Overview

The Tamiya XR311 Combat Support Vehicle 1/12 Scale 2WD Off-Road R/C Buggy Kit TAM58004 is a legendary re-release of Tamiya's first-ever suspension-equipped RC buggy, originally launched in 1977. This 2012 re-release honours the classic heritage of the original whilst incorporating modern engineering improvements that make it more capable and enjoyable for today's RC enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned collector seeking an authentic piece of RC history, a vintage RC car UK enthusiast, or someone discovering classic RC buggies for the first time, the XR311 delivers genuine off-road performance combined with timeless military styling that turns heads at any RC meeting or display.

The XR311 stands out in the marketplace because it represents a landmark moment in RC history—the introduction of a fully-suspended RC buggy platform. Unlike simpler fixed-axle designs that preceded it, the XR311's sophisticated double-wishbone suspension system with metal torsion bar springs allows the chassis to handle uneven terrain with confidence and composure. The injection-moulded body captures the purposeful aesthetic of a military combat support vehicle in authentic olive drab, complete with detailed cockpit interior and a driver figure for exceptional realism. This is not a ready to run RC car UK; rather, it's an engaging assembly kit that rewards patient builders with a unique and satisfying RC experience.

The duralumin 52S chassis forms an exceptionally strong yet lightweight foundation that has proven its durability over decades of RC use. The rear-wheel-drive layout with a centre-mounted battery position delivers authentic vintage handling characteristics, whilst the fully-enclosed gearbox offers three selectable gear ratios (9.3:1, 16:1, and 21:1) to suit different driving preferences and terrain types. For anyone seeking a genuine piece of RC heritage that still delivers engaging off-road performance, the Tamiya XR311 Combat Support Vehicle is an uncompromising choice.

Key Features

  • 1/12 Scale Proportions — The balanced 405mm length, 173mm width and 135mm height provide faithful proportions for both realistic display presence and practical handling during off-road driving sessions, making the model immediately recognisable as the classic XR311 design.
  • Duralumin 52S Chassis Frame — This premium lightweight yet exceptionally rigid material has been proven through decades of RC use, providing the structural integrity needed to absorb impacts whilst maintaining precise geometry during aggressive off-road manoeuvres.
  • 4-Wheel Double Wishbone Suspension with Metal Torsion Bar Springs — Front and rear suspension uses upper and lower H-arms with adjustable metal torsion bar springs, enabling independent wheel control and consistent contact with uneven terrain for predictable handling and confidence-inspiring dynamics.
  • Selectable Gear Ratios — The fully-enclosed gearbox can be assembled with one of three different gear ratios (9.3:1, 16:1, or 21:1), allowing you to optimise performance for your preferred driving style and terrain, from high-speed open ground to technical climbing scenarios.
  • Rear-Wheel Drive Layout — The classic rear-wheel-drive configuration delivers authentic vintage handling character with direct traction feel, avoiding the complexity of a differential system whilst maintaining the unmistakable driving dynamics that defined the original 1977 model.
  • Equal-Length 2-Piece Steering Tie-Rod — Precision steering geometry ensures predictable and responsive handling through corners, with the two-segment construction allowing straightforward assembly and reliable long-term durability.
  • Realistic Injection-Moulded Body — The military-styled body captures authentic combat support vehicle aesthetics in period-correct olive drab, featuring detailed cockpit interior with a driver figure that elevates the model's presence and authenticity.
  • Type 540 Motor — The standard brushed motor delivers reliable, straightforward performance without the complexity of brushless systems, making the XR311 perfect for builders who appreciate mechanical simplicity and vintage authenticity.
  • 3-Bevel Differential — Although rear-wheel drive eliminates a traditional centre differential, the 3-bevel differential system ensures smooth power delivery and precise traction control during cornering and off-road terrain transitions.
  • Balloon Tyre Tread Pattern — The 29mm width front and rear tyres feature a period-correct balloon pattern that provides excellent floatation over soft terrain whilst maintaining authentic period styling that completes the vintage aesthetic.
  • Optimised Weight Distribution — The battery is positioned down the centre of the chassis with receiver and ESC mounted on either side, creating exceptional balance that translates to predictable handling and confidence-inspiring performance.
  • 15mm Ground Clearance — Measured approach, departure and breakover angles support confident operation over light off-road terrain, rocks and obstacles without belly-grounding the chassis.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya XR311 represents a masterclass in engineering efficiency and purposeful design. The duralumin 52S chassis provides remarkable strength-to-weight characteristics, ensuring the model remains responsive and quick despite weighing 1,800 grams—a sensible mass that prevents excessive speed whilst maintaining excellent climbing ability and terrain compliance. The Type 540 brushed motor delivers dependable torque throughout its rev range, perfectly matched to the three available gear ratio options (9.3:1, 16:1, and 21:1) that allow you to tailor performance from brisk acceleration through to tall gearing for extended running over open terrain. The 256mm wheelbase reinforces stability and straight-line tracking, whilst the 138mm front tread and 144mm rear tread create a composed cornering balance that rewards smooth driving inputs. Construction throughout emphasises reliability and longevity—the fully-enclosed gearbox protects internal components from dust and moisture ingress, the duralumin frame resists flexing and maintains precise geometry session after session, and the double-wishbone suspension with independent torsion bar adjustment allows fine-tuning to suit different drivers and terrain conditions. The model is compatible with 7.2-volt stick-type battery packs, representing a standard power option that remains widely available and affordable. Performance is measured and measured is the design philosophy—this is not a blistering speed machine, but rather a capable, engaging off-road buggy that rewards skilful driving with responsive handling and impressive terrain-crossing ability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya XR311 suitable for beginners or first-time RC builders? — The XR311 is designated as Skill Level 2, indicating that whilst assembly requires patience and basic mechanical aptitude, it remains accessible to first-time builders. The straightforward rear-wheel-drive layout, brushed motor system, and logical component arrangement make it considerably more approachable than modern complex multi-channel systems. However, you will need to understand basic assembly techniques, have suitable tools, and be comfortable following detailed instruction manuals. For absolute beginners, we recommend either purchasing a ready-to-run RC car UK model first, or having experienced RC friends assist during your first build.
  • What battery does the Tamiya XR311 require? — The model is compatible with 7.2-volt stick-type battery packs, which typically consist of six R6/AA/UM3 cells arranged in a stick configuration. The most common capacity is around 3000mAh, such as the Tamiya EP3000S Sport Stick Pack, though various manufacturers produce compatible alternatives. The 7.2-volt standard was the dominant RC power solution for decades and remains widely available, making battery procurement straightforward and cost-effective. Runtime on a fully-charged 3000mAh pack is typically 15-25 minutes depending on driving intensity and selected gear ratio.
  • How does the Tamiya XR311 differ from modern brushless RC buggies? — The XR311 uses a brushed Type 540 motor rather than modern brushless systems, which means it requires less sophisticated electronic control and is more forgiving of builder errors during assembly. The rear-wheel-drive layout without a centre differential creates more traditional, twitchy handling compared to modern 4WD buggies, but this also imparts authentic vintage character that appeals to collectors and purists. The suspended duralumin chassis is significantly heavier and more durable than plastic-framed competitors, sacrificing ultimate speed for longevity and presence. Most importantly, the XR311 prioritises authenticity and heritage over raw performance—it's designed to preserve and celebrate RC history rather than to compete with contemporary high-speed platforms.
  • Can I use modern 2.4GHz radio systems with the XR311? — Yes, the model can be paired with any compatible 2.4GHz frequency-hopping radio control system with appropriate receiver. Tamiya's original Finespec FM system was based on older frequency-modulated technology, but modern digital systems with integrated ESC controllers offer superior range, reliability and ease of use. Ensure your chosen radio system includes or is compatible with a brushed-type electronic speed control capable of handling the Type 540 motor.
  • What is the difference between the three gear ratios? — The 9.3:1 gear ratio provides maximum acceleration and climbing torque, making it ideal for technical terrain and obstacle courses where power delivery is prioritised. The 16:1 ratio offers balanced performance suitable for mixed terrain and recreational driving. The 21:1 ratio reduces motor RPM and top speed, extending runtime and reducing motor heat, making it preferable for extended sessions on open ground. Your choice should reflect your intended terrain and driving style.
  • How long does the XR311 take to assemble? — A patient builder with RC experience can typically complete assembly in 4-6 hours, though first-time builders should allow 8-12 hours or more. The process is not overly complex, but it requires attention to detail, proper tool usage, and careful reading of instructions. The modular design means you can work through assembly in stages, perhaps completing the chassis in one session and the body in another.
  • Is the XR311 waterproof? — The model is not inherently waterproof, though the fully-enclosed gearbox offers some protection for internal drivetrain components. The electronic speed control and receiver should be protected from direct water exposure. Light splashing during off-road driving in damp conditions is generally tolerable, but the model is not designed for water crossing or submersion. Rinse lightly with fresh water after muddy sessions to prevent corrosion and caking.
