Overview
The FTX Outlaw 1/10 Brushless 4WD Ultra-4 RTR Buggy is a ready-to-run RC buggy that brings authentic desert racing thrills to your local park or backyard. Loosely based on the powerful Ultra-4 buggies that tackle the challenging terrain of the US west coast deserts, the Outlaw combines genuine off-road performance with impressive scale realism in a package that's perfect for both newcomers discovering the hobby and experienced enthusiasts seeking value-for-money fun. This isn't just another entry-level ready to run RC car UK enthusiasts overlook—it's a comprehensively equipped 4WD brushless buggy that delivers serious capability straight out of the box.
What sets the FTX Outlaw apart from other ready-to-run RC buggies is its distinctive design philosophy. The semi-scale tubular roll cage, pre-painted body panels and detailed internal driver cockpit give it genuine character and visual appeal. Yet beneath this attractive exterior lies genuine engineering that matters: a fully sealed transmission, adjustable suspension with multi-position mounting points, and a moulded tub chassis designed to handle serious bashing. Whether you're running this on grass, dirt, gravel or mixed terrain, the Outlaw's trailing arm rear suspension with long-travel capability provides the articulation needed to conquer rough ground with confidence.
FTX has equipped the Outlaw with quality components throughout. The brushless drivetrain features an Etronix 2950kv 4-pole motor paired with a waterproof 60Amp Photon 2.1W speed controller, ensuring responsive acceleration and reliable power delivery. The included Voltz 3250mAh 7.4v 20C LiPo battery provides ample runtime for extended play sessions, whilst the Etronix 2.4GHz radio system keeps you in full control. This is a ready-to-run RC buggy that's genuinely ready to run, coming 99% assembled with minimal preparation needed.
Key Features
- Brushless Motor System — The Etronix 2950kv 4-pole brushless motor delivers smooth, efficient power with minimal maintenance compared to brushed alternatives, making this one of the most user-friendly brushless RC buggies for those new to the technology.
- Waterproof Electronics — Both the 60Amp ESC and steering servo are waterproof-rated, allowing you to drive through water crossings and muddy terrain without immediate concern for electrical failure, greatly extending where you can take this buggy.
- Trailing Arm Rear Suspension — This long-travel suspension configuration with huge articulation mimics what full-size Ultra-4 buggies use in desert racing, allowing the rear axle to move independently and absorb massive bumps whilst maintaining traction.
- 4WD Shaft Drive System — All four wheels receive power through a sealed, centrally-positioned shaft drivetrain with a telescopic sliding driveshaft to the rear axle, ensuring even weight distribution and reliable power delivery across all terrain types.
- Fully Adjustable Suspension — Multi-position shock absorber mounting points and adjustable turnbuckles allow you to fine-tune droop, camber, toe-in and wheelbase, giving you genuine control over handling characteristics as you become more experienced.
- Aluminium Oil-Filled Shock Absorbers — Blue anodised big-bore shocks with adjustable settings absorb impacts effectively and look genuinely scale-realistic, whilst the oil filling prevents fluid loss during extended play sessions.
- Heavy-Duty Metal Geared Differential — Front and rear differentials use metal crown and pinion gears for durability, preventing the gear stripping that can occur with plastic alternatives during aggressive acceleration.
- Semi-Scale Tubular Roll Cage — A genuine protective roll cage with spare wheel and tyre mounting isn't just for show—it protects the cockpit area during rollovers and adds authentic desert racer aesthetics.
- Universal Front Driveshafts — These allow articulation at the front axle without binding, crucial for the suspension travel this buggy is capable of delivering.
- 2.4GHz Digital Radio System — The Etronix Sport 2.4GHz radio offers interference-free operation with full servo control, meaning smooth steering response and reliable throttle management even in areas with other RC users.
- Receiver Box Protection — The receiver is housed in a dedicated protected box within the moulded chassis, keeping radio electronics safe from impacts and the elements.
- Super-Soft Compound Tyres — The all-terrain tyres with 135mm diameter and 55mm width use a softer rubber compound that bites into loose soil and mud, dramatically improving traction on challenging surfaces.
- Lightweight High-Impact Arms — Suspension and control arms use durable plastic that absorbs shock without breaking, ideal for the inevitable impacts that come with learning to drive RC buggies.
- LiPo Battery Compatibility — Whilst the included 7.4v LiPo battery is supplied, the chassis accepts both NiMh and LiPo batteries, allowing upgrade flexibility as your interests develop.
- 99% Ready-to-Run Assembly — This is a genuine ready-to-run RC buggy requiring only 8 AA batteries for the transmitter and basic setup, getting you driving within minutes of opening the box.
- Comprehensive Included Accessories — You receive a LiPo charge sack for safe battery storage and an Etronix PowerPal Pocket Balance Charger, eliminating the need to purchase additional charging equipment immediately.
- Extensive Upgrade Parts Availability — The wide range of FTX Outlaw option parts means you can progressively upgrade components—from aluminium chassis plates to steel driveshafts—allowing the buggy to grow with your skills and budget.
Technical Performance
The FTX Outlaw 1/10 brushless buggy delivers impressive performance through carefully engineered mechanical and electrical systems. The Etronix 2950kv brushless motor is specifically chosen for its torque characteristics and efficiency at the 7.4v supply voltage provided by the Voltz 3250mAh LiPo battery. The waterproof 60Amp ESC (electronic speed controller) provides the switching precision necessary for smooth throttle response whilst its current rating ensures it can handle the peak current draw from this motor configuration without thermal issues. The 11.2:1 gear ratio balances acceleration and top speed appropriately for the 1/10 scale class, providing sufficient torque to climb slopes and obstacles whilst maintaining usable velocity across open terrain. Construction throughout emphasises durability: the moulded tub chassis provides a rigid base whilst the sealed transmission keeps dirt and moisture away from critical drivetrain components. The front suspension uses the proven design from FTX's Carnage and Bugsta models, incorporating universal driveshafts that flex with suspension travel, whilst the semi-scale trailing arm rear suspension offers dramatically longer travel than traditional rigid axle designs. Shock absorbers are full-length aluminium bodies filled with damping oil, mounted at multiple positions to allow ride height and handling adjustments. The metal geared differentials at both ends prevent the catastrophic gear failure that can occur in plastic alternatives when you're accelerating hard across uneven ground. Overall dimensions of 505mm length, 320mm width and 240mm height with a 328mm wheelbase create a balanced platform that's compact enough for smaller spaces yet large enough to genuinely absorb terrain rather than bounce across it. This is a properly engineered ready-to-run RC buggy, not a toy, and that engineering shows in every aspect of how it performs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX Outlaw suitable for RC beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The Outlaw is specifically designed as an entry-level ready-to-run buggy that comes 99% assembled. It requires only transmitter batteries to begin driving, and the Etronix components are reliable and forgiving of beginner mistakes. However, the complexity of 4WD suspension adjustment means you'll have plenty to learn about tuning as you progress, so the buggy grows with your skills rather than limiting you to basic operation.
- What battery does the FTX Outlaw need? — The buggy is supplied with a Voltz 3250mAh 7.4v 20C LiPo battery that clips into the hard-cased battery holder. The chassis accepts both NiMh and LiPo batteries, so if you want extended runtime or improved performance, you can upgrade to higher-capacity LiPo batteries whilst keeping the existing charger and charging infrastructure compatible.
- What's the difference between the FTX Outlaw and the Carnage/Bugsta models? — The Carnage and Bugsta trucks use front suspension designs similar to the Outlaw's front end, but the Outlaw's key differentiator is its semi-scale trailing arm rear suspension with long-travel capability. This rear suspension configuration is what allows the Outlaw to handle severe terrain with the articulation of a true desert buggy, whereas the Carnage and Bugsta use more conventional rear axle designs suited to different driving styles.
- How long does the battery run for on a single charge? — Runtime depends on driving style and terrain, but expect 20-30 minutes of mixed driving from the supplied Voltz 3250mAh battery. Aggressive full-throttle running will reduce this, whilst more conservative driving will extend it. Having a second battery charged and ready allows continuous play sessions.
- Can the FTX Outlaw handle water? — The electronics are water-resistant, not fully waterproof, meaning the buggy can handle water crossings and wet grass without immediate failure. However, submerging the electronics is not recommended, and you should allow the buggy to dry before storing. The sealed transmission protects the drivetrain well, but salt water is particularly corrosive and should be avoided.
- What makes the Outlaw's suspension special? — The trailing arm rear suspension provides huge articulation—the suspension travels dramatically compared to conventional designs—allowing the buggy to maintain wheel contact on rocky or heavily broken terrain. The long-travel aluminium shock absorbers with adjustable mounting points mean you can genuinely tune how the buggy handles, from soft and compliant for rough ground to firm for tighter cornering.
- Is this a good RC buggy for UK terrain? — Excellent. The super-soft compound tyres and long-travel suspension excel in British conditions—muddy fields, overgrown grass, uneven ground and wet terrain are exactly what this buggy is designed for. The water-resistant electronics handle damp conditions well, and the articulation means it traverses broken ground that would ground out conventional RC cars.
- What spares and upgrades are available? — FTX offers an extensive parts catalogue for the Outlaw. Common upgrades include aluminium chassis plates and arm holders, steel driveshafts, upgraded shock bodies, additional body colours, and replacement tyres in different compounds. The manufacturer's parts availability means you can progressively upgrade the buggy or keep it running with cheap plastic replacement parts.
- How fast is the FTX Outlaw? — The 11.2:1 gear ratio and 2950kv motor combination provides good acceleration and usable top speed for a 1/10 buggy, though exact speed depends on terrain, battery condition and setup. Expect 25-30mph in favourable conditions on hard ground, though the buggy excels at terrain ability rather than outright speed.
- Can I use faster LiPo batteries? — The 60Amp ESC is rated to handle higher voltage configurations. A 3S (11.1v) LiPo battery would provide significantly more power and speed, but you must ensure your ESC can handle it (this one can) and that your motor and servo can tolerate the increased voltage. Always check compatibility before upgrading.
