The Tamiya Scania R620 Highline 1/14 Scale RC Tractor Truck with Dual Axle Drive (TAM56323) represents the pinnacle of large-scale RC truck modelling. This comprehensive assembly kit brings to life one of the world's most recognisable heavy vehicles — the Scania R620, the flagship model of Scania's award-winning 2005 International Truck of the Year R-Series range. If you're searching for a premium RC truck UK enthusiasts can truly respect, this model delivers authentic engineering, meticulous detail, and genuine driving performance that rivals anything available in the RC car and truck market today.

Tamiya has meticulously reproduced the Scania R620's 620hp V8-powered 3-axle 6x4 configuration, creating a model that captures the imposing presence and characteristic styling of the real truck down to the smallest detail. At 520mm in length, this is a substantial and impressive model that demands respect on any RC course or display shelf. Whether you're an experienced RC enthusiast, a serious truck modeller, or someone who appreciates authentic engineering and scale realism, the Scania R620 Highline offers a building and driving experience that goes far beyond typical ready-to-run RC models. This is an unassembled kit for those who want the satisfaction of building their own RC truck from the ground up.

The model is constructed with a durable ladder frame chassis featuring aluminium channels and resin cross members, providing the structural integrity needed for realistic heavy-truck behaviour. Combined with a sophisticated 3-speed transmission that allows gear shifting on the fly, metal leaf spring suspension with coil spring dampers, and dual rear axle drive with individual differentials, the Scania R620 delivers authentic truck dynamics that truly set it apart in the RC truck hobby. This is the machine for serious RC enthusiasts who want more than just a toy — they want a genuine scale model that drives like a real truck.

Key Features

  • 3-Axle 6x4 Configuration with Dual Rear Axle Drive — Each of the two rear axles is independently equipped with a differential gear, ensuring smooth and realistic cornering performance whilst maintaining the authentic weight distribution and handling characteristics of the real Scania R620 heavy truck.
  • 3-Speed Manual Transmission with On-The-Fly Shifting — The sophisticated 3-speed transmission allows drivers to shift gears whilst driving, with three distinct gear ratios (Low: 32.49:1, Second: 17.76:1, Top: 10.66:1) providing realistic acceleration characteristics and the ability to select the optimal speed for different terrain and load conditions, just like operating a real truck.
  • Tilting Cabin with Independent Fender Movement — The cabin tilts forward separately from the fenders, exactly as it does on the full-sized Scania R620, allowing realistic access to the engine bay and authentically depicting the truck's design. The removable fenders themselves allow you to realistically represent a truck carrying a light load by simply removing them.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Scania R620 Highline represents a masterclass in heavy-vehicle RC engineering. Built around a sophisticated ladder frame chassis constructed from aluminium and polycarbonate materials, this model weighs 3.7kg when fully assembled with battery and RC equipment installed. The wheelbase configuration of 237mm plus 103mm (rear axles) provides the authentic proportions of a real Scania R620, whilst the 156mm front tread and 138mm rear tread ensure stable handling across a variety of surfaces. At 520mm in length, 187mm in width, and 293mm in height, the model commands presence on any RC course or display.

The engineering excellence shines through in the suspension design. Metal leaf springs paired with coil spring dampers and aluminium dummy dampers front and rear create suspension geometry that authentically replicates the full-sized truck's setup. The dual rear axle configuration, with each axle fitted with individual 3-bevel differential gears, allows smooth cornering performance whilst maintaining proper weight distribution and traction characteristics. The die-cast metal front axle is float-mounted on the leaf spring and damper assembly, providing realistic independent vertical movement that genuine truck enthusiasts will immediately recognise and appreciate.

The transmission system is particularly noteworthy for a 1/14 scale RC truck model. The 3-speed manual transmission offers three distinct gear ratios: Low (32.49:1) for maximum pulling power and low-speed maneuvering; Second (17.76:1) for balanced acceleration and cruising; and Top (10.66:1) for high-speed running. The ability to shift gears on-the-fly during operation, either forwards or backwards, provides a level of driving authenticity rarely found in ready-to-run RC cars and trucks. The Type 540 brushed motor provides consistent, reliable power delivery, and the pin-type propeller shaft joint minimises friction loss for efficient power transmission to the rear wheels. Tyres measure 22mm in width and 83mm in diameter on all four corners, providing authentic proportions and ground clearance appropriate to a heavy tractor unit.

For those seeking advanced operation, the optional Multi-Function Control Unit (MFC-01) transforms the driving experience entirely. This specialist unit delivers realistic engine sounds digitally recorded from an actual Scania R620 V8 engine, including authentic air horn effects, gear shifting sounds, and transmission whine. Simultaneously, it enables operation of LED headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, and provides realistic low-speed running capability when towing semi-trailers — truly immersive heavy-vehicle simulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya Scania R620 Highline suitable for beginners? — The Scania R620 is classified as Skill Level 3, indicating intermediate-to-advanced modelling difficulty. This is not a beginner's model. Successful completion requires patience, mechanical aptitude, and familiarity with RC assembly procedures. Beginners should expect 30-40+ hours of careful assembly work. However, if you're prepared to invest the time and have some RC experience, the comprehensive instruction manual and well-engineered design make it achievable. First-time builders are strongly advised to watch assembly tutorials online and consider joining an RC community for support.
  • What battery does the Scania R620 need? — The kit is compatible with both LiPo (Lithium Polymer) and NiMH battery packs. User reviews strongly recommend a 2-cell LiPo battery (2S LiPo) for optimal performance, as standard NiMH batteries do not provide sufficient power for proper acceleration and operation of all systems. A 2S LiPo battery (7.4 volts nominal) is the most commonly used option. You'll also need a compatible battery charger and should follow all safety procedures when charging and using LiPo batteries. Always use a balanced charger and follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines.
  • What is the difference between the Scania R620 Highline and other Tamiya 1/14 scale tractor trucks? — Tamiya produces several 1/14 scale heavy trucks including the Scania R470 Highline, Volvo FH12 Globetrotter, Volvo FH16 Globetrotter, Mercedes-Benz Actros, MAN TGX, and others. The R620 Highline is Scania's flagship heavy tractor unit featuring the largest displacement (620hp V8) and represents the top of Scania's truck range. The R470 is a smaller, entry-level Scania model. The primary differences lie in engine size, styling details, cabin design, and overall scale proportions. Each manufacturer's trucks feature their own unique suspension and drivetrain characteristics, so selection often comes down to personal brand preference and the specific styling you find most appealing.
  • Can I attach trailers to the Scania R620? — Yes, absolutely. The model features a kit-included coupler that enables linkage with any of Tamiya's currently available 1/14 scale trailers including semi-trailers, tank-trailers, and pole-trailers. With a trailer attached, the complete setup can exceed 1 metre in length, creating an impressive and dramatic RC truck combination. The optional Multi-Function Control Unit (MFC-01) even provides digital sound effects for realistic attaching and detaching of trailers, adding another layer of immersion to the experience.
  • How long does the Scania R620 take to build? — Experienced RC modellers report completion times ranging from 30-40+ hours depending on your skill level, attention to detail, and whether you're performing any customisation work. The comprehensive instruction manual provides detailed exploded diagrams for each assembly stage. Patience is essential — rushing the build will result in poor performance and potential mechanical issues. Many builders enjoy the assembly process as much as the driving experience, treating the kit as a serious modelling project rather than simply a means to an end.
  • Does the Scania R620 come ready to run? — No, this is an unassembled kit (TAM56323) that requires complete assembly. The body shell requires painting with Tamiya polycarbonate paints before assembly can proceed. You must also source a 4-channel RC radio system, battery pack, charger, and paints separately. This is not a ready-to-run (RTR) model. However, for those willing to invest the time in assembly, the building experience and resulting customisation potential far exceed that of simpler ready-to-run options.
  • What is the Multi-Function Control Unit (MFC-01) and is it necessary? — The MFC-01 is an optional advanced control system that adds professional-level realism to the model. It enables operation of LED lighting (headlights, brake lights, turn signals), realistic engine sounds digitally recorded from an actual Scania R620 V8 engine, authentic air horn and gear shifting sounds, and realistic low-speed running capability when towing semi-trailers. It is not essential for basic operation, but it dramatically enhances the immersion and is highly recommended for serious enthusiasts. The standard 4-channel radio system will still operate all basic functions without it.
  • What makes this a better choice than a ready-to-run RC truck? — The Scania R620 offers unparalleled engineering quality, authentic heavy-vehicle dynamics, superior build materials including aluminium and die-cast metal components, and genuine customisation potential. RTR models are typically simplified, plastic-based designs focused on ease-of-use rather than authenticity. This kit model appeals to serious RC truck enthusiasts who respect engineering, appreciate scale realism, and want to invest time in a project that delivers genuine driving performance and collector-quality results.
  • Is the Scania R620 waterproof? — The electronics and motor are not waterproof by standard. Whilst the model can handle light moisture and wet grass, it is not designed for fully submersion or sustained wet weather operation. Always allow the model to dry completely after wet-weather running and inspect components for corrosion. Never operate in heavy rain or allow water to enter the electronics box. Proper maintenance after wet operation will extend component lifespan significantly.
