prevents weight transfer and improves predictable handling on extreme angles.
  • Officially Licensed Nitto Trail Grappler M/T Tyres on Raceline Monster Wheels — These tyres are engineered to provide genuine grip on dirt, rocks, and all off-road surfaces whilst maintaining authentic scale appearance. The composite Raceline wheels complete the realistic off-road look that makes the UTB18 Capra stand out in any RC collection.
  • LED Headlights, Light Bar, and Rock Lights — Beyond pure aesthetics, these working LED lights enable nocturnal crawling and add immersive realism to the trail experience. The light bar and forward-facing rock lights illuminate terrain ahead, extending your crawling adventures into evening hours.
  • Realistic Interior with Helmeted Driver and Passenger Figures — The attention to detail inside the body panels, combined with licensed livery graphics, transforms the UTB18 Capra from a toy into a genuine scale model. These details are what collectors and enthusiasts appreciate, elevating the vehicle beyond functional performance.
  • Fully Ready-to-Run with High-Quality Electronics — The Spektrum SLT2 2.4GHz radio system, 25A brushed ESC, Dynamite Tazer 37T motor, and 7Kg servo are all pre-installed, tested, and ready for immediate use. This eliminates compatibility concerns and guarantees that every component works seamlessly together from the moment you unbox the vehicle.
  • 1/18 Scale Size for Portability and Accessibility — At just 32cm long and 842g in weight, this ready-to-run RC crawler fits easily in a backpack or rucksack. The compact footprint makes high-end crawling possible in locations where larger 1/10 scale rigs cannot operate, expanding where and when you can enjoy the hobby.

Technical Performance

The Axial UTB18 Capra is engineered to deliver genuine rock crawling performance in a miniature package. At its heart beats a Dynamite Tazer 37T brushed motor (380 size) paired with a Spektrum SLT 25A brushed 2-in-1 ESC/RX that handles both motor control and receiver functions. The drivetrain features a locked bevel gear differential (33/13T ratio) with an internal gear ratio of 10.2:1, producing a final drive ratio of 44.88:1—geared specifically for low-speed, high-torque crawling rather than speed. The 4WD system ensures all four wheels deliver power simultaneously, critical for maintaining traction on uneven terrain. Power comes from a Dynamite 7.4V 650mAh 2S LiPo battery with EC2 connector (compatible with 2S LiPo systems), providing adequate runtime for extensive trail sessions whilst maintaining the lightweight profile essential for 1/18 scale performance. The suspension features solid axle geometry both front and rear with coil-over shocks adjustable between 2.2 and 3.1 inches (55-78.5mm), allowing fine-tuning of ride height and compliance. The vehicle sits on a 9-inch (229mm) wheelbase with 7.7-inch (195mm) front and rear track widths, creating a balanced stance optimised for climbing and articulation. Ground clearance of 1.7 inches (43mm) is enhanced by the portal axles, allowing the crawler to ride over obstacles that would ground ordinary vehicles. The brushed motor offers smooth, controllable power delivery characteristic of brushed systems, with the 48-pitch gears ensuring efficient power transfer. Construction throughout emphasises durability: ball bearings support all rotating shafts, stainless steel lower links resist corrosion, and machined metal axles withstand the stresses of serious crawling. The integrated braking system is controlled through the ESC, providing smooth modulation essential for steep descents and precise positioning on obstacles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Axial UTB18 Capra suitable for beginners and first-time RC crawlers? — Absolutely. This ready-to-run RC buggy is specifically designed for accessibility. Everything arrives pre-assembled and pre-configured, meaning beginners avoid complex electronics setup. The intuitive 2-channel radio (forward, brake, reverse on one stick; steering on the other) is straightforward to master. The proven 4-link suspension and portal axles are forgiving and stable, making it easy to develop crawling skills without fighting unpredictable handling. Many experienced crawlers also appreciate having a compact, ready-to-run RC crawler for casual sessions.
  • What battery does the UTB18 Capra need, and how long does it take to charge? — The vehicle comes equipped with a Dynamite 7.4V 650mAh 2S LiPo battery, which is the correct specification for this model. The included Dynamite USB charger will recharge the battery (charge time varies depending on USB power source, typically 1-2 hours for full charge from completely depleted). The 2S LiPo specification cannot be upgraded to higher cell counts, as the ESC and motor are specifically calibrated for this voltage. Always use a quality LiPo charger and never over-discharge the battery to maintain longevity.
  • How does the 1/18 scale compare to larger RC crawlers like the Capra 1.9? — The UTB18 Capra replicates the tube chassis design and suspension geometry of the 1/10 scale Capra 1.9 Unlimited Trail Buggy, but in miniature. At 1/18 scale, it's approximately half the linear dimensions and roughly one-quarter the weight, making it far more portable and affordable. Performance is comparable within its class—it climbs rocks, navigates obstacles, and demonstrates full articulation just as capably as larger crawlers, only on a smaller scale. The trade-off is slightly less absolute ground clearance and shorter overall runtime, but for enthusiasts with space limitations or those seeking portability, the 1/18 scale is genuinely superior.
  • What makes the portal axles so important for rock crawling? — Portal axles reposition the differential above the axle rather than at the centre, immediately raising the lowest point of the vehicle. This extra ground clearance allows the chassis and components to ride higher over rocks and obstacles without grounding. In real rock crawling vehicles, this is a proven design that allows vehicles to traverse terrain that would disable conventional axle designs. For the UTB18 Capra, the 1.7-inch ground clearance delivered by portal axles means it can clamber over obstacles with impressive authority.
  • Is the 4-link suspension better than other suspension types for crawling? — Yes, for rock crawling specifically. The 4-link geometry allows the suspension to compress and extend independently at all four corners whilst maintaining predictable chassis attitude. This design excels at keeping all four tyres in contact with uneven terrain simultaneously, which is essential for traction and stability. The alternative—swing axle or other simpler designs—can cause the chassis to pitch or roll excessively, losing traction. Axial has fine-tuned the UTB18 Capra's specific 4-link geometry to match the unique demands of 1/18 scale crawling.
  • What is the difference between this brushed motor setup and brushless alternatives? — The Dynamite Tazer 37T brushed motor provides smooth, controllable power delivery with excellent low-speed torque, essential for crawling where precise throttle modulation matters more than raw speed. Brushed motors are also more forgiving to beginners and cost less to replace if damaged. Brushless alternatives would add cost and complexity without benefiting crawling performance, since crawlers rarely need the high-speed capability where brushless excels. For this application, brushed is the right choice.
  • Can I upgrade or modify the UTB18 Capra after purchase? — Yes. The UTB18 Capra has a thriving aftermarket parts ecosystem. Upgrades include brass portal covers for additional weight bias (improving crawling feel), alternative tyre compounds, upgraded servos for more torque, hop-up kits, and more. The modular design means components can be replaced or upgraded individually. However, the 1/18 scale is small enough that major modifications like switching motor systems are impractical—keep modifications focused on suspension tuning, tyre selection, and weight distribution.
  • How does the Spektrum SLT2 radio compare to other 2-channel RC remotes? — The Spektrum SLT2 is a purpose-built crawler remote offering proven reliability and a comfortable grip. The 2.4GHz frequency is crowded-immune, meaning it won't lose signal even with multiple RC vehicles nearby. The 2-channel layout (throttle/brake plus steering) is perfect for crawling, where complex multi-function control is unnecessary. The included receiver (integrated into the ESC) eliminates additional components, reducing weight and complexity. For ready-to-run simplicity, the SLT2 is excellent.
  • What terrain can the UTB18 Capra handle? — The Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tyres and portal axles make this crawler exceptionally capable on rocky, uneven terrain. It excels on loose rocks, dirt tracks, grass, sand, and rough woodland ground. The all-terrain tyre compound provides grip across diverse surfaces. Whilst it's not designed for water fording or mud bogging, it handles most outdoor UK terrain from garden obstacles to dedicated crawling parks. Always inspect terrain for hazards before crawling, and avoid glass, sharp metal, and extreme water crossings.
  • Is this ready-to-run RC crawler suitable for children? — The UTB18 Capra is designed for ages 8 and upward, though this depends on maturity and supervision. The radio requires steady hands and coordination, and the lithium battery requires responsible charging and handling (never leave charging unattended). Younger children may need adult assistance with charging and battery management. The small size means small fingers should handle it carefully—components like the servo can be damaged by careless handling. Supervision and proper instruction are recommended for younger operators.
