About the Subaru BRAT The Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter was created by Subaru in the late 1970 s fromtheir earlier 4WD station wagon model for the US market. Powered by a flat-four engine rangingfrom 1.6 to 1.8 liters in displacement, this pickup had the unique feature of having jump seatswelded to the truck bed, which allowed it to be imported as a car instead of a truck. One of thecar s more famous owners was former US President Ronald Reagan, whose red BRAT is restoredand displayed at his former residence in California.

How does the RS540 motor support off-road performance?
The Tamiya TAM58384 off-road pick-up with space frame chassis, diaphragm dampers, and block-pattern tires features a factory-installed RS540 motor that powers the rear-wheel drive system. This motor delivers reliable torque and acceleration, making it ideal for navigating rough terrain and executing jumps. Paired with a differential-equipped gearbox and dogbone drive shaft, the motor ensures efficient power transfer and consistent traction. Whether racing across dirt tracks or tackling backyard trails, the RS540 motor provides the thrust needed for classic off-road action.
What makes the dual body configuration unique?
The Tamiya TAM58384 classic 2WD buggy with resin display body and lightweight polycarbonate racing shell includes two distinct body options to suit different use cases. The resin shell is highly detailed and ideal for shelf display, capturing the vintage look of the original Subaru Brat. The polycarbonate shell, on the other hand, is lightweight and durable—perfect for racing and active terrain use. This dual-body setup allows builders to switch between presentation and performance without compromising authenticity or functionality.
How does the suspension system improve terrain handling?
The 1/10 scale Subaru Brat with front double wishbone suspension and rear trailing arm with oil dampers features a fully independent 4-wheel suspension architecture. The front double wishbone setup includes in-board springs and steel radius arms for responsive steering and shock absorption. At the rear, trailing arms are paired with diaphragm-type oil dampers and coil springs, offering improved damping efficiency and stability over uneven surfaces. This configuration ensures that each wheel maintains contact with the ground, enhancing control and reducing bounce during aggressive maneuvers.
What role does the chassis and drivetrain play in performance?
The RC pick-up truck kit with 8-spoke wheels, dogbone drive shaft, and 3-step gear ratio transmission is built around a space frame chassis that balances weight and rigidity. This structure resists flexing under load and protects internal components during impacts. The dogbone-style drive shaft ensures secure power transmission from motor to wheels, while the sealed gearbox maintains smooth operation and protects against debris. With three selectable gear ratios—6.7:1, 7.3:1, and 8.5:1—builders can tune the drivetrain for speed, torque, or terrain-specific performance.
What are the dimensions and tire specifications?
The Tamiya TAM58384 with 453mm length, 220mm width, and 175mm height for nostalgic off-road realism is sized for 1/10 scale terrain performance and visual impact. Its 1,840g resin body adds mass for improved traction and suspension response, while the 82mm block-pattern tires provide grip across loose surfaces. The 8-spoke wheels enhance the vintage aesthetic and support rugged terrain handling. With a tread width of 197mm at the front and 178mm at the rear, the chassis maintains directional stability and rear traction during cornering and acceleration.
Why choose the Subaru Brat for your next build?
The best electric RC pick-up with nostalgic 1983 design, upgraded suspension, and realistic driver figure offers a unique blend of heritage and performance. From its dual body configuration and vintage styling to its modern suspension and drivetrain upgrades, the TAM58384 delivers both display value and racing capability. Whether you're a collector seeking a classic reissue or a hobbyist looking for a versatile off-road platform, this kit provides the flexibility and authenticity to satisfy both goals.
