Overview

The Tamiya 1/10 Fighting Buggy Off-Road Kit – Super Champ Re-Release – TAM47304 is a faithful reproduction of one of the most iconic RC buggies ever created. Originally launched in 1982 as the Super Champ and exported globally, this legendary model makes a triumphant return after more than 30 years. This special re-release celebrates the rich heritage of RC modelling whilst incorporating modern engineering improvements that enhance durability and performance without compromising the authentic character that made the original so beloved. Whether you're an experienced RC enthusiast, a collector of classic RC cars UK, or someone discovering the world of off-road RC buggies for the first time, the Fighting Buggy offers an engaging build experience and outstanding on-the-track performance.

This is a complete un-assembled kit that requires full user assembly, making it an ideal project for intermediate to advanced builders seeking a hands-on construction experience. The kit arrives in nostalgic blister pack packaging that recalls the era when this model first captured the imagination of RC hobbyists worldwide. The Fighting Buggy is engineered for genuine off-road performance with a proven 2WD drivetrain layout, making it suitable for outdoor terrain ranging from dirt tracks to garden courses. It's a vehicle that rewards skilled driving whilst remaining accessible enough to provide enjoyment for builders of varying experience levels.

RC Model Shop is proud to stock this classic re-release, offering UK RC enthusiasts the opportunity to own a piece of RC history with modern quality assurance and expert support.

Key Features

  • Authentic ABS Resin Body with Aluminium Roof Wing — The classic body shape is faithfully reproduced in durable ABS resin, capturing the original Fighting Buggy's distinctive profile. The aluminium roof panel with integrated wing provides both authentic styling and practical aerodynamic benefit during high-speed off-road running, helping to maintain stability on uneven terrain.
  • New 2.5mm Thick FRP Chassis Plate — The fresh engineering incorporates a lightweight yet rigid FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) chassis measuring 2.5mm in thickness, which significantly improves structural integrity compared to thinner alternatives. This enhanced rigidity reduces flex under load whilst maintaining the weight efficiency essential for competitive off-road performance on rough ground.
  • Transverse Damper Rear Suspension with Progressive Spring — The rear suspension faithfully recreates the original transverse damper setup, a proven design that provides excellent bump absorption and maintains traction on uneven surfaces. The progressive spring rate and separate oil reserve tank work together to deliver responsive handling characteristics whilst soaking up impacts from rocks, ruts and obstacles.
  • Double Trailing Arm Front Suspension — The front suspension employs a double trailing arm geometry with die-cast construction, a design choice that provides excellent steering response and predictable handling characteristics. This suspension configuration is particularly effective for maintaining consistent traction during cornering and aggressive directional changes on off-road terrain.
  • Sealed Die-Cast Gear Case with Direct Drive — The transmission features a sealed die-cast gear case that houses the motor and employs a direct drive setup. This design provides robust protection against dirt and debris ingress whilst delivering efficient power transfer directly to the wheels, eliminating unnecessary mechanical losses and ensuring responsive acceleration.
  • Die-Cast Suspension Arms — Both front and rear suspension arms are manufactured from die-cast material, providing superior strength and durability compared to plastic alternatives. This construction choice ensures the suspension geometry remains consistent under load and resists damage from impacts on rocky or technical terrain.
  • Ribbed Spike Tyres on 3-Piece Wheels — The model is fitted with ribbed spike tyres mounted securely on 3-piece wheels, a combination that delivers excellent grip on loose off-road surfaces. The tyre design provides confident acceleration and braking whilst the multi-piece wheel construction allows easy tyre removal and replacement.
  • Newly-Designed Classic Stickers — The decal sheet retains many of the iconic themes from the original 1982 model whilst adding fresh modern motifs. These new stickers allow builders to customise their Fighting Buggy with authentic period-correct liveries that celebrate both the model's heritage and its contemporary re-release.
  • Nostalgic Blister Pack Packaging — The kit arrives in classic blister pack style packaging that evokes the golden era of RC hobby retail. This presentation choice makes the Fighting Buggy an attractive addition to any collector's display whilst maintaining the authentic unboxing experience that vintage RC enthusiasts cherish.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Fighting Buggy TAM47304 delivers genuine off-road performance through a carefully engineered combination of proven mechanical principles and modern material science. The brushed motor operates within a sealed die-cast gear case with direct drive transmission, eliminating the complexity of multi-stage gearboxes whilst ensuring efficient power delivery to the rear wheels in this 2WD configuration. The 2.5mm FRP chassis plate provides the structural foundation, maintaining rigidity whilst keeping overall weight to a level that ensures responsive acceleration and genuine off-road agility. Suspension engineering combines the proven transverse damper rear setup — complete with progressive spring rates and dedicated oil reserve tank — with the equally capable double trailing arm front suspension, both utilising die-cast arms for exceptional durability. This suspension architecture excels on off-road terrain, absorbing impacts from rocks, roots and ruts whilst maintaining consistent traction through technical sections. The ribbed spike tyres mounted on 3-piece wheels provide the grip essential for confident cornering and acceleration on loose surfaces including dirt, grass and sandy terrain. For UK RC enthusiasts building a complete ready-to-run RC buggy, the Fighting Buggy requires integration with a 2-channel radio system, steering servo, electronic speed control, brushed-compatible battery pack, and suitable charger. The skill level rating of 3 reflects the assembly complexity and technical knowledge needed to complete the kit; builders should be comfortable with soldering, mechanical assembly and motor installation, making this an excellent intermediate-level project that builds genuine RC competency.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya Fighting Buggy TAM47304 suitable for beginners learning RC off-road buggies? — The Fighting Buggy carries a Skill Level 3 rating, which indicates it is most suitable for intermediate builders rather than complete beginners. The kit requires full assembly including soldering the motor connections, precise mechanical assembly of suspension components, and integration of electronic systems. However, the straightforward mechanical design and availability of detailed instruction manuals make it an excellent stepping stone for builders who have completed simpler projects and wish to develop their RC skills. If you're new to RC modelling, we recommend starting with a ready-to-run RC buggy before tackling this un-assembled kit.
  • What battery does the Tamiya Fighting Buggy need and what runtime should I expect? — The Fighting Buggy utilises a brushed motor compatible with standard 7.2V NiMH battery packs, the most common choice being a 6-cell NiMH stick pack typically offering 3000mAh capacity. Runtime depends on driving style, terrain difficulty, and battery capacity, with realistic expectations being 15-30 minutes of active off-road running before requiring a recharge. A peak detection charger is recommended as it automatically stops charging when the battery reaches full capacity, preventing overcharge damage and extending battery lifespan.
  • What radio system, servo and speed controller does this kit require? — The Fighting Buggy requires a 2-channel surface frequency radio system with both transmitter and receiver, a steering servo with at least 4kg torque capacity, and a brushed-motor-compatible electronic speed controller. Many UK RC retailers offer starter bundles combining compatible components at discounted prices, which is the most cost-effective approach for new builders. The sealed gear case design means the ESC and motor work as an integrated unit, so ensure your chosen speed controller is explicitly rated for brushed motors in 1/10 scale configurations.
  • How does this re-release compare to the original 1982 Fighting Buggy or Super Champ? — The TAM47304 is a thoughtfully engineered re-release that honours the original design whilst incorporating modern improvements. The key differences include the new 2.5mm FRP chassis plate offering superior rigidity compared to earlier materials, die-cast suspension arms providing greater durability than plastic alternatives, updated ABS resin body formulation for improved impact resistance, and modern sticker designs that blend authentic period themes with contemporary graphics. The fundamental driving characteristics, suspension geometry and body profile remain faithful to the original, ensuring that drivers familiar with the 1982 model will immediately recognise the Fighting Buggy whilst appreciating the durability enhancements that modern materials provide.
  • Is the Fighting Buggy waterproof and suitable for wet weather off-road running? — The Fighting Buggy is not waterproof as listed in the manufacturer specifications. The sealed gear case provides protection for the drivetrain, but the electronics (servo, ESC, receiver) are not sealed. You should avoid water-based terrain, puddles, and wet conditions to prevent damage to the electrical components. This makes it ideal for dry off-road courses, dirt tracks, and garden courses on dry days, but unsuitable for muddy terrain or rainy weather operation.
  • Can I upgrade or modify the Fighting Buggy after building the kit? — The straightforward design of the Fighting Buggy makes it highly amenable to modification and upgrading. Many UK RC retailers stock compatible suspension upgrades, alternative servo options, performance ESCs, and motor choices. The sealed gear case design does limit internal motor upgrades, but external improvements such as upgraded shocks, alternative wheels and tyres, lightweight suspension arms, and advanced radio systems are all possible. Tamiya also manufactures a range of spare parts and upgrade options specifically for the Fighting Buggy, ensuring long-term availability of components for maintenance and enhancement.
