Overview

The Traxxas Maxx VXL 1:10 4X4 RTR Monster Truck in Blue represents the pinnacle of ready to run RC monster truck performance for UK enthusiasts. This is not just an update to an already legendary platform — it is a complete reimagining of what a 1/10 scale monster truck can achieve. Traxxas has taken their award-winning Maxx design, widened the suspension geometry with the innovative WideMAXX kit, and packaged it all into a vehicle that combines X-Maxx toughness with a lighter, more compact, more ferocious presence. Whether you are a seasoned RC basher looking for your next challenge or an enthusiast stepping up from smaller vehicles, this brushless RC monster truck delivers extreme power, extreme durability, and extreme fun in equal measure.

As a fully assembled ready to run RC model, the Maxx VXL arrives 90 percent complete and ready for action the moment you charge a compatible LiPo battery and insert four AA batteries into the transmitter. The comprehensive package includes the TQi 2.4 GHz radio system, VXL-4S waterproof electronic speed control, Velineon 540XL brushless motor, and all the mechanical components needed to dominate any terrain. This is genuine Traxxas engineering — the same company that has powered RC racing and bashing for decades — now available as an immediately usable ready to run brushless RC truck that needs only batteries and a charger to get moving.

With a top speed of 60+ mph and 96+ kph capability when properly geared and powered, the Maxx VXL stands ready to redefine your RC experience. The expanded battery bay accommodates larger 6700mAh LiPo packs for extended run times, whilst the WideMAXX suspension kit provides superior handling, stability, and control across all driving surfaces. This is not merely another monster truck — this is an investment in performance, reliability, and endless hours of RC driving enjoyment.

Key Features

  • WideMAXX Suspension Kit Installed — The Maxx arrives pre-equipped with the WideMAXX suspension system, which provides expanded track width and geometry optimisation. This wider stance dramatically improves stability during high-speed runs, reduces body roll through corners, and enhances traction across uneven terrain. The wider platform means you can push the truck harder without fear of capsizing, making it safer and more fun for drivers of all skill levels.
  • Velineon 540XL Brushless Motor with 5mm Shaft — The heart of the Maxx VXL is Traxxas's legendary brushless motor technology. The 540XL features a substantial 5mm motor shaft (compared to standard 3.2mm shafts on lesser motors), providing greater durability and reduced flex during aggressive acceleration. With 2400 kV rating, this motor delivers relentless torque and mind-bending top-end speed, whilst the advanced 32-bit microprocessor constantly monitors output for efficient, consistent performance throughout your entire battery charge cycle.
  • VXL-4S Waterproof Electronic Speed Control — Unlike basic brushed ESCs, the VXL-4S represents cutting-edge speed controller technology. This unit is fully waterproof, meaning you can push through deep water crossings and wet conditions without fear of electrical failure. The integrated telemetry system monitors your truck's performance in real time, while the advanced electronics optimise throttle response and deliver smooth, predictable power delivery.
  • Expanded Battery Bay for 6700mAh LiPo — Traxxas redesigned the battery compartment to accommodate larger capacity batteries (specifically the TRX2890X 6700mAh 14.8V 4-Cell LiPo). This expansion means longer run times between charges — crucial when you are out at the track or your local bash spot. The larger battery bay maintains the truck's balanced weight distribution and does not compromise handling or speed.
  • Sledgehammer 2.8-Inch Tyres with Foam Inserts — The Maxx rides on pre-glued Sledgehammer tyres measuring 5.6 x 2.8 to 3.6 inches. These chunky, aggressive treads are designed to bite into loose surfaces whilst maintaining traction on hardpack. The foam inserts provide consistent suspension feel and help absorb impacts from large jumps and obstacles. The pre-glued construction means zero setup time — straight out of the box, you have mission-ready rubber.
  • TQi 2.4 GHz 2-Channel Radio System with TSM — This is not a basic entry-level transmitter. The TQi 2.4 GHz system offers superior range, faster signal processing, and integration with Traxxas's renowned Stability Management (TSM) system. TSM actively monitors wheel slip and body acceleration, automatically adjusting throttle to maintain directional control. The system even includes self-righting capability, automatically correcting the truck if it tips over — a genuine game-changer for recovery and continuous driving fun.
  • Shaft-Driven 4WD Torque-Biasing Center Differential — The Maxx employs a sealed, hardened steel bevel differential with limited slip characteristics. This is not toy-grade engineering. The torque-biasing design optimally distributes power between front and rear axles, preventing wheel slip whilst maintaining traction during turning. The Cush Drive system absorbs impacts and reduces shock loads on drivetrain components, meaning your truck will last through thousands of jumps and bashes without breaking.
  • Modular Composite Chassis Designed for Impact Absorption — Instead of a simple plastic tub, the Maxx uses an intelligently designed modular composite structure that absorbs and dissipates impact energy across the entire chassis frame. This engineering approach means the truck can land hard and keep going, rather than transferring all impact force to individual components and causing failure. This is the same philosophy Traxxas uses in their larger, heavier X-Maxx platform.
  • Heavy-Duty GT-Maxx Aluminium Shocks with Large-Diameter Shafts — Suspension is handled by threaded aluminium shock towers with impressively large diameter shafts. These substantial shocks provide exceptional damping control whilst resisting bending and failure under extreme loads. Whether you are landing 8-foot jumps or pounding through rutted terrain, these shocks maintain composure and deliver predictable suspension performance.
  • Double-Shear Bellcrank Steering with 285oz-in Servo Torque — Steering is managed through a robust double-shear bellcrank geometry that resists kickback and maintains precise directional control. The servo provides 285 ounces-inches of torque — more than sufficient to maintain steering authority even when the front tyres are heavily loaded during high-speed cornering or climbing steep hills.
  • 60+ mph Top Speed Performance Ready — With a 4S LiPo battery and optional gear upgrades, the Maxx achieves speeds exceeding 60 mph (96+ kph). This genuine high-speed capability places it in the performance tier of RC monster trucks. Whether you are racing against friends or pushing personal speed records, the Maxx delivers genuine thrills and adrenaline-fueled driving experiences.
  • Fully Assembled Ready-to-Run RTR Format — Unlike RC kits that require hours of assembly and tuning, the Maxx arrives 90 percent complete. You simply need to charge a compatible LiPo battery, insert transmitter batteries, and you are ready to drive. This ready to run approach makes it perfect for busy enthusiasts who want performance without the build time, whilst still offering genuine customisation and upgrade potential for those who want to tinker.
  • Skill Level 4 Rating Reflecting Intermediate to Advanced Complexity — Traxxas rates the Maxx at skill level 4, indicating it is suited to drivers with some RC experience. The power and speed are genuinely impressive, requiring respect and careful throttle management. However, the proven engineering and comprehensive support from the Traxxas community mean that dedicated beginners with instruction can certainly master this truck and grow into its capabilities.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas Maxx VXL 1:10 4X4 represents a significant engineering achievement in brushless RC truck design. At 10.4 pounds (4.7 kg), the truck is lighter than many competitors yet features driveline components proven in vehicles both larger and heavier than itself — a testament to Traxxas's materials science and design philosophy. The Velineon 540XL brushless motor with its 2400 kV rating and substantial 5mm shaft diameter delivers consistent, high-output power management through a 32-bit microprocessor that continuously monitors and optimises performance. This motor pairs with the VXL-4S waterproof ESC, which supports 4S LiPo battery systems (14.8V nominal) and integrates telemetry monitoring for real-time performance feedback. The transmission is single-speed with an overall drive ratio of 12.37 (23/50 motor pinion and spur gear), optimised for the balance between acceleration and top-end speed. With the stock gearing and a 4S LiPo battery, users can expect 60+ mph top speed; professional tuners with upgraded pinion gears achieve substantially higher velocities. The sealed hardened steel bevel differential with limited slip characteristics provides intelligent power distribution, preventing wheel slip whilst maintaining traction through corners. Suspension management comes from large-diameter threaded aluminium GT-Maxx shocks measuring 4.90 inches (124mm) in length, providing excellent damping control and impact absorption. The chassis measures 22.50 inches long (572mm) with a 13.85-inch wheelbase (352mm), front and rear track widths of 15.95 inches (405mm), and ground clearance ranging from 1.90 inches at the lowest skid point to 2.6 inches at centre. The 2.8-inch Sledgehammer pre-glued tyres (5.64-inch diameter) with foam inserts provide aggressive traction on loose surfaces whilst maintaining road feel on hardpack. The composite modular tub chassis absorbs impact energy intelligently, dissipating forces across the entire structure rather than concentrating stress on individual components. This engineering approach, combined with waterproof electronics and sealed differentials, enables extended lifespan and reliability through intensive bashing and competitive driving. Battery compatibility includes the recommended 14.8V 4-cell LiPo (TRX2890X 6700mAh) for maximum performance, with reduced-performance operation possible using 11.1V 3-cell systems. The vehicle operates on a TQi 2.4 GHz 2-channel radio system with integrated TSM (Traxxas Stability Management) receiver, requiring four AA alkaline batteries in the transmitter.

What You Need to Complete

  • LiPo Battery — Traxxas recommends a 4-cell 14.8V LiPo battery (such as the TRX2890X 6700mAh model) for maximum performance and to utilise the expanded battery bay. A 3-cell 11.1V LiPo battery will operate the vehicle with reduced performance. NiMH batteries are not supported and will not function with this vehicle. Battery selection significantly impacts speed, acceleration, and runtime — a quality LiPo is essential for unlocking the Maxx's true capabilities.
  • LiPo Balance Charger with iD Connector — A dedicated LiPo charger with integrated balancing circuitry is essential. Traxxas recommends the EZ-Peak Live 4s-capable charger (model 2971) for fast, intelligent charging that protects your battery investment. Standard wall chargers or NiMH chargers will not safely charge LiPo batteries and risk damage or fire.
  • Four AA Alkaline Batteries — The TQi transmitter requires four AA alkaline batteries for operation. These must be replaced periodically during regular use and kept on hand for extended driving sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Traxxas Maxx VXL suitable for beginners in RC driving? — The Maxx VXL is rated as skill level 4, positioning it as intermediate to advanced rather than entry-level. However, beginners with instruction and patience can certainly learn to drive this truck responsibly. The key is respecting the power: start with smooth throttle inputs, practice in open spaces away from obstacles, and gradually build confidence. The TQi radio system and TSM stability management system actually help newer drivers by preventing the truck from spinning out unpredictably. If you are entirely new to RC, you might consider starting with a skill level 2 or 3 vehicle before graduating to the Maxx, but plenty of enthusiasts have successfully learned on this platform with proper guidance.
  • What battery does the Traxxas Maxx VXL need and how long does it run? — The Maxx VXL requires a 4-cell 14.8V LiPo battery (4S) for maximum performance. Traxxas specifically recommends the TRX2890X 6700mAh 25C iD LiPo battery, which fits the expanded battery bay designed into this model. A 3-cell 11.1V LiPo will also work but delivers reduced performance. Do not use NiMH batteries — they are incompatible with the VXL-4S ESC. Runtime depends on driving style and battery capacity; a 6700mAh battery typically provides 15-30 minutes of continuous running, though more aggressive driving consumes power faster.
  • How fast does the Maxx VXL go? — Traxxas rates the Maxx VXL at 60+ mph top speed with a 4S LiPo battery and stock gearing. Under ideal conditions with optional upgraded pinion gears, drivers have achieved speeds exceeding 96+ kph (60+ mph equivalent). Top speed depends on several factors: battery voltage and capacity, gearing ratios, surface conditions, and driving technique. Most UK drivers find the stock configuration more than adequate for recreational bashing and small-track racing.
  • What is the WideMAXX suspension system and why does it matter? — WideMAXX is Traxxas's widened suspension geometry package, which increases the track width and overall stance of the Maxx. This wider platform dramatically improves stability at speed, reduces body roll through corners, and prevents tipping during aggressive driving. The system comes pre-installed on this ready to run model, meaning you get the handling benefits without any additional installation or tuning. This is a genuine performance upgrade that separates the newer WideMAXX Maxx from older straight-chassis models.
  • Is the VXL-4S speed control waterproof? — Yes, the VXL-4S is fully waterproof, allowing you to drive through water crossings and wet conditions without fear of electrical failure. This opens up diverse driving environments and adds to the truck's versatility. However, waterproofing does not mean submersion-proof — whilst brief water contact is fine, extended underwater driving should be avoided to protect the motor and receiver.
  • Can I upgrade and customise the Maxx VXL? — Absolutely. The Maxx has an extensive parts catalogue and genuine upgrade ecosystem. You can upgrade the pinion gear for higher top speed, swap shock oil for different suspension characteristics, install LED lighting kits, upgrade to higher-capacity batteries, and much more. The modular construction and Traxxas parts availability make the Maxx an excellent platform for progressive customisation.
  • What radio system does the Maxx VXL use and is it compatible with other Traxxas vehicles? — The Maxx VXL features the TQi 2.4 GHz 2-channel radio system with integrated Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) receiver. This system is broadly compatible with other Traxxas TQi-equipped vehicles, meaning if you own multiple Traxxas models, your transmitter can control them all (through model selection menus). The frequency-hopping 2.4 GHz design ensures excellent range and interference rejection, even in crowded areas with multiple RC vehicles operating simultaneously.
  • How does Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) work and what does self-righting do? — TSM monitors wheel slip and body acceleration in real time, automatically adjusting throttle and brake to maintain directional control and prevent skids. This advanced system feels almost like power steering, helping newer drivers maintain control during aggressive driving. The self-righting function specifically monitors whether the truck has tipped over; if detected, the system automatically applies reverse throttle to rotate the truck back onto its wheels. This is a genuine convenience feature that keeps you driving rather than stopping to flip your truck upright.
  • What is the difference between the Maxx VXL and the X-Maxx? — The X-Maxx is Traxxas's flagship 1/8 scale monster truck — significantly larger, heavier, and more powerful. The Maxx VXL is a 1/10 scale interpretation that packages X-Maxx's innovative design philosophy (modular chassis, sealed differentials, heavy-duty driveline) into a smaller, lighter, faster platform. The Maxx is more suitable for typical UK driving environments, nimble enough for tight courses, and faster top speed. The X-Maxx is a heavyweight bashmaster for those wanting maximum durability and sheer crushing power. For most enthusiasts, the Maxx VXL offers the optimal balance of performance, handling, and practicality.
  • What maintenance does the Maxx VXL require? — Regular maintenance is straightforward. After driving in dusty conditions, blow out dirt from the air intake and chassis. Check that all bolts remain tight after heavy bashing. Clean the motor cooling vents to ensure proper heat dissipation. Periodically inspect suspension components for damage and replace shock oil if damping feels inconsistent. Drain the battery bay of any water that may have accumulated. Traxxas includes maintenance tools in the box, and the comprehensive manual provides detailed guidance. The sealed differentials and waterproof electronics mean less regular servicing than older designs.
  • What is the ground clearance and can the Maxx VXL climb hills? — The Maxx VXL offers 1.90 inches ground clearance at the lowest skid point and 2.6 inches at centre, providing excellent obstacle clearance. With the sealed bevel differential and powerful 540XL motor delivering maximum torque, the truck climbs surprisingly steep inclines. The torque-biasing centre differential prevents wheel slip during climbing, maintaining traction through challenging terrain. Whilst not specifically a rock crawler, the Maxx handles hillsides and rough topography with impressive competence.
