A new battery can look perfect on paper - the right voltage, capacity and C-rating - then stop the job at the last inch because the plug will not connect. If you are asking which RC battery connector fits your model, start with the connector on the vehicle’s battery lead, not the connector shown on a battery listing. The battery must physically mate with the ESC lead, but that is only one part of choosing a safe, useful pack.
For most RC cars, lorries and crawlers, the practical answer is simple: buy a battery with the same main power connector as your model. Then confirm the cell count, physical dimensions and discharge capability. A connector adaptor can be useful in specific situations, but it should not be the automatic fix for every mismatch.
Which RC battery connector fits the vehicle lead?
Switch the model off, unplug the old battery and compare its main power plug with the connector fixed to the ESC. Look at the plastic housing shape, the number and size of contacts, and whether the connection is keyed. Product photographs help, but do not rely on a connector’s stated male or female label alone. RC connector terminology is not always used consistently, particularly on shrouded plug designs.
The connector on the ESC lead is the one the battery must match. If your vehicle has an IC5 lead, for example, an IC5 battery is the cleanest choice. If it has an XT60 lead, choose XT60. This avoids extra resistance, reduces clutter in the battery compartment and means there is one less connection to inspect after a hard landing or a wet run.
Also check whether the model has a proprietary battery management system or an integrated identification feature. Some systems are designed to make charging easier within their own battery and charger range. They can still be straightforward to use, but they are not necessarily interchangeable with every similarly sized connector.
Common RC battery connectors at a glance
There is no single best connector for every model. The right choice depends on the current the vehicle draws, the available space and the equipment you already own.
Traxxas High-Current Connector and Traxxas iD
Traxxas connectors are common on Traxxas ready-to-run models and batteries. Traxxas iD batteries add an integrated balance connection arrangement intended for use with compatible iD chargers. They are convenient for owners staying within that ecosystem, especially when charging several packs after a bashing session.
A standard Traxxas high-current connection can be adapted, but make sure you understand the charging arrangement as well as the main power plug. The main connector and balance connection have different jobs.
IC3 and IC5
Spektrum IC connectors are widely found on ARRMA, Losi and Spektrum equipment. IC3 is generally used on smaller and moderate-current applications, while IC5 is suited to larger, higher-current models. They are designed around EC-style connectors, and certain EC3/EC5 and IC3/IC5 combinations can physically work together. However, check the individual battery and model specification rather than assuming every version offers the same feature set.
For a 3S basher, an IC5-equipped pack may be a sensible match where the model is supplied with IC5. For a smaller 2S vehicle, IC3 is more typical. Fitting a larger plug does not make a battery more powerful; voltage, capacity and discharge performance still determine how the pack behaves.
XT60 and XT90
XT60 connectors are a familiar choice across RC cars, aircraft and general LiPo use. Compact, positive-fitting and widely available, they are well suited to many 2S and 3S applications. XT90 connectors use larger contacts and are more appropriate where current demand is higher, such as larger 4S, 6S and 8S vehicles.
The important point is not simply that XT90 is bigger. A large-scale model can pull serious current during acceleration, braking and heavy grass running. An undersized connector or adaptor may become warm, create voltage drop or eventually damage the plug. Match the connector to the system’s intended current level, not just what happens to fit in the battery tray.
Deans/T-plug, EC connectors and Tamiya plugs
Deans or T-plugs remain popular on many established RC models and can handle good current when properly fitted. EC3 and EC5 are also still common, particularly on older Spektrum-compatible equipment and aircraft setups. These are all valid connector systems when they are in good condition and correctly rated for the model.
The older white Tamiya connector is usually seen on entry-level models, NiMH packs and lower-current applications. It is not a good choice for a high-demand brushless setup. If you are upgrading from a brushed vehicle to a more powerful system, the connector may need upgrading as part of the work - ideally by someone confident with soldering and polarity checks.
JST and small-model connectors
Small JST-style connectors are found on compact RC cars, micro models, receivers and low-current accessories. They are not interchangeable just because they look similar. JST is a family name covering several connector types, so pitch, housing shape and polarity must all match.
On small-scale models, battery dimensions can be as limiting as the plug. Measure the battery bay and check the wire exit position before ordering. A pack that fits electrically but prevents the body shell from seating properly is not the right pack.
Do not confuse the main plug with the balance plug
A LiPo battery usually has two separate connections. The thick main leads deliver power to the ESC. The smaller balance lead allows a suitable charger to monitor and balance individual cells during charging.
A 2S LiPo normally has a three-wire balance plug, a 3S pack has four wires, and so on. That plug does not power the model and should never be forced into a vehicle’s main battery lead. Most hardcase car LiPos use a JST-XH balance connector, but confirm this before choosing a charge lead or balance-board arrangement.
When choosing a charger, you need compatibility with both sides of the battery: the correct main charge lead and the correct balance connection. Never charge a LiPo through an improvised lead without proper cell balancing where balancing is required.
Check more than connector type before ordering
Once you know the plug, verify the battery specification against the vehicle manual or the original pack. The connector answers the fitting question, but it cannot make an unsuitable battery safe.
First, match the voltage. A model rated for 2S LiPo must not be given a 3S pack unless the manufacturer confirms the ESC, motor and drivetrain can handle it. Likewise, a 6S model may use two matching 3S packs in series or one 6S pack depending on its wiring and battery tray layout. More voltage means more speed and stress, not a free performance upgrade.
Next, check capacity and size. Higher mAh usually gives longer run time, but it also adds weight and can make a hardcase pack too long, tall or wide for the tray. For crawling, a little extra weight can sometimes help traction if it is positioned low. For racing and jumping, a lighter pack may give a more responsive feel.
Finally, consider discharge capability. A battery with an inadequate continuous discharge rating can sag under load, run hot and deliver disappointing punch. A high-C label alone is not a guarantee of quality, but a reputable pack with a realistic rating and a connector appropriate for the vehicle is a much better starting point than buying on capacity alone.
Are battery connector adaptors safe to use?
An adaptor is useful when you own several models with different plugs, want to use an existing battery temporarily, or need to connect a battery to a charger lead. Used sensibly, a well-made adaptor can save replacing perfectly serviceable equipment.
For a high-current RC vehicle, though, an adaptor is a compromise. It adds another pair of contacts, another soldered joint and more resistance. That extra resistance can create heat, especially in 4S and 6S bashers, heavy crawlers or vehicles geared for speed. A poor-quality adaptor with thin wire or loose terminals is not worth the risk.
Use adaptors only where their wire gauge, connector rating and build quality suit the application. Keep them short, inspect them for heat damage, and never stack multiple adaptors together. If you regularly run the same battery and vehicle combination, changing one connector properly is normally the neater long-term solution. Any soldering work must preserve correct polarity - reversing positive and negative can destroy an ESC almost instantly.
A quick buying check before you add a battery to the basket
Before ordering, compare the battery listing with your model on these five points:
- Main connector type on the vehicle’s ESC lead
- LiPo cell count or NiMH voltage approved for the model
- Battery tray length, width and height
- Required discharge capability for the motor and ESC setup
- Charger lead and balance connection compatibility

That makes it far easier to identify the correct replacement than guessing from a connector name.
