Overview

The FTX Kanyon 4x4 RTR 1:10 XL Trail Crawler represents exceptional value in the ready to run RC car market, offering UK hobbyists a genuinely impressive trail machine that punches well above its price point. This XL-sized 1:10 scale electric RC crawler is purpose-built for serious terrain negotiation, featuring a blend of semi-scale aesthetics with genuine off-road capability that makes it equally at home on rocky moorland, woodland trails, or challenging backyard terrain. Whether you're discovering the world of RC crawling for the first time or you're an experienced basher looking for a capable backup rig, the Kanyon delivers outstanding performance without requiring extensive modification or expensive upgrades.

What sets the FTX Kanyon apart from typical budget crawlers is its engineering philosophy: FTX have equipped this machine with components usually reserved for more expensive models, including oil-filled adjustable shock absorbers, metal transmission gears, locked axles front and rear, and a surprisingly capable 9kg steering servo. The result is a trail-ready RC vehicle that can genuinely climb steep inclines, negotiate deep water, tackle dense undergrowth, and maintain articulation over rocky terrain where lesser machines would struggle. For buyers seeking an affordable entry point into RC rock crawling or supplementary vehicle to their existing collection, the Kanyon is genuinely difficult to beat.

Available now at RC Model Shop, this is an authentic ready to run setup that includes everything except the 8 AA batteries needed for the transmitter. Assembled from the factory and factory-tested, you can unbox, charge the battery, add those eight AA cells to the remote, and be exploring your local trails within hours rather than spending weeks on assembly and calibration.

Key Features

  • XL 1:10 Scale with Over 10% Size Advantage — This crawler is genuinely bigger than standard 1:10 trail machines, measuring 580mm long, 320mm wide and 305mm tall (bumper to bumper), providing noticeably better ground clearance, improved approach angles, and a more impressive scale presence on the trail. The larger footprint translates directly into superior obstacle-clearing capability.
  • 99% Ready-To-Run Format — Unlike race kits requiring extensive assembly, the Kanyon arrives fully assembled and factory-tested, with only the addition of 8 AA batteries (for the transmitter) needed before you're ready for action. This dramatically reduces setup time for newcomers and allows immediate enjoyment of the vehicle.
  • 60T High-Torque Brushed Motor — Paired with a waterproof ESC, this motor delivers the controllable, manageable power essential for technical crawling rather than raw speed. The emphasis on torque over velocity means steep climbs and technical obstacles are handled with composure and control.
  • Multi-Link Suspension with Adjustable Oil-Filled Shocks — Four adjustable oil-filled shock absorbers across all corners provide excellent articulation and keep tyres in contact with irregular terrain. The multi-link setup allows massive axle droop whilst maintaining chassis stability, crucial for navigating rocks, roots and uneven ground.
  • Front and Rear Locked Axles — All four wheels receive constant power through locked differentials, ensuring relentless forward momentum even when individual wheels lose contact with the ground. Combined with the limited slip capability, this makes the Kanyon surprisingly capable at ascending steep inclines.
  • Telescopic Sliding Centre Driveshafts — The innovative centre driveshaft design allows vertical chassis movement independent of drivetrain articulation, providing genuine low-speed crawling capability without binding or binding-up that would stall lesser machines.
  • Front CVA Steering Universal Driveshafts — Constant-velocity steering universals maintain consistent power delivery to the front wheels throughout the full steering range, preventing the dead spots that affect simpler designs and enabling smooth, predictable low-speed steering inputs.
  • Compact 3-Gear Centre Transmission — The space-efficient transmission keeps overall dimensions manageable whilst the gear arrangement provides reliability and simplicity, with metal output, crown and diff gears throughout for durability.
  • Etronix EX2 Sport 2.4GHz Digital Radio System — Operating on the crowded 2.4GHz frequency band with digital processing, this radio system offers excellent range and immunity from interference. The included receiver box integrates seamlessly with the crawler's electronics.
  • Etronix 9Kg Waterproof Steering Servo — Rated at 9kg of torque (though source 2 references 10.5kg capability), this waterproof servo delivers the control authority necessary for technical terrain navigation and withstands splash and spray from creek crossings and wet conditions. Higher-specification servos can be substituted if desired.
  • Waterproof Brushed Crawler ESC — The waterproof electronic speed controller is splash-proof, meaning the Kanyon can be driven through shallow water features and muddy terrain without immediate electronic failure, though submersion should be avoided.
  • 1800mAh NiMH 7.2v Battery with Wall Charger — The included Voltz branded NiMH stick battery provides adequate runtime for recreational crawling sessions (typically 40 minutes to over an hour depending on terrain), and the basic wall charger is suitable for home charging. Enthusiasts often invest in higher-capacity batteries or LiPo alternatives for extended runtime.
  • 13 Factory-Fitted LED Lamps — Head, tail and spotlight LEDs mounted throughout the bodyshell provide realistic scale illumination whilst offering practical functionality for driving after dark. The lighting system is powered from the main battery circuit and adds genuine appeal to night-time operations.
  • Semi-Scale Off-Road Bodyshell with Integrated Accessories — The clear or painted bodyshell features moulded wheel arches, luggage roof rack, functional roll cage, front grill detail, bumper elements and comprehensive moulded fender protection. This isn't a crude basic shell but a genuinely detailed component that conveys proper off-road expedition aesthetics.
  • Aluminium Front and Rear Bumper Mounts — Rather than plastic mounts, FTX have engineered proper aluminium mounting provisions for both front and rear bumpers, providing multiple positioning options and strengthening these structural elements against impact loads and trail abuse.
  • Supersoft Aggressive Lug Pattern Tyres on Scale Wheels — The included tyres feature pronounced lugs for genuine off-road traction, mounted to properly-proportioned scale-style wheels that complement the bodyshell aesthetic whilst maintaining practical trail grip across rock, soil and loose surfaces.
  • Extensive Hop-Up and Spare Parts Availability — FTX have engineered the Kanyon within their modular platform strategy, meaning comprehensive aluminium upgrade options, replacement wear items, and performance enhancements are readily available and affordable, allowing progressive improvement and customisation as your skills develop.

Technical Performance

The FTX Kanyon achieves its remarkable capability through thoughtful engineering rather than raw power or expensive components. The 60T brushed motor, paired with the waterproof crawler ESC, delivers the kind of controllable, low-speed torque that actual rock crawling demands. Unlike speed-focused buggies or high-powered basher trucks that are essentially useless at genuine technical obstacle negotiation, the Kanyon's motor selection emphasises creep speed and graduated throttle response. The all-metal transmission gearing (output, crown and differential gears) provides durability beyond what cheaper plastic alternatives offer, critical for machines that will spend hours climbing rocks and negotiating roots rather than milliseconds on smooth track. The 1800mAh NiMH 7.2v battery provides respectable runtime—customers report 40 minutes on gentle terrain and 25 minutes on sustained steep inclines—though many upgraders opt for higher-capacity alternatives or LiPo batteries for extended sessions.

The multi-link suspension geometry represents significant engineering sophistication. Rather than simple solid axles, each corner uses independent link arms that control axle geometry as the suspension cycles through full travel. The oil-filled shock absorbers aren't merely decorative; they provide both damping characteristics and ride height consistency that cheap coil-over springs cannot match. The telescopic sliding centre driveshaft is particularly clever: as the chassis articulates over obstacles, the driveshaft can extend and compress independently, allowing the chassis to rise above the drivetrain geometry rather than being constrained by fixed-length shafts. This engineering detail is why the Kanyon climbs vertical rock faces that would stop other 1:10 crawlers. The locked front and rear axles mean all four wheels are constantly powered, whilst the centre differential provides manageable turning characteristics without the complication and expense of electro-hydraulic locking differentials.

Build quality throughout is noticeably superior to typical budget machines. The aluminium bumper mounts reinforce areas that plastic mounts would struggle with after months of trail impacts. The metal gears throughout the transmission won't shatter under prolonged hard use like cheaper plastic alternatives. The Etronix servo is genuinely waterproof and capable of holding firm steering input whilst crawling at sub-inch-per-minute speeds. The waterproof ESC allows shallow water operation and muddy terrain exploration that would immediately destroy unprotected electronics. Dimensions are 580mm length, 320mm width and 305mm height (bumper to bumper), with a wheelbase of 340mm, making this genuinely substantial when placed alongside typical plastic-heavy crawlers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the FTX Kanyon suitable for beginners and first-time RC crawling enthusiasts? — Yes, absolutely. The RTR format means no assembly is required, the speed is manageable and forgiving for learners, and the comprehensive spare parts ecosystem means you can afford to damage and repair components whilst developing skills. Customer feedback consistently praises the Kanyon as an excellent first crawler, with the caveat that it's slower than speed-focused vehicles—but that slowness is precisely what makes it ideal for technical terrain learning.
  • What is the runtime I should expect from the included 1800mAh battery? — On gentle rolling terrain and flat ground, expect 45 minutes to an hour of continuous operation. On steep inclines and technical crawling where the motor works harder, runtime reduces to approximately 25-30 minutes. Many users upgrade to higher-capacity batteries (3000-5000mAh) for extended sessions, with proportional increase in overall runtime.
  • Can the FTX Kanyon handle water features and muddy terrain? — Yes, the waterproof ESC and waterproof servo allow shallow water crossings and muddy terrain exploration. The vehicle can be driven through shallow streams and wet conditions without immediate electronics failure. However, full submersion should be avoided, and electronics should be inspected and dried after wet operations.
  • How does the Kanyon compare to other 1:10 scale crawlers in this price range? — The Kanyon's primary advantages are its larger XL size (over 10% bigger than standard 1:10), the inclusion of oil-filled adjustable shocks rather than basic springs, locked axles front and rear, telescopic centre driveshafts that genuinely improve articulation, and metal gearing throughout. Most competitors at this price point use plastic gears, simpler suspensions, and smaller chassis dimensions. Customer comparisons with vehicles costing considerably more report favourably on the Kanyon's climbing ability and terrain capability.
  • Is this better value than the RTR alternative models like the FTX Outback 2.0? — Both are excellent crawlers. The Kanyon emphasises serious technical obstacle negotiation with its locked axles and articulation-focused geometry. The Outback 2.0 emphasises slightly higher speed and more diverse terrain. For pure crawling ability, the Kanyon's design is optimised for slow technical exploration; for mixed on-road/trail use, compare both options. The 10% size advantage of the Kanyon XL format is a genuine benefit for difficult terrain.
  • What batteries are compatible with the Kanyon, and should I upgrade from the included NiMH pack? — The Kanyon uses 7.2v battery packs. The included 1800mAh NiMH is adequate for recreational use. Popular upgrades include: Enrich Power 3000mAh or 5000mAh NiMH packs for extended runtime with similar charge characteristics; or quality LiPo batteries with appropriate balance chargers for significantly improved power delivery and runtime (though LiPo requires more careful handling and storage).
  • Do I need to buy the Power Bundles recommended at checkout, or is the basic kit sufficient? — The basic kit is completely functional with only 8 AA batteries added to the transmitter. Power Bundles include upgraded battery options and faster chargers, which enhance the experience (more runtime, quicker charging between sessions) but are not essential. Many users operate the basic kit for months before choosing to upgrade batteries.
  • Can I upgrade components on the Kanyon, and are parts readily available? — Yes, FTX publish extensive hop-up options for the Kanyon, including aluminium chassis braces, upgraded bumper mounts, aluminium suspension components, alternative servos, and numerous wear items. The platform is well-supported with affordable spare parts and upgrade options, allowing progressive improvement as your skills develop or budget allows.
  • What is the maximum speed of the FTX Kanyon? — The Kanyon is optimised for slow technical crawling rather than speed. Maximum velocity is modest (estimated around 10-15 mph depending on battery and terrain), which some describe as a limitation but which is precisely the design philosophy required for genuine rock crawling where maintaining control and tyre grip at sub-inch-per-minute creep speeds matters far more than top speed capability.
  • Does the Kanyon require any assembly or pre-setup before first use? — The chassis is fully assembled and factory-tested. Before first use, you simply need to charge the included battery, install 8 AA batteries in the transmitter, bind the radio receiver to the transmitter (normally a simple 5-minute process following included instructions), and you're ready to drive. No tools or mechanical knowledge required.
